It’s just a cold. But my nose is red and sore and my throat is scratchy from coughing. Any tips gratefully received.

Get some tissues with balsalm on, they’re softer to your nose.

Paracetamol/lemsip every few hours, and maybe also ibuprofen if feel particularly rough.

Strepsils to ease throat.

Plenty of rest, plus early night.

Sparklesocks · 30/12/2019 17:16

Yes proper tissues over toilet paper definitely. Wearing warm scarves and clothes and blankets. Sleep is the only thing that really helps me, apart from waiting it out.

Fleetheart · 30/12/2019 17:17

Drink a nice glass of red wine. Honestly it helps

Also eat apples and get to bed early

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/12/2019 17:19

Nice tissues
Vaseline for your nose
Hot drinks
Day nurse
Night nurse
Early nights

OvenGlovesWillTearUsApart · 30/12/2019 17:19

What I normally do/get/use:

Kleenex ultra soft tissues
Vitamin C
Zinc
Manuka honey
Lemon juice and ginger in hot water
Chicken broth
Avoid dairy
Strong throat spray (pharmacy)
Cold & Flu “Max” capsules
Sleep/rest as much as possible
Loads of herbal tea
Sugar-free cough syrup

Feel better soon!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/12/2019 17:20

Strepsils too for your throat!

Getitwright · 30/12/2019 17:20

You can get easy to use medication that lowers the temperature, deals with the pain of a sore throat, and may or may not have a decongestant included. Hot Lemon or Blackcurrant Cold remedies from Boots, own brand are cheapest, just as good as Beechams, but actually lower in salt.
Mentholated sweets will help clear nose. Gargle with salt water to help with throat infection. (Don’t whatever you do swallow it!) Don’t over blow your nose, use a bit of Vaseline to stop your nose getting sore, but throw this away once you have got better to stop spreading infection. Keep away from others if possible, bin tissues after use, wash your hands frequently. If you can, extra rest in warm bed is great.
Just coming out the other side of a cold, it all worked ok for me.

nonevernotever · 30/12/2019 17:25

Pure Vitamin e oil to put on the sore skin - soothing and doesn't sting at all. ACE boiled sweets (in a tin) from lidl are nice for sore throats and coughs. I also like ice lollies and smoothies made with a banana, freshly squeezed lemon juice, grated fresh ginger and whatever fruit juice I have to hand(or water) to stop it being too solid. Once I'm past the worst I like cheesy mash with a crunchy salad for dinner, but that might just be because that's what dm gave us when we were little...

Mintjulia · 30/12/2019 17:31

Tissues with balsam for sore nose, lemon & honey ( with whisky) for sore throat. Paracetamol or nurofen for the head ache. Lots of fluids and sleep.
And vicks on my pillowcase for bunged up airways.

Seeline · 30/12/2019 17:33

Vick
Olbus oil
Lots of very hot tea

LittleSweet · 30/12/2019 17:33

Wine and carb rich food. I also need more sympathy than it deserves.

purplecorkheart · 30/12/2019 17:36

I really got hit with a cold this year and normally they did do not bother me very much but this flatten me.

Get as much sleep as you can. Have both heavy quilt and a light blanket on the bed. I used to get very hot and cold. Honestly I sleep most of christmas.

Soft tissue,

Vasaline on your nose, a good lipbalm and moisturiser for your face.

Paracetamol or Iveco (not sure if you can get that in uk).

Plenty hot drinks.

There is a very good spray you can get over the counter for a sore throat.

Once you are over your cold/sore throat replace your toothbrush of you can.

BlindAssassin1 · 30/12/2019 17:37

Night Nurse to knock you out so at least you sleep for a few hours.

Keeping ears and neck warm with scarves.

Avoiding dairy to keep the snots at bay.

Keeping away from other people - stops spreading the germs and because my patience is thin when I get a crappy cold.

Heismyopendoor · 30/12/2019 17:38

Lots of fluids, rest and Morrison’s cold and flu tablets. They are the bees knees.

steff13 · 30/12/2019 17:39

Aquafor is amazing for your sore nose, if you all can get it - it heals mine within hours when it's sore from blowing.

Other than that, hot water with honey and lemon and lots of rest.

Newenw · 30/12/2019 17:40

Thanks everyone, a few things I hadn’t thought of there, especially replacing my toothbrush afterwards! Will have to send DH for softer tissues and other supplies.

Cut the sugar out.

Lots of water.

Balsam tissues.

Fruit sweets, the boiled type. Good for soothing the throat inbetween any of the medic type.

Wring out a cold wet flannel - great for forehead and top of head.

SoleBizzz · 30/12/2019 17:40

Do as little as possible and take some medications. Use take aways.

beargrass · 30/12/2019 17:41

Vicks
Olbas oil
Calpol plug-in at night (work best in a small bedroom)
Rest and paracetamol
And... www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2011/mar/13/nigel-slater-classic-hot-toddy-recipe

catlady3 · 30/12/2019 17:43

Nasal flush with a neti pod thing is really good!

Tombliwho · 30/12/2019 17:44

Water. Loads of it.
I always feel like I'm suffering less and recover quicker if I drown a cold.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 30/12/2019 17:45

I'm hopefully coming to the end of a horrible throat and chest bug. I have never had such a painful throat ever. I've been having lemsip with extra honey and sipping cold water the whole time. I've got nurofen plus but you can only take that for 3 days and today will be the last day. I am lucky (kind of) that I am off all of Christmas, DC are old enough to entertain themselves and DH is also off, so I have been in bed for most of the time since Boxing Day. I've also had a cold sore so Compeed has helped with that and the Lucas Pawpaw ointment is good for dry lips or nose. I've had a hot water bottle in bed with me for most of the time and tried to get as much sleep as possible. It is the illest I have felt since I had glandular fever age 11 and it looks like I'm in for a few more days of it yet.

Of course I'm also feeling massively sorry for myself as I have missed out on all the walks, lunches and days out that we had planned for this week.

ohprettybaby · 30/12/2019 17:47

Once you are over your cold/sore throat replace your toothbrush of you can.
Why? Can you actually re-infect yourself with the same virus?

easyandy101 · 30/12/2019 17:47

Dressing gown of death and a slow shuffle

sall74 · 30/12/2019 17:48

I don't know how people do cope and function and carry on doing non-essential things when they have colds... every time I get a cold it literally floors me, to the point where I have to go up the stairs virtually on my hands and knees and stop for a rest half way up.
