It’s just a cold. But my nose is red and sore and my throat is scratchy from coughing. Any tips gratefully received.

@ThisIsNotARealAvo I think I have the same. My throat is like razors but I've started coughing and coughing today. Voice has completely gone as well

Villagegreenpreservation · 30/12/2019 17:52

Ice water here too. And also Bepanthen for my nose and I second the Night nurse to knock you out and sleep

CarolinaPink · 30/12/2019 17:52

Lots of fluids. Honey, lemon and whisky several times daily. Staple the box of tissues to your side, and a bag for disposal of once-used tissues to the other side.

Fr0g · 30/12/2019 17:56

hot lemon with honey and ginger
nasal spray
soft tissues
paracetamol
gargle with diluted hydrogen peroxide
nytol (anti histamine, not herbal version) for sleep
duvet & heatpad

haagen dazs

Hope you feel better soon. I've had lurgy for days and v fed up. I've decided lemsip makes me feel more like an invalid, so now for this cold I am taking some all in one tablets.

Happinose is better than vaseline for sore overblown nose. Hot water bottle, rest, orange juice, lazy snacks.

My youngest has made me a cuppa and banished me to bed which is just perfect tbh. Never been so proud or glad I had children!

Hefzi · 30/12/2019 18:09

I am envious of you folk who can sleep when you have a cold - first night, post-nasal drip keeps you up all night. Second to tenth night that irritating nose-running-whilst-asleep disturbs you every 20 minutes - if you plug your nostrils to minimise this, it's waking up at a similar interval because your hanky is covering your (open) mouth and is either being inhaled or threatening to smother you.

I used to get colds that were shit for 36 hours, but then the gunk thickened up, could be blown or coughed up, and it gots out of my sinuses and onto my chest. Since November, I have had four different colds, all of which have done that fucking irritating really-runny-but-really-thin crap so the really unwell thing I used to get for less than two days is extended to two weeks at least, owing to sleep deprivation. I hate colds Angry

I have had lots of very nasty tropical diseases over the years, and I find it totally unacceptable that a cold is so minor (for an otherwise healthy adult) but makes you feel so, so unwell, totally out of proportion with the symptoms or the objective severity (in the aforementioned otherwise healthy adult!) of the common cold. Where do I lodge a complaint AngryGrin?!

completelylostit · 30/12/2019 18:12

A nice whisky to kill the bugs in your throat, you can't beat a hot toddy.

Spitsandspots · 30/12/2019 18:12

Bepanthen nappy cream. I buy a tube especially for colds (have teen no baby) every single time you blow your nose, slather some on. It saves that red, sore nose.
Vicks vapour rub on the chest -it really does work
Also this
vicks.com/en-us/shop-products/sinex/Sinex-Moisturizing-Ultra-Fine-Mist
And halls in the black packet.
For coughs-these, taste disgusting but weirdly work. Tesco/boots have them
www.weldricks.co.uk/products/buttercup-broncho-stop-cough-pastilles-pack-of-10?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=GoogleShop%22&gclid=CjwKCAiA3abwBRBqEiwAKwICAzm2Ea8hfhUTQaQVntgfmsnNSmKQyClBINc-6cja4nKjzvCBNKB1YBoCRMMQAvD_BwE
Then lots of warm drinks and paracetamol.

ViciousJackdaw · 30/12/2019 18:14

Eat the hottest curry or chilli-based dish you can handle. That will soon clear the sinuses. Works for me.

purplecorkheart · 30/12/2019 18:42

Re toothbrush: I was advised this by an ENT consultant and a dentist (not at the same time). I have no idea if it is true or not but they both seem quite insistent about it!!!!

Zaphodsotherhead · 30/12/2019 18:48

I rely on Sudofed nasal spray at night to clear out my nose (I can't sleep with a blocked nose, can't breathe through my mouth in my sleep).

I am also a massive baby when I get a cold, so soft blanket, and a Netflix marathon of something easy to watch and uncomplicated (because it's hard to concentrate when you are snorting like a bullock in a field).

Warm squash is recommended by some, but I hate it.

SabineUndine · 30/12/2019 18:53

Vick's First Defence
Sainsbury's cold powders
Vick's chest rub
Asthma inhalers
Sleep lots
Benylin for tickly coughs

Moominfan · 30/12/2019 18:56

I order a spicy takeaway.

SubordinateThatClause · 30/12/2019 19:01

Blistex round your nostrils. It was recommended to me by a friend and it is the best tip I've ever had.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 30/12/2019 19:11

Triple vitamin C dose for the duration as it speeds up recovery.
Fresh ginger steeped in hot water - drink plenty.
Take separate decongestants then have paracetamol and ibuprofen as you need them and ideally alternate doses.
Chicken noodle soup, lots of it.
Then stay in bed and rest as much as you can if possible.

Popc0rn · 30/12/2019 19:24

Sleep
Rest on sofa with Netflix
Hot squash, lots of it
Hot Toddy - honey, lemon juice, hot water and a bit of whisky if you fancy
Spicy foods, chilli, curry etc
Soup
Hot baths/showers
Steam your face: stick it over a bowl of hot water and a towel over your head
Ibuprofen and paracetamol for aches and pains
Hot water bottle for aches and pains too

lidoshuffle · 30/12/2019 19:54

Mulled wine and vaseline round/up the conk!

YuletideFairy · 30/12/2019 22:05

You need a dressing gown of doom and have to shuffle around in slippers, talk in a croaky voice, cough with your tongue out at regular intervals and look sad. That apparently helps my DH when he has a cold. 🙄

Me? I favour paracetamol, hot drinks and sleep as well as balsam tissues and valentine around my nose.

I hope you feel better soon OP, I had it last week and it wore me down.

Thinkofsomethingoriginal · 30/12/2019 22:15

😂😂 I can relate

Ambrose2 · 30/12/2019 22:19

Lemsip, a big bag of satsumas and an early night. Also some vapour rub and stepsils if needed, tissues and a tub of Vaseline on hand. I cut out milk until it passes, but still eat cheese!

5foot5 · 30/12/2019 22:28

I have had a stinker over Christmas. In fact DH insisted on cooking Christmas Dinner while I rested. First time I can remember I wasn't up at the crack of to put the turkey in the oven.

I am a big fan of Lemsip. Also I found this time it really helped me to have the bedroom window open a bit so I got fresh air, stopped me getting so blocked. Oh and at four in the morning when I couldn't get back to sleep I made a mug of hot milk and honey. That soothed my throat and helped me get back to sleep.

Newenw · 31/12/2019 21:26

Sorry to hear that so many of you are suffering too. I’m feeling a bit more like myself today. Thanks for all the tips.
