AIBU to think less of period dramas that use French braids/plaits?

I’m really keen to see Little Women but on the trailer I saw a girl with French plaits and that’s kind of ruined it for me. I remember French plaits becoming a craze in the 80s (1980s!) but as far as I recall they were a new hairstyle then. To me, French plaits in a drama set during the American Civil War belongs in the same anachronistic dump as Mrs Maisel telling her audience that Dr Spock’s message was “you got this”, or the numerous examples of men keeping their hats on indoors.

I’m happy to be proved wrong, and to be shown that French plaits existed before the 1980s, but Wikipedia is no help.

Plaits have been around since Game of Throne days.

HoHoHoik · 30/12/2019 19:41

I can't do them though tried youtube but my thumbs are fingers and my fingers are thumbsespecially with a mirror

Don't use a mirror, that's the one way to fuck it up for sure because your hands will go in the opposite directions. Put something your hair to make it a bit more manageable/artifically grubby as unwashed hair is much easier to plait. When you're finished you can gently run a hairsprayed comb up the sides to help smooth out any bumpy bits and/or gaps.

Mrs Maisel telling her audience that Dr Spock’s message was “you got this"

Wasn't that the message though?!

HoHoHoik · 30/12/2019 19:43

Dutch braids (invented in 2013 to coincide with the release of Frozen) are easier than French plaits.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 30/12/2019 19:43

Just to be that person, you could buy crimpers as well as curling tongs and straighteners at the time LHOTP was set. They were heated in the fire like the irons were, but weren't particularly different in shape ‐ my ex MIL inherited some from her GM and you could clearly see that's what they were.

I am awaiting the "We have to delete this as OP has some real life concerns" message.
Fingers crossed none of your mates won't see it, OP😂 I am sure you moaned to them about the same thing😂

5* for using smart word though!

Lippy1234 · 30/12/2019 19:44

HoHoHoik I do those on my hair, I call them my Heidi look.

iklboo · 30/12/2019 19:45

It was Mrs March singing Wham Rap that spoiled it for me.

Butchyrestingface · 30/12/2019 19:45

Anyone else ASing this OP in hopes this thread is not a one-off?

Glitterblue · 30/12/2019 19:48

When I had put my DD in French braids one day, my grandma said she used to do that style on my mum when she was little - in the 1940s...

I don't think it helps that Timothée Chalamet looks to be around twelve years old

I didn’t think he looked 12. But certainly pretty enough to play one of the sisters.

MikeUniformMike · 30/12/2019 19:50

That bit with the girls sitting in front of the telly watching Happy Days got me. I didn't remember reading it.

I will be watching as I was named after one of the characters, my Mum adored the books. I wish someone would make a film about the other books in the series though! I loved all of them but Jo’s Boys is my favourite!

Orchidflower1 · 30/12/2019 19:52

@mommybunny please come back. Nobody has been unkind. It’s just a face palm moment. Please pop back.

Squigean · 30/12/2019 20:00

Aunt March twerking at Meg's wedding felt like it might be a bit of an anachronistic dance move I thought.

Obsidian77 · 30/12/2019 20:00

I'm fascinated by the 2% of respondents who think op is NBU.
How? Why?

Squigean · 30/12/2019 20:01

(Sorry for spoiler)

ballsdeep · 30/12/2019 20:03

Did your mother invent perms and banana clips too?

QuestionableMouse · 30/12/2019 20:04

@JamieVardysHavingAParty I learned how to do them on horse tails 😂

Maybe they think.life as we know it started in the 80s too? Beyond that it was all dark ages and bubonic plague? and short hair😉

Pinkette06 · 30/12/2019 20:08

Braids have been around forever! Oh op Grin

Dionysius · 30/12/2019 20:11

Bahahaha!

NearlyOutedMyself · 30/12/2019 20:20

The hairstyle we now call French Plaits/Braids, originated in Africa several millennia ago.

I now want someone to braid my hair for me.

NatashaRomanov · 30/12/2019 20:24
Grin I suspect the OP will not be returning!
