AIBU to think less of period dramas that use French braids/plaits?

I’m really keen to see Little Women but on the trailer I saw a girl with French plaits and that’s kind of ruined it for me. I remember French plaits becoming a craze in the 80s (1980s!) but as far as I recall they were a new hairstyle then. To me, French plaits in a drama set during the American Civil War belongs in the same anachronistic dump as Mrs Maisel telling her audience that Dr Spock’s message was “you got this”, or the numerous examples of men keeping their hats on indoors.

I’m happy to be proved wrong, and to be shown that French plaits existed before the 1980s, but Wikipedia is no help.

I wouldn't advise trying to watch a period drama that was made in the 1970s then OP- every one I've ever watched made it screamingly clear that that was its decade of production.

I could cope with the plaits but the pixie boots and leg warmers ruined it for me Crown Grin

MikeUniformMike · 30/12/2019 18:58

Don't tell me that Laurie wears stonewash levi 501s and has bleached hair.

HoHoHoik · 30/12/2019 18:59

Just like Alcott imagined it...

gottastopeatingchocolate · 30/12/2019 19:07

Forget the hair - what did they do to Laurie??

WonderfulAngel · 30/12/2019 19:08

I dont know anything about French plaits but period dramas on tv are the last place I expect historical accuracy

Newmetoday · 30/12/2019 19:11

wow op. Bet You feel like a right idiot now

Sofast · 30/12/2019 19:13

This is hilarious. Please come back op

GuyFawkesDay · 30/12/2019 19:17

Generally not depends on the make up designer.

Some are more "true" to accuracy than others. Some will use more modern looks like dewy skin etc.

The BBC pride and prejudice is good example of true hair and costume, make up is often slightly taken liberty with.

RumpoleoftheBaileys · 30/12/2019 19:19

This smacks of someone being sent to a forum to post nonsense.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 30/12/2019 19:22

😂

You can't really believe that no one braided until within your lifetime???

CoraPirbright · 30/12/2019 19:23

But where were the deeley-boppers, eh?! That’s what I want to know...

JellyfishandShells · 30/12/2019 19:27

Now picturing Jo with a crimped side ponytail, Meg's hair burnt off with a huge pair of plastic Babyliss straighteners (the ones with the little water reservoir that made the steam), and Laurie sporting a permed mullet

🤣

Squigean · 30/12/2019 19:27

Dunno, @gottastopeatingchocolate, I really don't know. But it was bad. He was so bad, it prevented me really liking the film!

NeverTwerkNaked · 30/12/2019 19:29

Oh this thread just lifted me from a deep depression Grin

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 30/12/2019 19:32

flouncyfanny

I can't do them though tried youtube but my thumbs are fingers and my fingers are thumbsespecially with a mirror

^^

Me neither.

The problem is that French braids are well easy to do as a beginner: on other people. Sad In a family like Jo and co, they could all have done them on each other, and you would naturally get to a point where you could do your own behind your head.

Sadly I don't have a sister to do my hair or to experiment on!

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 30/12/2019 19:32

😂😂😂😂

I’m cringing so hard for you OP!

HoHoHoik · 30/12/2019 19:38

I don't think it helps that Timothée Chalamet looks to be around twelve years old.

or else I've reached an age where all the 20 somethings look 12
