To think we need to increase taxes on flights. If you fly more you pay more.

Just that really. I think something like 70% of all flights are taken by 30% of people.

I think we need to move to a system where the tax increases the more you fly. Something like (per year)

10% tax for the first 1000 miles
20% tax for the next 1000 miles
30% tax for the next 1000 miles
40% tax for the next 1000 miles (etc).

AIBU? Should we tax flights more?

You need to read the daily mail. There's also Trump denying climate change

I really don’t want to read the daily mail. You are probably right. The online comments page is probably pretty eye opening (not in a good way).

Finally, I really don't understand the need for your rude, patronising tone over a perfectly sensible discussion. We may differ over what is possible in a democracy but there is no need to treat people who have a different viewpoint as they are stupid. I am definitely not.

The thing is, if you want to take the moral high ground as a reasonable and intelligent debater, you should avoid making pronouncements like this:

You clearly need it explaining to you

and

It isn't a difficult concept to understand hmm

(Both you, to me, at 17:28 yesterday).

You might find that people take you more seriously.

Incidentally, you are living in cloud cuckoo land if you think that a government will be toppled by people upset at having to pay more for their weekends in Amsterdam. Will they march on the Houses of Parliament en masse, do you think?

Yanbu it's the only way forward!

May have already been said (I really can't read through all 18 pages) but if you increase taxes then the only people who will be able to afford to fly will be the haves, not the have-nots.

I have recently been able to go on holiday quite regularly. I'm not a have but I do work very hard and I choose to spend my money on holidays while I can. My mortgage is paid up and my children have families/houses of their own.

So, personally I think YABU

If some of us won't reduce taking flights, it would be good to reduce meat consumption, buy electric cars, and plant native trees and berry hedges etc so as to help in other ways.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 04/01/2020 16:29

But how do you define a frequent flier? There are isolated communities in Northern Canada that you can only access by “road” in the winter, when the waterlogged ground freezes and they build ice roads. In the summer they can only be accessed by air or boat. The ground is too soft to build roads or railways.
People living in these communities pay extortionate prices for food as it is, because the cost of getting it there is high. Would imposing a tax on those flights be fair?

Something more needs to be done to discourage flying, particularly shorthaul flights. It’s crazy that it’s often cheaper for me to fly to Edinburgh from Devon than it is to get the train. If fact my dm recently had to go to Jersey from Devon and ended up getting a flight from Exeter-Manchester and then Manchester-Jersey as it was cheaper than the ferry.

I’m trying to not fly anywhere from now on. We have a holiday in February that was booked years ago but after that we’ll just Ferry or train to places. It all seems a bit pointless though when stbxh is flying from London- NYC and back every week for work 🙄.

You're living in cloud cuckoo land if you think this government, this Tory government, will jack up tax on flying to appease the few who think it's a must to counteract climate change.

Oh, Moose, this is MN! Everyone lives in a town or city, has plenty of money and family who live nearby, no need to fly when you live in a bubble and simply cannot think outside it to imagine that life is not the same for everyone. Those silly Inuits living out in Yukon, they can 'just move', they don't need bush planes, they can just go back to subsistence and starvation.

There was even one poster on here told off a few weeks ago for going to Australia for her FIL's funeral. Apparently, she had no need to fly and should have stayed at home.

The mind boggles!

I'd like to see more tax on fashion clothing. It makes me seethe when I see fashion trends change so bloody quickly that the sale racks are permanently full and you know that most of it goes straight to landfill :(

Hell of a huge carbon footprint for absolutely no real reason :(

I agree.
