What was your proposal like?

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 29/12/2019 21:27

I'm sat reading romantic claptrap because I love a bit of escapism and the main character just proposed in a really romantic setting with a bespoke ring to the love of his life blah de blah. Cynical, me? Grin

It got me thinking that no one has ever proposed to me. I proposed to my exH because I was stupid and led to believe I couldn't do better than an abusive twat and I'm now divorced and in my 40s, happily single, and accepting of it being unlikely to happen to me.

The Hollywood ideal type proposal is pushed into our psyches from such a young age that I wanted to ask what your proposal was like? Was it like you imagined? Was it romantic? Funny? Original? A disappointment? An anti-climax? Do you wish it had been different or did the importance of the question make everything else insignificant?

I know lots of couples just decide to get married now with no actual proposal but if you did get a proposal I'd love to hear about it.

My dad was very romantic yet I don't know how he proposed so I'll ask my mum tomorrow when I see her. I'd love to know more of their story. My dad died a few years back now and it would be lovely to hear about when they were first together.

I'm a sucker for romantic stories yet don't really believe in romance.

In bed after sex Sad

I don't think I will ever get any romantic proposal as we are still married! Smile

goose1964 · 29/12/2019 22:08

My husband didn't really propose he just asked if I wanted to make the holiday we'd just booked our honeymoon.32 years next August

dcib · 29/12/2019 22:08

Non existent.

mbosnz · 29/12/2019 22:09

A wedding magazine was chucked in the grocery trolley. . .

Rachierach11 · 29/12/2019 22:13

On holiday with our 9 month old in Yosemite. I had no idea it was coming. We went to a beautiful spot to watch the sunset and DH said DS wanted to ask me something - will Mummy please marry Daddy. Then he pulled out the ring and it was perfect.

MaMaMaMySharona · 29/12/2019 22:20

DH and I were in Yosemite doing a big hike up 2 amazing waterfalls. When we got to the bottom of the first one, we went and sat on a big rock to take in the views and have a rest. Whilst I was taking photos, he was getting a ring out of his pocket which he then gave me when I sat down. I was totally shocked but unbelievably happy! He managed to wave down a lovely German man who took the most hideous photo of me that exists in the world (sweaty, teary and wearing a very old T-shirt and cycling shorts), but I treasure it knowing how happy I was.

Married a couple months so far Smile

MaMaMaMySharona · 29/12/2019 22:21

@Rachierach11 haha how funny we post after one another and both got engaged in Yosemite! Most amazing place on Earth

Christmas Day in front of my family 😊

Franticterrapin · 29/12/2019 22:23

It was our 10 year anniversary. He woke me up and showed me a video on his phone. It was him and our dog, lots of little in jokes. She was clever and 'helped' him pick out pens and write a note which he folded up at the end. In real time he then gave me the note, which had 'will you marry me' written on it. I looked up and he was on one knee with a beautiful ring.

He'd made the film a few months before when we found out our dog had cancer. I think it gave him a little push to seize what makes you happy bless him. She died the week after he proposed 😪

Bluebutterfly90 · 29/12/2019 22:24

I'm one of those who didn't get a proposal, because me and DP mutually agreed to it.

He asked me recently if I ever felt like I missed out by him not getting down on one knee. I told him no, I would have felt silly, he would have felt silly - so who would it have been for?
Besides we got to go ring shopping together, which was an experience. Grin

Ginger1982 · 29/12/2019 22:25

Should say, not thud Christmas Day! Been married 5 years.

Newbie1999 · 29/12/2019 22:25

In the bar of a hotel overlooking the harbour in Hong Kong on Christmas Day. HK was our first holiday destination, and this was 4 years later.

Fuckthepainaway · 29/12/2019 22:25

Sitting on the living room floor stroking the dog and drinking mugs of tea. He just looked over and asked me to marry him. No ring. No grand statements.

The wedding was equally casual.

nearlynermal · 29/12/2019 22:27

First time was on one knee in an expensive restaurant (he'd called my dad to ask permission). I said yes. He retracted it the next day when I said could we talk about a prenup.

The second time (same guy) was in a lovely little beach bar. I said yes. He later said he'd been a bit distracted at the time because he was pretty sure the backpacker sitting next to us would have been up for a threesome. Shockingly, it didn't work out.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 29/12/2019 22:31

My DH told all my workmates he was going to propose to me at Christmas (was going to his for Boxing Day). Needless to say, they all told me! Come boxing day no proposal, although his sister handed over a bottle of champagne as my Christmas present rather awkwardly.. We ended up having a heated discussion about it the next day- he said he wanted to get married but hadn't got around to getting a ring/ asking my dad.... I said forget it, but realised we did both want to get married. So I ended up proposing to him on Hogmanay, as it was the only way it was going to be a surprise for either of us!
Been married 17 years now, but still goad him about my lack of proposal! My friends all have lovely romantic moments for theirs, but I figure the marriage is probably more important than the actual proposal (Although still sad I didn't get one!)
That said, been proposed to by other people that I was never going to marry, so have experienced the actual proposal!

QueenofallIsee · 29/12/2019 22:36

He enlisted our friends who gathered us for a group photo opportunity whilst we were all out - warm sunny day, surrounded by our favourite people and as she shouted ‘say cheese’ he dropped to one knee. It was beautiful and was all recorded for posterity. We’ve been married 2 mths now

FreedomfromPE · 29/12/2019 22:40

I once proposed. It was in Milan on valentines day at the duomo. There were 5 little cards through the day with little gifts about our relationship. Then I proposed after dinner. I was rejected Sad a big surprise as only weeks before we were both discussing our plans in the future with each other and what sort of wedding we would have. Funnily enough I never did it again.
I have been proposed to four times (!). I have been married twice. My ex husband I don't remember but he did design a ring. Then there was the THIRD date akward proposal with someone I met online Confused. Just over lunch. Their mothers ring Shock.
Then there's the asked in bed after sex followed by an official ask at a restaurant we love so that would be the tale told to.my children and family.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 29/12/2019 22:47

My DH proposed to me in a car park outside the Big Asda in the city where we now live.

It was where we had our first kiss Grin it was perfect.

NB I am not about that social media, Bali beach, staged photography proposal shit at all. But each to their own!

Youseethethingis · 29/12/2019 22:47

He went down on one knee at the end of a jetty on Lake Windermere after a day hiding from the rain in the pub, making our way through the cocktail list. The ducks went mental Grin
We had already agreed to get married and even spoken about our wedding guest list and potential venues, but he says he wanted to give it the final romantic flourish for man points Smile

Jumpi · 29/12/2019 22:56

I’ve had several proposals. The first was a childhood friend who proposed with a haribo ring when I was 10, I said yes. He moved away and we lost touch.

Next from a very good friend who cooked me dinner and confessed his love to me. I didn’t feel the same, I’m not sure he did either really.

Third was a guy I’d had a few dates with but nothing serious as I was moving abroad for work. He came to the airport and did the whole airport movie thing. I didn’t feel the same way so left.

A couple from boyfriends: one in Paris after a drunken dinner, the other after a Boxing Day swim. No to both.

Final one from childhood friend with Haribo ring after meeting up again 10 years later. We were volunteering abroad and had spent a few intense months together. I enjoy being a loner but the thought of not seeing him every day scared me so I was dreading our final day there. We kayaked through a beautiful national park, went for a hike to a waterfall and he proposed. I said yes again and we’ve been together since.

L238 · 29/12/2019 23:06

On a UK beach sharing a portion of chips and a mini bottle of wine. No kneeling, no ring (he knew I’d want to choose) and we’d already discussed it beforehand and agreed so wasn’t a huge surprise. He did ask my dad’s permission first because they’re old fashioned

ViciousJackdaw · 29/12/2019 23:15

In the corridor of the respiratory medicine department at Hull Royal Infirmary, my now-DH just having been told the mass in his chest was just a wonky rib and not lung cancer.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 29/12/2019 23:22

We were living together in the flat we'd bought, having always said we'd never get married. But suddenly it seemed to me it would be OK, & one Sunday morning as we lay in bed I said, "I was thinking maybe we could get married," & to my amazement he said he'd been thinking the same thing. So we did. And we're still together nearly 35 years later.

Colabottles64 · 29/12/2019 23:27

I was travelling overseas for work and he flew to the same destination a day later unknown to me. I went for dinner with a friend and as I was guided to my seat he met me there! Was such a wonderful, romantic surprise and touched my heart that he had planned it all. Proposed that night, gorgeous ring, married a year later. Happy together still and forever I hope!

PositiveVibez · 29/12/2019 23:34

Well - my husband (now), won a raffle in work and the prize was £1000 holiday vouchers.

I hadn't been going out with him that long, but had met some of his mutual couple friends.

They convinced us to spend the vouchers on the skiing holiday they had planned so we could go with them.

I suggested Tuscany, but was swayed by new friends etc. I loved this guy!

On the way to the airport, they searched his bag and pulled out the engagement ring in front of me.

He didn't know I had seen it, but I had.

The holiday was getting later and later in the day and he hadn't asked me to marry him and I had already discussed it with the other girls on the holiday.

I FUCKING HATED skiing and thought maybe cos I was such a dick about skiing, he'd gone off me.

So one night after aperitifs, I said if you don't ask me to marry you, I know you don't want to. (Bearing in mind it was the 5th day, we had been going out for a few years and I was so ready for settling down).

Apparently, he was waiting to get down on one knee in the snow and ask me.

It didn't snow once when we were there so he waited till the last night.

17 years later, we're still together and I love him so much 😍
