Someone recycled some boxes with £15,000 in it and the tip staff handed it in to the police

My first thought was "Wow, people are nicer than me" I'd have assumed it was drug money Confused🤷‍♀️

Would you?

Smashtastick · 29/12/2019 19:40

Would I what? Keep it? No.

Iwasneveragoddess · 29/12/2019 19:40

Oooh I don’t know here .. tricky.

M0reGinPlease · 29/12/2019 19:43

There was a similar story to this recently, £20,000 found in a safe in a scrap yard. No one claimed it and keener could not be traced so it was returned to scrapyard staff who donated to local children's hospice. Lovely story just before Christmas.

LaurieFairyCake · 29/12/2019 19:43

If an old lady dropped her purse that's a real person and I'd cross a crocodile river to get it back to her

But if I'm working at a tip and find boxes with money in it then yes, I'm handing it out to my colleagues

Thing is though if the money is missing the banks might be looking out for the serial numbers. Or the druglord might come a knocking for it. I think it might be against the law as well. It's not just about how honest you are.

M0reGinPlease · 29/12/2019 19:43

Owner, not keener!

Spied · 29/12/2019 19:44

I'd be looking around for a secret camera filming me.
I don't think I'd dare keep it- although it would definitely cross my mind and if was sure I wouldn't be found out I'd take it.

EssentialHummus · 29/12/2019 19:46

I’d likely keep it, if I’m honest. I can imagine returning it if it was lost by a named person who appeals etc, but otherwise no.

arethereanyleftatall · 29/12/2019 19:47

£15,000!! Of course I'd hand it in!! Omg.

SpeedofaSloth · 29/12/2019 19:48

If you take it to the police and no one claims it, isn't it yours anyway?

I gained a gold bracelet this way some years ago.

AnotherDFSsale · 29/12/2019 19:53

I'd totally keep it

TwoZeroTwoZero · 29/12/2019 19:53

I'd keep it and spend it at food markets, craft fairs and flea markets etc over several weeks and months. I'd break into each tenner one at a time by buying something for a pound. Then I'd keep all the pounds 👍☑

Igotthemheavyboobs · 29/12/2019 19:57

I'd hand it into the police without a second thought. I couldn't live with a) the guilt of it being someone's money who really needed it and had it in cash fot legitimate reasons and b) the fear it was drug money and the owner would come after me for it.

It isn't worth the aggro in my head tbh 🤷‍♀️

Ariadnepersephonecloud · 29/12/2019 19:57

I'd keep it but I wouldn't spend it for months in case anyone reported having accidentally tipped their grandmother's life saving or something... After a year I'd do exactly what @TwoZeroTwoZero said.

M0reGinPlease · 29/12/2019 19:58

I've just seen this story on the news. It was taken to the tip by accident by two people clearing a house after their relative died. They had no idea the money was even in the boxes:

Fraggling · 29/12/2019 19:59

I'd hand it in yes

Wouldn't feel right to keep it at all would weigh on me. Whose was it, will it come back to bite me somehow etc

LoudBatPerson · 29/12/2019 20:00

I have always handed in anything I have found and I would even for a large amount. I like to think lost other people do as well.

My son lost his wallet containing cash, his debit card, Oyster card, keys and marlin pass just before Christmas. Two days later we got a call from the police station to say it had been handed in. Everything was still in the wallet.

Monkeynuts18 · 29/12/2019 20:02

I’d hand it in without a second thought. Not because I’m especially honest, but because the chances of it being the proceeds of crime are way too high (although I know it wasn’t in this case).

WaterSheep · 29/12/2019 20:04

They had no idea the money was even in the boxes

But this makes no sense, why would you take boxes to the tip without even looking inside them.

I understand clearing a house can be tedious and time consuming, but do people really just throw out entire boxes without looking inside? 15K is pretty obvious, it's not like a couple of coins hiding in the bottom of a box. Confused

DamsonDress · 29/12/2019 20:07

I would probably hand it in to the police. Not because I'm particularly virtuous or flush but I'd be so paranoid that it was part of some illicit dealings and the swag would be traced back to me.

I'd be a nervous wreck waiting for the knock on the door. Or brick through the window.

I would however phone the police many many times a day asking if it had been claimed because if unclaimed it would be returned to me. I'd have no qualms spending all of it.

I'd use some for my legal fees on account of my harassing the local station.

Spitsandspots · 29/12/2019 20:15

I found a money bag with notes in it. Someone had dropped it in town and I wouldn’t even pocket that let lone £15000.
It wasn’t claimed from the police station so I did get to keep it anyway.

Nogodsnomasters · 29/12/2019 20:33

If I was a user of the tip and found it, I'd keep it. But if I was an employee of the tip and found it, I would report it and hand it over. There's bound to be cctv and it's not worth losing your job over if your bosses find out you all shared £15,000 between yourselves that had been lost.

It's all circumstantial in my eyes, not black and white, yes or no answer regarding keeping It. For example I found a £20 note inside a book that had been donated to charity so I gave it to the charity shop. However, had I found it inside a library book? I'd have just kept it.

orchidsarebeautiful · 29/12/2019 20:51

My father did this a few years ago. He put a box in recycling with £5,000 in notes in it.

He was very upset a few months later when he realised he'd thrown it out until a few months later. He's always hiding cash. I don't think he's learnt.

nextdecade · 29/12/2019 20:58

I’d be too worried I’d be caught- it’s theft by finding like the people that found a winning lottery ticket and got prosecuted

nowyoulistenheretaeme · 29/12/2019 21:04

I would hand it in.

It wouldn’t occur to rme to keep it.
