To think clearly everyone is more honest than me

Someone recycled some boxes with £15,000 in it and the tip staff handed it in to the police

My first thought was "Wow, people are nicer than me" I'd have assumed it was drug money Confused🤷‍♀️

Would you?

The owners were easily traced here. It was the right thing to do and no doubt there are strict rules about keeping anything.
One would like to think the grateful couple would donate a few Bob towards the tea fund though!

The80sweregreat · 29/12/2019 21:28

I'd have handed it all in.
I am too honest , but I couldn't sleep at night if I didn't do the right thing! I'm not being goady and I actually admire people that wouldn't have done as they obviously can live with their decisions in life. We're all different!

meow1989 · 29/12/2019 21:30

If found the odd tenner on the street id keep it (though I think its technically illegal). Probablynup to £50? Certainly anything over 100 I would hand in. I always correct a cashier if they give me say £10 rather than £5 change too...

BillHadersNewWife · 29/12/2019 21:32

But you don't know that a little old lady didn't lose it OP! You say you'd hand a little old lady her purse back but this money...you'd have no idea who it belonged to!

Pjsandbaileys · 29/12/2019 21:34

My sensible head would say the staff handed it in because they were decent and they would have lost their job if they had been found out I guess £15k Vs 10 years of employment no contest really.

dudsville · 29/12/2019 21:38

I'd keep it.

Unusualsuspicion · 29/12/2019 21:40

I tend to think I'm not that honest compared to the MN paragons of virtue - if I had been undercharged a quid in boots it wouldn't occur to me to fess up let alone post on mn in a tizzy about it. But if I found money - even 50 quid let alone 15k - I'd hand it in to the police without a second thought. It belongs to somebody who lost it and deserves to get it back! Your comment about the little old lady makes no sense because you have no idea how the money ended up in the tip! But then I've lost several expensive scarves in pubs of which there was no sign on my return next day, so I'm guessing an awful lot of people think like you op, sadly. I'm a careless bugger to be sure but it's not nice knowing someone has pocketed something you cared about.

Yetanotherwinter · 29/12/2019 21:49

@LaurieFairyCake so basically you’d be dishonest and keep it. That’s not ok.

QueenieMcQueenson · 29/12/2019 22:11

I wouldn't keep it.
Hand it in, if it's not claimed within a certain amount of time, you get to keep it.
But if it was my money, I would want someone to be honest, so I do the same for others.

TigerOnATrain · 29/12/2019 22:14

@LaurieFairyCake

Absolutely damn right I'd keep it. (If there is no chance of me being found out, the cash being traced, and there was no WAY of finding/tracing the original owner.)

delilahbucket · 29/12/2019 22:21

I am absolutely gobsmacked at how many people would keep £15k of someone else's money!! And here's me thinking that humanity is generally good and honest!

helpneedshoes · 29/12/2019 22:27

No way

LeSquigh · 29/12/2019 22:49

I’m absolutely gobsmacked at how many people would (or say they would) hand it in!! I would keep it every time. I would keep any money I found. If I lost money I wouldn’t expect to get it back and I have no sympathy for anyone, old or otherwise, that was too careless to lose it in the first place.

LOL how naive can one person be? 😆🤣

And don't worry.... you can't be right about everything. Grin

Purpletigers · 29/12/2019 23:17

I’m shocked that they dumped so much of someone’s belongings without even taking the time to look in each box . They don’t deserve it but I agree it should have been handed back to them .
