To think this is unreasonable and this judge knowingly scentenced this man to death

Just read a heartbreaking story in the paper about an 87 year old man, who given a 27 month prison sentence after he killed someone in a car accident. The judge was warned at the time by the man's doctors that this was highly likely to lead to his death; but went ahead and did it anyway. As predicted, he died nine days later. This was not murder, this was not malicious; it was a complete, tragic accident.

By all means ban him from driving if he was a danger, look at tightening the driving regulations around older drivers.

But our obsession with "making people pay," for genuine accidents has led to this utter tragedy .

The poor man must have been terrified. I really think this particular judge/ case needs urgent investigation; and we need a wider look at whether prison is always an appropriate response to car accident s like this.

Sadly I don't expect the judge/ CPS/ solicitors etc. Feel guilty at all.

In fact my old Sgt told me - you prosecute the crime not the person their age has nothing to do with it.

However, it is the judge who decides on the sentence, and they do take into account other factors.

As the judge did in this case....

Can I ask, Hopping, are you in America?

God no. We are sensible enough to have gun control laws. Not from the UK either. But our legal system springs from the UK’s. It’s really not hard to guess.

Bit of a clue in the name? Smile

Yes Grin. Although we do have a hot debate with another country as to the origin of the pav but it’s ours!

Age, pregnancy should not be a literal get out of jail free card

EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/01/2020 15:14

@HoppingPavlova. happy to settle that debate - it was NZ Grin

NumbersStation · 05/01/2020 16:33

Fight! Grin

bettybattenburg · 05/01/2020 16:57

I think all fights with our friends over the Tasman are postponed at the moment out of sympathy for them having to put up with their shit prime minister and the bush fires Sad

But yes, it's not Aussie.

mbosnz · 05/01/2020 16:59

Yup, definitely Kiwi for the Pav. . .

But I'd gladly give you the pav if it would put out these damned hellfires.

MsPeachh · 05/01/2020 17:00

Honestly I do not understand why old people who are clearly not fit insist on driving and cause mayhem. I hate driving in certain conditions so I will get the bus as I feel much safer, and I pay for the privilege. The elderly get the bus for free. Swallow your pride and get on the bloody bus!

bettybattenburg · 05/01/2020 17:06

Yep, have the pav and we'll throw in a decent (ish)PM for good measure....maybe!

mbosnz · 05/01/2020 17:07

But hands off the flat white.

bettybattenburg · 05/01/2020 17:08

agree with that - an Aussie relative once asked if I'd tried a new Aussie coffee Shock..and it's not a PM swap, just a loan OK?

EuphorbiaHemlockthe1st · 05/01/2020 23:05

Realistically if you are too confused or infirm to drive a car you are most likely too unfit to walk half a mile to the bus stop, then carry all your shopping back with you. Giving up the car can mean being housebound - using taxis is the other option but I'm sure that would be seen as an extravagance by many (obviously it's not an extravagance if you leave the house once a week for your shopping which is all from one shop but that's very restricted and doesn't compare to hopping in the car on a daily basis).
