So a cousin is ttc her first child and is 40.. She will be 41. She's worried (and so am i for her) about missing the chance and boat to have a baby. Is it really possible at that age or not? She said that doctors say at 40 you're eggs are almost gone and there's hardly any left.

All it states on the internet is that a woman isn't very much fertile once she hits 35 so it's becoming worrisome.

Sorry English isn't first language but i tried!
Thank you!

I had my first and only child at 42 - conceived naturally and very quickly after a couple of MMCs.

TabbyMumz · 29/12/2019 11:13

They say you can get pregnant up to about the age of 53 ish. Drs advise people to still use some sort of contraception up to then, so of course you can get pregnant at 40. Lots of people I know are having babies at 40 ish.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 29/12/2019 11:14

Like others have said it is totally dependent on your (or your friends in this case ) body and their partners but I've known several people who had their first after 40. Plus frankly I'm 40 and do not risk a single thing as I dont wish to be pregnant as I've had my DC. I take the same precautions I did when I was 25. I've known several who didn't and now have another child.

However I do know friends who were on infertility treatment that were told their chances went down after 35 but there were preexisting issues.

This isn't really something anyone can answer for your friend I'm afraid.

ChristmasFluff · 29/12/2019 11:17

My sister conceived (naturally) multiple times in her 40s. Only two pregnancies came to term though, last one in her late 40s.

BlouseAndSkirt · 29/12/2019 12:33

So your responses here are completely skewed

No, the responses here are accurate: individual women giving individual responses.

Showing that women can and do have successful pregnancies after 40.

It isn’t a statistical study. If it was it would be v flawed for many reasons.

Crack1ngC0medy · 29/12/2019 12:50

Tabbymumz is correct it is advisable to use contraception until 50+ for women

Therefore that is why some people have pregnancies in their 40s

Oliversmumsarmy · 29/12/2019 12:57

Pregnant first time trying in late 30s,

Then first time again at 40, gave birth at 41

No help. I was also in the very over weight category

LazyDaisey · 29/12/2019 13:39

The question was can you get pregnant? As opposed to did you have a viable pregnancy? Or if you’re 40+ and you tried to conceive naturally, did you succeed?

Questions can be skewed to get the biased answers you’re looking for without them being part of a scientific study Grin

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 29/12/2019 13:44

A friend of mine had her first baby at 41. Another had her second (and third) at 45. I know several mums that had another baby well into their forties because their “babies” were growing up.

I wouldn’t choose do it myself but it’s certainly possible.

kenandbarbie · 29/12/2019 14:08

I am 44 and had a baby naturally at 43 with two months trying. I previously had to have ivf for twins at 35 and another naturally at 38 with one month trying. My mum had me at 44 by accident with teenage siblings.

HoldMyLobster · 29/12/2019 14:51

This is very relevant to me as I'm 50, have no periods because of the depo shot, and have no menopausal symptoms. My doctor has been testing my blood periodically to see if I'm peri-menopausal or menopausal, so that we can work out if/when I can stop using contraceptives. At the moment all the signs are that I'm fertile.

It is quite weird at 50 to be worried about getting pregnant but I'm not taking any risks.

Naturebelle · 06/09/2020 23:27

@SoftSheen

I knew someone who was single at 42, and by 44 was married and had given birth to her first (and only) baby. So it is possible for some.
That is heartening to know. I turned 40 this year (still trying to get over it lol!) and single, so there's still hope. Lockdown hasn't helped in meeting someone though :-(
romany4 · 07/09/2020 00:49

My SIL has just had her first and a complete surprise baby at 42. She's now hoping to try for number 2 by Christmas!

Leaannb · 07/09/2020 01:12

Jad my last at 45

caringcarer · 07/09/2020 01:45

I got pregnant at 42 but unfortunately had a very late miscarriage.

Sef89 · 28/06/2021 21:36

@MaryShelley1818 just wondered if you had any luck?

EwwSprouts · 28/06/2021 21:44

I think it’s more common than the medical establishment would have you believe.

Agree with this. Unscientific but most of my friends had their first between 38 and 43. None IVF.

EwwSprouts · 28/06/2021 21:46

Zombie thread!

Hello, yes I did indeed :)
All of our fertility investigations were cancelled due to Covid and I just fell pregnant naturally. Was a surprise after 18mths!

I'm now 43 with a toddler and a lovely Squishy 4mth old baby x

Wishihadanalgorithm · 28/06/2021 22:08

Had my first (and only) at 40. Total accident.

colincarrot · 28/06/2021 22:11

Had my ds at 40

Rufus27 · 28/06/2021 22:17

I’m 49 with a 5 year old. In his class at school, at least six mums are over 45 (so conceived over 40). Two also have children in their 20s.

Livingintheclouds · 28/06/2021 22:21

I had mine at 41 and 43, sister had one at 45, cousin at 40, friend at 42, another at 46. All conceived naturally.

Shmithecat2 · 28/06/2021 22:21

I did. Conceived naturally at 39, gave birth to ds at 40. Spontaneous labour, vaginally birth, no instruments. My aunt had her last of 7 at 42. My grandmother had her last of 13 at 45. There's 3 mothers in my baby group that were older than me when we had our babies. It can and does happen, quite a lot!

Rno3gfr · 28/06/2021 22:22

My mum conceived me first try at 36, she wanted another but went through the menopause at 40. I think it just depends on when menopause starts in individual women. There’s no point worrying for now, just keep trying.
