To ask about baby nighties......

Rubyupbeat · 28/12/2019 19:25

Are they becoming a thing now?. A bit like Spanish baby clothing, very traditional.
I make baby/toddler clothing, on a very small scale, more word of mouth.
I remember mine wearing these nighties, there were obviously babygros, but I just loved the feel of them on baby.
I've seen them for sale more and more.
Anyway, deciding to make up some, embroidered and some smocked, probably personalised, Do you think it could be a popular item?
I've attached a photo of the sort of style I mean, they will be in white flannelette.

i used these too for mine - very hard to source....in the end got them shipped from 'carters' in the US, then found a few in john lewis.
so so easy for nighttime!
they were all elasticated at the bottom though, no drawstrings.

RossPoldarksWife · 28/12/2019 20:28

I had these from M & S last year for my granddaughter.
So easy and practical my daughter bought some to use at home.
They were elasticated and made of stretchy cotton.

Notso · 28/12/2019 20:33

I loved these for my newborns so much easier for nappy changes. I got them from GAP they had thick elastic at the bottom.

Cremebrule · 28/12/2019 20:51

I wouldn’t have used them as I think a baby grow would be safer and my two had very leaky poos. Vests and sleep suits contained it. With a nightie I’d have been changing bedding every night.

bruffin · 28/12/2019 20:53

I had a couple when DC were little, so much more practical than awful babygros

Boholady · 28/12/2019 20:56

I had these (complete with drawstring at the bottom) from Mothercare in 1989 for my eldest. Little embroidered ducklings across the front 😍

HideYourBabiesAndYourBeadwork · 28/12/2019 20:58

I prefer nice, soft, standard babygros and would worry they would ride up/get twisted (both of mine were very wriggly babies) and therefore wouldn’t be safe. They look cute though I guess.

managedmis · 28/12/2019 20:59

No way would I use these

sleepymummy2019 · 28/12/2019 21:07

I wouldn’t use them, I think they’d get bunched up and be uncomfortable for a baby. Also they’d be entirely hidden beneath the sleeping bag so you wouldn’t see the decoration.

Also I don’t like frills etc on babies, I think it looks silly. But obviously that’s just my taste.

They might sell ok but I don’t imagine it catching on really.

LaurieMarlow · 28/12/2019 21:12

Nope. Babygros are far more practical.

ToTheRegimentIWishIWasThere · 28/12/2019 21:16

Baby bundlers from John Lewis/Marks & Spencer I used when DC was a newborn and would use again. No way would I use anything with a drawstring anywhere near a sleeping baby.

I probably wouldn't buy them from an independent seller because you never know if they've been tested properly. Beautiful though they are, it's not worth the risk.

eosmum · 28/12/2019 21:22

I had them for DDs 27 years ago. Loved them, they were called baby gowns and were made from flannelette. Couldn’t get them for DS 13 years ago, missed them as so much harder to do a quick nappy change and keep baby asleep.

RudolphIsMySpiritAnimal · 28/12/2019 21:23

I'd forgotten, but I had my DS in these as a newborn, because he was tiny. He looked utterly adorable. 😍

justaperson · 28/12/2019 21:35

Used these for both mine when tiny. One had elasticated bottom so it didn't ride up. Other had poppers down the front and was sewn up at the bottom (if that makes sense). Was also one which had poppers that could somehow either be like a nightie or be poppered into legs - can't remember exactly how! Made nappies really easy in the night...

namechangetheworld · 28/12/2019 21:44

I wish I'd known about these when my DDs were younger. I hate babygrows with a passion. They're ugly, have far too many fiddly poppers for 2am nappy changes, and once babies were learning to toddle the feet were a nightmare for slipping on the hard floors. These would have solved all of my problems! I would probably only use them in warmer weather though as I'd be worried about little legs getting cold at night.

thecapitalsunited · 28/12/2019 21:51

If you make that design you’ll probably need to treat it with chemicals to comply with the law around children’s nightwear unless you stick to sizes under 3 months - there’s an official chest measurement to comply with for sizing. Cotton won’t necessarily pass the requirements on its own because it does catch fire.

kenandbarbie · 28/12/2019 22:15

I don't think I'd buy one as they'd ride up?

winniesanderson · 28/12/2019 22:22

Frugi used to sell them, I don't know if they still do. I've seen lots of parents rave about them on different Facebook groups. I can see they'd be great for nappy changes and they do look cute.

PippaPug · 28/12/2019 22:36

I have very recently bought some from JL and M and S - they are either newborn, 0-3 or 3-6 months - I love them! Makes nappy changes so much easier and have done it when baby has not stirred my twins are due early next year and wanting to get as much sleep as possible!

ginandgingers92 · 28/12/2019 22:49

My little one will be born with a club foot and will have the various castings and boots that the condition entails. I've just bought some of these because I imagine they'll be a bit of a godsend for night changes- with elastic at the bottom

ginandgingers92 · 28/12/2019 22:51

And yes, frugi still sell them; they've got some in the sale!

NearlyGranny · 28/12/2019 23:22

I had these 30 years ago for my 3!

Current trend is an enormously elongated, long-sleeved, envelope-neck vest affair in soft jersey with shaped ties at the bottom, worn with a matching knotted hat. I have ordered these sleep gowns in from the US (a company called Solly Baby) and am making more for my unborn DGC at the request of DDiL.

Totally Wee Willie Winkie. I am doing stripes, red on white and grey/white.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/12/2019 23:41

I had these for baby no.2 - climate was too hot for babygros.

Thinnish white winceyette type cotton, with embroidery on the yoke.
They were lovely - I still have one.
Babies always used to wear such things before babygros.

CecilyP · 28/12/2019 23:54

I had a couple of very similar for new born DS 30 years ago. They looked cute but I found they rode up, so no real advantage over just a long sleeve vest. Also, if a little bit of poo leaks out of the nappy, a babygro contains it, whereas a nightie does not. So, though I bought 2 before DS was born, I never bought any more.
