Every year we have family around for a night over Christmas and play games etc. This year my cousin is home with her recently turned 4 year old - closet child in age is 9. We usually do a family quiz and heads up etc - what can I do to include the 4 year old? I can think of a few questions for her eg re:frozen etc. Is there any other games we could play, that doesn’t involve me buying anything? Someone mentioned “the ruler game” but I don’t know what that is? Any other games that everyone from a 4 year old to an 80 year old will enjoy please let me know!

Snap?!

Bloomburger · 28/12/2019 17:38

There's a card game called snip snap snorem which our DCs have been playing since 4 years of age which is good. It's easy but you can look up rules, they are on line. Sorry I've got o put DD to bed so can't type them out.

What about her reading some of the questions rather than answering? Having a kids round which involves lots of questions that are about Peppa etc?

Shesellsseashellsontheseashore · 28/12/2019 17:39

Wink murder?

hereiamagain84 · 28/12/2019 18:01

I’ll look up the card game - there will be 15 of us - we usually do things in teams. She just turned 4 on 19th December so she can’t read lol

We played a quiz round one year where we were shown a colour swatch and everyone had to go and find something in the house that colour. When they were all brought back to the quizmaster the one that was closest to the colour of the swatch got points. Same quiz also had a round where we had to guess crisp flavours, one where we had to model things in play doh for others to guess and and one where we had to make the best snowman by wrapping someone in toilet roll (in our team we wrapped the smallest child and sent the other one off to find accessories). The kids had a lot of fun with these and in some cases did better than the adults!

My brother once played a bunch of children show cartoon theme songs from when my parents were little, we were little and the current kids were little.
He'd play a few seconds and then we'd guess the show

"Who's most likely to [insert a scenario here]?"

Look up christmas snowball catchers - make a cone on your head out of paper, team who catches the most snowballs wins.

RuggerHug · 28/12/2019 18:50

Bingo?

Stravapalava · 28/12/2019 18:55

Uno is always a hit. You can get a kids version that grown ups can enjoy too. My DDs have been playing "proper" Uno since about 4 though.

Winter2020 · 28/12/2019 18:56

Family fortunes - but Google the questions/answers and find some that are suitsble
E.g. name something red

  • then when it's the four year olds turn give them lots of help/clues or whisper them ideas.
mdh2020 · 28/12/2019 19:03

How about Beetle? It’s fun for everyone.
Chinese whispers.
Fill a match box. How many items can you find to put in one?
Picture consequences: you draw a funny head, fold the paper over and pass it on, the next person draws a body, folds it over, the next draws the legs and the last person the shoes.

Thanks some good ideas. Might do some kind of bingo round too we mainly do competitive games in teams but we can change it up to include my cousins daughter too

Dd2 loves uno - she can play it all day

user1493413286 · 28/12/2019 20:39

Bingo and uno; on games she can’t play her get involved in keeping scores. Maybe with her own special notebook etc

SodaSodaBanana · 28/12/2019 20:43

What about the ‘concentration’ game - there’s a few versions online, but you clap in time and list themes until someone drops the rhythm or doesn’t answer. The themes could be more focused to the younger players (Disney princesses, pizza toppings, CBeebies characters) - and the adults can level the playing field with a couple of gins?

SentimentalKiller · 28/12/2019 20:45

Dobble

flowerstar19 · 28/12/2019 20:49

The chocolate knife and fork game with hat, gloves, scarf etc? Might be a bit young but might be okay? My soon to be 5 year old would love that!

georgialondon · 28/12/2019 20:55

Musical chairs!

isittheholidaysyet · 28/12/2019 20:58

2 I've been told about this year (But not played)

Musical hats. Throw (santa) hats at each other across the room. When the music stops put them on. Whoever doesn't have a hat is out. Remove a hat and try again. Till one person remains with final hat.

Fill 2 large socks (or Santa hats) with a selection of small items. Make sure there is the same in each sock.
E.g. match, key, teaspoon, dice, egg cup small stone, cotton reel etc.
Two people take a sock each. Games master announces an item, first player to find it in their sock and produce it, is the winner.

PanicAndRun · 28/12/2019 21:03

Your own version of pictionary if you don't already have it.

Guess the baby...gather all the baby pictures you can get your hands on.

The cereal box game. Put a cereal box on the floor. The players need to pick it up with their teeth without using any hands or their bum/knees touching the floor. Every round cut the box smaller and smaller. Whomever can't pick up the box is out until only one person is left.

Things like game of life, spot the difference, happy families etc.

Lou898 · 28/12/2019 21:13

Items on a tray. 1 min to look at it. 1 min to write everything down.
Then remove one item first team to say what’s missing and so on. Items in a bag ....guess by feeling.

Lou898 · 28/12/2019 21:15

Card game pairs. ...cards all out face down find the pair teams take it in turns.

SouthWestmom · 28/12/2019 21:17

Charades. Just stick to kids films

GameSetMatch · 28/12/2019 21:24

Kim’s game? Place items on a tray people look at the items on the tray for ten seconds then you remove one and people try to guess what item you removed.
What’s in the box? Find an empty box and one person chooses something to put in the box in secret, then people ask questions to deter what is in the box.
