He keeps getting small out breaks of spots and he’s self conscious. What are your tried and tested wisdom of ideas?

I’ve heard of a couple of things over the counter - Acyclovir and Accutane which apparently work wonders. Don’t be put off if you Google and it says for cold sores it’s meant to be great for acne generally. That’s what my Botox nurse told me anyway!! 😊

NotExactly9 · 28/12/2019 09:58

So sorry, not tried and tested by me personally.

Halleli · 28/12/2019 10:00

You CANNOT get accutane over the counter. Even GPs can’t prescribe it. You have to get a referral to dermatology in order to be put on accutane.

Poursomesugaronme88 · 28/12/2019 10:02

Superdrug tea tree range. Facial wash and toner. My husband swears by it

Halleli · 28/12/2019 10:02

I would go to your GP, OP. He or she will be able to prescribe a topical cream to deal with small outbreaks - maybe benzoyl peroxide, maybe duac/epiduo.

threechildren · 28/12/2019 10:02

Make sure he does not squeeze them.

Payot Pate Grise. At night. Warm flannel in morning to gently wash off. Make sure he puts it on all the little and big ones.

Amazing stuff. Works for my 13 year old and 11 year old.

TwiddleMuff · 28/12/2019 10:03

Accutane has been linked to depression and suicides - was a story in the Guardian this week. And it’s for serious acne - not small outbreaks of spots.

exLtEveDallas · 28/12/2019 10:05

I have to second going to the docs. We spent a year buying and trying every damn thing for my DD (neat witchhazel seems to work best) but nothing really helped.

Finally went to the doc and she was prescribed Duac. One month in and the difference with remarkable. 2 months and she has rare breakouts and overall I would say 80% less spots. It has made such a difference to her.

Woopdewoop · 28/12/2019 10:06

La Roche Posay Effaclar. Definitely works.

sameasiteverwasantiques · 28/12/2019 10:07

Benzoyl peroxide I swear by when I get a break out.

Bellesboo2 · 28/12/2019 10:07

I'm another one for the la roche posay effaclar duo face wash. Its targeted for oily acne prone skin, while also being sensitive.
My daughter then uses freederm the one at 4.69 followed by freederm overnight serum. That combo has reduced my daughters acne massively, not to mention her overall texture and skin condition

Beagled · 28/12/2019 10:09

I used to get prescription strength benzyl peroxide; however it’s worth trying the over the counter version first. He’ll need to moisturise as it’s very drying. I’m very spot prone still, even at 30. My go to face wash is a biore charcoal one, it’s about £4 from sainsburys.

Charliebong · 28/12/2019 10:10

Honestly, I would go to the GP. We wasted alot of time and money trying over the counter stuff that didn't work.

The doctor was much more sympathetic than I expected and my daughter's skin is so much better now.

Ohffsanywilldo · 28/12/2019 10:10

V55 max is the only thing I've tried that clears me up.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 28/12/2019 10:21

If they're just teenage spots rather than full blown acne I'd teach him to get into a good skincare routine. DS1 is 14 and has spots but not terribly, so I've bought him a pot of Elemis cleanse balm and taught him to use it twice a day and it's changed his skin no end. It's gentle enough to not damage the skin and used with a hot flannel feels lovely on sore skin.

ItsMischerWavy · 28/12/2019 10:23

Freederm wash and moisturiser thing worked wo ders for me in my early twenties

CherryPavlova · 28/12/2019 10:26

Go to GP and get some Duac cream. Don’t wait until his face is covered and there is a risk of scarring. Don’t use dodgy Botox nurses advice!

Lsquiggles · 28/12/2019 10:27

The only thing that saved my skin was the body shop tea tree anti blemish solution

Wonderbag · 28/12/2019 10:32

DD lives the body shop tea tree target gel - it’s quite expensive for what it is, so often just uses tea tree

NotExactly9 · 28/12/2019 10:59

@Halleli okay...sorry! Was just passing on what I’d heard, I didn’t prescribe her it myself! Grin

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 28/12/2019 11:01

I’m another who swears by tee tree

MrsL2016 · 28/12/2019 11:05

Tea tree and witchazel works for me. Boots and Superdrug do their own versions.

nottomgates · 28/12/2019 15:22

Thanks for all the suggestions. We’re away for a couple of days so will try the tea tree and witch hazel. When we’re home I’ll make a GP appointment. Thanks again.

’ve heard of a couple of things over the counter - Acyclovir and Accutane

Acyclovir is an antiviral, not an antibacterial, so won't work against acne. It's for cold sores (herpes) which are caused by a virus.
