I know it’s the time to relax and watch TV but can’t believe how DH and his family just go from film to film to film. DH will happily watch a random film from the half way point. He also loves subtitles! I’ve really noticed it this Christmas. I dint mind settling down for a good film but my attention span can only cope with one.Yet I’m the odd one out so nobody to play a game with etc. Anyone else like me?!

Subtitled films suggests they might be watching something interesting.

😂 Not really. Nowadays subtitles are easy and cheap to do, not like before. Gone are the times when subtitled foreign films was a synonym of interesting and posh

20wedding19 · 27/12/2019 19:16

I feel your pain! My husband does this. I love a good film too but I can't handle two back to back let alone anymore.

housinghelp101 · 27/12/2019 19:18

All I want for christmas next year is...some decent TV. I haven't watched a thing this year, the TV guide tells me it is exactly the same stuff that has been on for the last ten years. If I see Nanny McPhee on again next year I will lose the will to live. One of the highlights for me as a child was the good films, now we seem reduced to Home Alone (II, III, IV) Beethoven (II, III, IV) Nanny McPhee and various other twee christmas films.

BackforGood · 27/12/2019 19:19

I don't think it is the content or quality of the film that is the issue - that is always going to be subjective. The point is, why invite people round / arrange to spend the day together if you are going to watch back to back films rather than talk to each other or interact in different ways.

Yoshimi2019 · 27/12/2019 19:21

I might be out of touch...I assume foreign language film means they haven't put on ITV/Channel 5 and watched whatever happens to be showing. I thought they would have had to actively seek the film out suggesting an interest in films. Or watched the handful which make it big and therefore tend to be reasonably decent films.

HavelockVetinari · 27/12/2019 19:23

I'm a dreadful fidget so I can't watch a film all the way through unless I'm in the cinema (and even then I sit by the door so I don't disturb people when I nip to the loo or stretch my legs). It's fine though, PIL can watch 3-4 hrs of films at a stretch but I just read my kindle/go for a stroll - I probably have as much screen time as they do over Christmas, I just do it in smaller stretches. Different strokes for different folks. Neither way is better.

littlepaddypaws · 27/12/2019 19:28

someone met my ex inlaws and their family then created to royale family. god you should have heard all the excitement when one of them got a pirated copy of the 'lion king' [1994] before it went on general release, the video was total shite quality wise but they were all enraptured.i sat cringing with the awkwardness of it Grin

SnugglySnerd · 27/12/2019 19:31

YANBU. I cannot bear watching any film from half way through, even if I've seen it before and know the plot. My dad will channel hop and find a favourite film (his favourites, not anybody else's) and just start watching it. It is the most annoying thing! Especially as he tends to favour long and boring war films or westerns.

Dh I suspect also would do this except he knows how irritating I find it so generally doesn't. He stores up all his films I don't like (mainly sci-fi) for when I go out. The good thing about this is that he never minds me having a night out with friends, he practically ushers me out of the door so he can start on his crap films!

GreyGardens88 · 27/12/2019 19:31

7 films in one day is outrageous

Yoshimi2019 · 27/12/2019 19:32

Channel hopping through shit films does sound rubbish. I'd much rather play a board game, or who's in the hat etc.

AllergicToAMop · 27/12/2019 19:38

@GreyGardens88 it isGrin

Exactly...so I think they should acknowledge that there s someone who’d like to do something different occasionally!

I don't watch tv for this reason. I bought dvds for us to watch over Christmas instead.

AllergicToAMop · 27/12/2019 19:58

I've just realised I should have mentioned that we don't watch movies in silence. Actually the opposite and have open plan so even when mixing drinks we are still thereBlush

lilgreen · 27/12/2019 20:07

Oh no you see if I’m watching a film , I don’t talk. Can’t bear chat over dialogue.

AllergicToAMop · 27/12/2019 20:08

We chat and comment. A lot😂

FlossieTeacakesFurCoat18 · 27/12/2019 20:14

I'd love to know what "shit" subtitled films your dh's family's been glued to. The ones that get to be well-known to English speakers tend to be quite good...

decktheantlers · 27/12/2019 20:14

Oh gosh I'm just like you
My dp wants to watch tv all day, movie after movie. I can't cope I leave the room or go for a walk

MrsGrindah · 27/12/2019 20:16

I’m happy to declare my version of shit might be different to yours..but since it’s happening in my house I’m entitled to a view

OP posts:
MrsGrindah · 27/12/2019 20:18

Also we have Netflix and Amazon Prime so ( I assume) it’s fairly easy to find a subtitled film

OP posts:
RoseMartha · 27/12/2019 21:36

I have to watch tv with subtitles because the kids play you tube in the same room or argue and I cant hear a thing over their din.

As for watching film after film seems a bit boring unless you are poorly and it is too much effort to do anything else.

It would be nice to be able to watch one film we could all enjoy though as everyone has different tastes.

OP, that sounds incredibly boring. I think I would have to leave the house.

likeafishneedsabike · 27/12/2019 21:52

The DC have been known to have a double movie day when off sick from school.

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 27/12/2019 22:34

I wouldn't do this when we have guests but every New Year's Eve we have a big camp out in the living room and watch back to back films from about 3pm. The dc try to stay up until midnight but never do tbh dh doesn't either.
