"I went for a walk to clear my head"

What does that mean? Not scenrio specific but when I walk I think:

My jeans are falling down don't wear these ones again to walk in

Oh a person, awkwardly avoid eye contact

Noome around, its quiet, I could get raped/mugged/murdered.

Ooh I really need to work on my fitness

So basically, I don't clear my head at all, would love to know if anyone can describe what the phrase means for them!

A walk/run/swim and a change of scene always helps align my thoughts

I’m not good when I’m with other people for prolonged periods. Sometimes, no matter how much I love my friends and family, I just need time on my own without anyone talking. I love quiet. Walking on my own or with the dog clears my head in that it makes me feel calmer and less tense.

Kaboni19 · 26/12/2019 22:47

IMO 'clear' refers to talking yourself through whatever is bothering you and turning off from everything else.
So when you return you feel clearer on that particular thing.

isittooearlyforgin · 26/12/2019 22:47

I think it’s shorthand for time alone

FunnysInLaJardin · 26/12/2019 22:48

We (me and DH) walk everyday, whether its raining or dark or whatever. We walk for about 2 miles down to the sea and back. We talk about work and what has bothered us, what we are having for dinner or sometimes nothing at all.

It is essential for both of our mental health tbh.

We have done this daily for the last 2 years, and I can't see us stopping anytime soon. We both need it

OrangeSamphire · 26/12/2019 22:49

Sometimes there are too many thoughts. Or emotions. A jumble.

A walk, especially in nature, clears all that away. Other thoughts and emotions might come but the pace of them is slower and their direction less chaotic. All as a result of the walking.

FunnysInLaJardin · 26/12/2019 22:57

oh and I agree with those who observe that nature does its own thing regardless of us. Every night I walk to the sea and think no matter what else is going on the sea doesn't care. It does its own thing and that makes me feel happy

PhilomenaChristmasPie · 26/12/2019 22:58

When you're upset, a walk can clear your head of negativity.

JockTamsonsBairns · 27/12/2019 03:10

Fresh air is not true, it is so polluted no matter where you are really.

Nah, sorry, I'm not buying that. I grew up in a very industrialised area of Glasgow, and then spent a decade in South East London.
You can't seriously be saying that the air quality here in the Dales is every bit as polluted?
When I walk through Swaledale, an area of incredible natural beauty, not another living soul to be seen, no traffic, no factories, no industry, no manufacture - just hills and sheep and sky, and you want us to believe that fresh air isn't true, and that it's all polluted?

DramaAlpaca · 27/12/2019 03:31

All I can say is that if I come home after a difficult day in my stressful job, I am always in a much better state of mind if I go out for a walk with the dog. It clears my head like nothing else.

Cloudykisses · 27/12/2019 03:35

It means to just leave the situation, place or people. That might be causing be bother and I want to leave.

Verily1 · 27/12/2019 10:20

I’d walk more if I felt safer.

I dont feel safe walking alone in woodlands, down isolated paths, unknown streets etc.

But I do love a beach or mountain walk.
