Bloody police - merry sodding Christmas

More than 2 months ago I made a bloody stupid error and just slipped through a red light in queuing traffic though I had actually noticed that a police car was a few cars behind - I don't make a habit of breaking the law, but it does make it even more stupid. He pulled me over a bit up the road (which was horrible - never happened to me before in 15 years of driving) and I admitted my error of judgement and apologised. In my defense (I didn't say this to him as I didn't want to make excuses) it was awful traffic - we had been stuck there for ages and I was visiting an elderly relative who I rarely see and had to nip out for something and felt guilty and stressed at how long it was taking). It was my fault though I know.

Police man said he had written it up and would send it off but 'hopefully' I would hear nothing back in the light of my apology and clean license. He also checked my tyres as he said they were currently focussing on them but he then made no comment on them.

I had my MOT done two weeks later and it failed on one of the tyres, which I thought was odd but never mind. Weeks went by and I heard nothing then on Christmas fucking Eve came the letter. FFS. I have just logged on to try and book a course and I have less than two months to book it because this has taken more than two months to come through. In order to get it done in time I have a choice of two courses that are within 30 miles of me - I live in a central location between two biggish cities. It's ridiculous - I'm going to have to try and get time off but don't want to risk a refusal as then I'd be stuffed so may decide to call in sick, which is not something 'I want to do.

AIBU to think this is shit? If police think you have made an honest fuck-up they shouldn't 'write it up' and if they do it shouldn't be near enough impossible to book a course you have been offered because they have sat on it for more than 2 months?

Everyone thinks they have a special reason that they should be let off this time.
Sorry, you just have to deal with the consequences.
YABU. Don't run red lights.

ChocolateCoins19 · 26/12/2019 15:03

YOU jumped the red light. YOU did so knowingly. The failure of MOT would of had nothing to do with the police inspection at all.. Clearly. You had worn tyre or whatever.

The police are doing their job.

Take responsibility and learn by your actions.
Yes it's annoying sitting in traffic but I'd sooner wait 2 min extra and be longer than cause an accident.. That 2 mins has lost you a day of work and Christmas stress.. All brought on yourself.

Ohyesiam · 26/12/2019 15:03

Op, I know nothing about things like this. Do you mean the police are generally obliged to serve this paperwork sooner, leaving you more time to book a course?

TheWinterCaillech · 26/12/2019 15:04

Reallybad, perhaps the MN response is because entitled arses injure and kill thousands a year, so to have someone whining because the ‘bloody police’ did their job is ridiculous and something that the rest of us should be grateful for.

NThound · 26/12/2019 15:04

Wtf - where have I said I'm middle-class?? I don't think this happening to me evens up the racism directed at young black men does it??

I'm not blaming the police for me failing the MOT and obviously I've changed the tyre since then Hmm, but I think it's surprising that he didn't either book me for that too if it was already gone my then, or mention that it was getting close - not to save me from failing the MOT (which makes no difference to anything anyway as you just have to fix things that need fixing) but because of safety.

Chocolatemouse84 · 26/12/2019 15:04

You have 2 choices.

Suck it up and take the time to do one of the course, which although is a pain will get it sorted
Or
Take the hit and take the points.

You admit you made a mistake, do you really want to try and argue your penalty, when you know you did wrong and have it drag out even longer?

countrygirl99 · 26/12/2019 15:04

I witnessed an accident where a car jumped a red light. The motorcyclist was killed instantly and I won't go into detail but it was gruesome. I have sympathy for his family, for the emergency services who have to deal with the consequences, for witnesses but not for knobs like tou.

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 26/12/2019 15:05

Ask them if you can take the course online, in your own time. Or even better, ask them if you can have someone else do it for you. That would make it so much easier for you. I’m sure they’ll accommodate you.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 26/12/2019 15:06

So now you're saying it wasn't an accident. You meant to go through it because you were in a rush.

Obviously, the rules of the road that apply to everyone else most definitely should NOT apply to you. Especially if you are in a rush.

Icanflyhigh · 26/12/2019 15:06

Pretty overwhelming response there OP that YABU.
You jumped a red light, you take the consequences.
And if you pull a sicky to do the course at your employers expense, I hope you get caught out for that too.
About time you took responsibility for your own actions.

BlaueLagune · 26/12/2019 15:06

Why can’t you just book a days leave? You don’t have to tell your employer what it’s for if you don’t want to. I had to do that, actually I was just honest, nobody made any comment

This. In real life nobody is perfect - ignore all the sanctimonious holier than thou contingent on here - I don't believe for a minute none of them have ever broken a speed limit, for example. I remember a work colleague claiming that a few years ago and it so happened that I followed her partly home that evening and she did go over the speed limit.

I think you have a point with the time it has taken to come through - if you are supposed to have say 3 months to book a course and it's taken 2 months for the letter to get to you then the 3 months should be extended by 2 in my view. But if not, you'll just have to go with it.

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 26/12/2019 15:06

Everyone thinks they have a special reason that they should be let off this time.

What’s funny about this is OP doesn’t even think this. She knows she has no special reason, just doesn’t want to be inconvenienced by doing the course. Grin

SoftSheen · 26/12/2019 15:08

YABU

halocompanach · 26/12/2019 15:08

so I d think I'm a pretty good driver and, though I was in the wrong here, there was no risk of accident.

No risk of an accident? That's complete and utter nonsense. If you believe that there is no risk of accident when you go through a red light then you shouldn't be driving.

You are unreasonable, arrogant and unpleasant.

Hingeandbracket · 26/12/2019 15:08

I had my MOT done two weeks later and it failed on one of the tyres, which I thought was odd but never mind
You were exceptionally lucky not to get 3 points and a fine for this. You claim to be a responsible and serious driver and yet you have been driving with an illegal tyre?

As for the red light - that was so easy to avoid. No sympathy.

Assume from your use of US spellings this all took place in the USA?

Arnoldthecat · 26/12/2019 15:09

If this is a NIP them surely its time barred..??

NThound · 26/12/2019 15:09

Oh FFS, I looked at the junction and there was nothing coming. Wrong to go through the red light - just - but not dangerous as there was nothing there.

I accept it was my fault and said that in the OP. If the letter had come through within a few weeks I wouldn't be posting. It's the delay and then the lack of availability that's pissing me off. Everyday I see drivers far worse than me. I bloody hope they all get points or courses too.

OP posts:
Chloemol · 26/12/2019 15:09

You may think it’s a shit way to deal with this, but bottom line you broke the law and I would think now have to choice of a course or points? Yes it’s now going to cause you inconvenience but you broke the law so if it causes you an issue then there is only you to blame. Lots of people will have a similar excuse to you, and everyone will be treated the same

Jupiters · 26/12/2019 15:10

You really need to take a step back and think about how you take responsibility for your actions. None of this is the fault of the police

Absolutely this!

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 26/12/2019 15:10

Assume from your use of US spellings this all took place in the USA?

They don’t have MOT in the US.

MrsGarethSouthgate · 26/12/2019 15:11

@NThound The police officer stopped you at the time and told you that you 'were being written up'. That was your NIP.

heartsonacake · 26/12/2019 15:11

YABU. I’m glad it’s inconveniencing you as that should make you less likely to do it again.

ArsenicNLace · 26/12/2019 15:12

Everyone wittering on about NIPs.

There is no need to send one in this case as she was stopped at the scene! It is only needed if you didn't have an accident at the time or your weren't stopped at the scene for certain offences (going through a red light being one of them).

Emelene · 26/12/2019 15:13

YABU. It was your fault and dangerous. As others have said, the course might be useful for you.

ChristmasSweet · 26/12/2019 15:13

You broke the law. Putting you out of your way is a small way to make you see sense next time.

Doesnt sound like you will as you think you're perfect. Try not to kill someone please.
