To think money could actually buy happiness?

I personally feel money could buy happiness
Do you agree?

SabineUndine · 25/12/2019 22:48

It doesn't necessarily buy happiness, it does give you freedom to worry about other things.

doublebarrellednurse · 25/12/2019 22:59

It buys choice which can be pretty close

Kensie · 25/12/2019 23:04

Of course it can.

Iloveacurry · 25/12/2019 23:06

Yes it would make life easier!

SunshineAngel · 25/12/2019 23:12

I've always been dubious when people say money CAN'T buy happiness.

I think it buys the POTENTIAL for happiness, but you have to make wise decisions about what you choose to spend it on.

It changes some people in an amazing way, some people go off the rails.

What I do know, however, is that at this moment in time, while money might not make me deliriously happy for sure, it would certainly stop a lot of major worries that I've been having - and considering it's my main cause of stress in life right now, if someone wanted to pass me a winning lottery ticket I'd certainly be willing to experiment on whether money does, indeed, make you happy!

Idolovechocolategimmygimmy · 25/12/2019 23:15

I think money would certainly make me a lot less stressed and therefore happier. At presenting work to pay bills and childcare. With another on the way I don't know how I'm going to afford it and worry daily. So yes I suppose it can theoretically in my case. However I had a friend who is no longer a friend who was given everything by her parents band inherited so munch money it set her for life. She then bought friendships but was on antidepressants and over time seemed to never have a good word about anyone. We are no longer friends because I had a traumatic experience and she said I don't give her enough attention after everything she's done (actually bought) for me and acted like I owed her. Just a couple of months after my life changing event she said I should be over it now. All those antidepressants, buying friendships (I knew her before she had the money) certainly didn't make her happy.

stuckinthemiddlewithtwats · 25/12/2019 23:22

Yeah I think it can.
Being able to afford to move away from my twatty neighbours would improve my happiness 100-fold. My mental health would also be so much better.

Drecci · 25/12/2019 23:23

The only thing that would make me happy is for my abusive ex who continues to make my life hell to emigrate or have a tragic accident. All the money in the world wouldn't change my particular personal circumstances.

mindproject · 25/12/2019 23:48

Drecci, if you had all the money in the world you could pay your ex to emigrate. Most people would move for a million.

TravelDreamLife · 25/12/2019 23:55

Enough money to give us the freedom to do what we like and buy we want, and be spontaneous about holidays etc. would make me happy. I don't care about flashy lifestyles, I just get sick of being practical, buying cheap crap and rarely going out so we have savings AND an annual holiday.

JacquesHammer · 25/12/2019 23:57

No but it makes being miserable a heck of a lot easier.

Sparklesocks · 25/12/2019 23:58

It doesn’t bring happiness directly but it makes things a lot easier, and takes away a lot of issues, you can focus on the people and things you love when you aren’t struggling to make ends meet - which in turn would make you happier. You could still fall out of love with your spouse, fight with your kids, get sick - but at least you’re not having to do a last minute shift to pay the gas bill.

Ineedaweeinpeace · 25/12/2019 23:59

I know some dull as fuck misery filled bastard millionaires so no don’t agree.

ploughingthrough · 26/12/2019 00:01

It certainly creates security and choices which in turn create happiness.

lorettalemon · 26/12/2019 00:05

In some ways yes it can - it depends on whether your baseline makes you capable of being happy - some people struggle to be whatever they do. But if you spend it on things or experiences you love and enjoy then by definition, that's buying happiness. Having security makes most people happier. A lack of money can certainly cause severe unhappiness. The one thing it can't buy is health. to an extent, it could go towards paying for treatment and therapy. To generalise, people can potentially be happier if they have enough money, but financial hardship will be trying for even the most positive people out there

Bluerussian · 26/12/2019 00:30

Yes in the sense that you don't have constant, niggling worry about finances; however, as has been said, it doesn't buy health for you or your loved ones, rich people still have horrible fatal accidents, they experience heartbreak just as much as a poor person.

For me, being comfortably off is fine, I have no wish to be very rich which can cause difficulties of its own. It's just pleasant to be able to buy things I want, go to places, treat my family and friends but I know I would still have those I care about if I was desperately hard up (which I was years ago). They would probably treat me :-).

It is really nice not to have to worry about making ends meet though, no doubt about that.

Lipperfromchipper · 26/12/2019 00:35

No!! I have some stuff going on right now that NO amount of money could fix unfortunately.

Runnerduck34 · 26/12/2019 13:39

I think money can buy happiness to a large extent. no financial stress would certainly make most people a lot happier. I also think research shows that life expectancy in affluent areas is higher than in areas of depravation, so better food choices, better access to healthcare , quick diagnosis best treatment etc. I don't think it's necessarily just good genes that get members if the royal family to their nineties! Obviously money can't solve everything but it certainly helps a lot !

Serabi · 26/12/2019 14:02

If you have Love and Health then money can buy happiness. But Love and Health are the true foundations of happiness. Money just lets you enjoy the things you live if you're healthy

bluesteakandcheese · 26/12/2019 14:03

@nonamemummy a life where debts are paid off, I could buy a better car and a bigger house in a nice area and never have to work again? That's the dream! Money can definitely buy happiness in my opinion.

user1497997754 · 26/12/2019 14:10

Amy Winehouse had loads of money but it didn't make her happy. I think if you are not happy then money can make it worse because if you have no money and are unhappy at least you have the thinking that if you had money there was a possibility if being hapoy

Dozer · 26/12/2019 14:14

There have been psychology studies on this, interesting podcast summarising this by a US professor - an episode of the Happiness Lab.

Says that, up to a certain (fairly high - way higher than average earnings) level money IS likely to make us happier, but over that, it won’t.

People also care v much about our financial position relative to others we live near/work with.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 26/12/2019 14:27

I think money brings freedom of choice so in that respect it can bring happiness. It can't fix an unhappy relationship, or erase bad memories..so it depends what happiness means to you really.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 26/12/2019 14:30

I really don't envy mega rich people. Imagine having all that responsibility. What if the stock market crashes? What if someone kidnaps a loved one for ransom? What if you never feel someone wants to be your friend for you rather than what you can give them?

The80sweregreat · 26/12/2019 14:35

It's a mixed blessing. I don't think extreme wealth brings much happiness as lots of very rich people seem unhappy ( thinking of celebs that seem to beak up a lot etc yet have it all) plus a lot of lottery winners end up splitting up as well!
Having a bit put aside does reduce the stress if the boiler breaks or the washer packs up or something. I would hate to go back to those really penny pinching days and my mum having to help me out to buy a new oven when the old one finally packed up! It's the root of a lot of evil in my book.
