To think money could actually buy happiness?

I personally feel money could buy happiness
Do you agree?

OP posts:
Nimello · 25/12/2019 20:50

It could certainly buy me happiness.

Having money makes you happy with things which require money.

It doesn't make you happy about other stuff.

Alarae · 25/12/2019 20:54

I think it can take away a lot of stress and provide temporary happiness which quickly fades (luxuries).

It cannot buy you everything though. One of my clients is extremely wealthy (150m+) but is on his third divorce and lonely. As PP have said, it also can't save you from any personal struggles such as mental health.

Lgxo · 25/12/2019 20:56

I’d be a lot happier if I was out of debt and didn’t have to worry about bills. Yes.

maddening · 25/12/2019 20:58

For me yes it would, but I am not currently surrounded in drama or tradegy my life, I guess it is subjective.

soph7777 · 25/12/2019 21:00

No it doesn't. It makes life easier, not happier. Unless you mean the difference between a homeless person and having basic needs like food water etc then yes.

Numerous studies have proven once you get past a certain income (in the region of 50k I think) happiness levels do not increase

beautifulstranger101 · 25/12/2019 21:04

Yes and no.

Yes- money buys you freedom and choices. Choice to spend your time however you want without having to slog your guts out in a horrible job. Choice to go for private healthcare, holidays, self care etc Choice whether to work part time or not, choice to stay at home if you wish, Freedom to buy what you want, not to have to worry constantly about money or whether you'll have enough to pay the mortgage/rent this month etc etc

No- Studies have shown that happiness increases up to certain income (being comfortable) and after that, people are no happier the more money they have.
Money couldn't stop my mum or my dad dying, or my friend's young daughter dying, or my friend having cancer etc. I'd give every penny I inherited from my parents' death to be able to see them just one more time and in that sense, money is absolutely meaningless and no comfort at all. Also, if it was as easy as money= happiness then why are so many mega rich people miserable, suicidal, depressed and addicted to various substances. Self worth has to come from within, not from money.

Dontdisturbmenow · 25/12/2019 21:04

It should, but most people end up taking for granted what they have, compare themselves with those who have more and are unhappy because they don't has much as them.

Money makes you happy if you know where to draw the line to just not having to worry about losing what you already have rather than having more.

FloraGreysteel · 25/12/2019 21:06

Yes.

ArranUpsideDown · 25/12/2019 21:06

Do you think Anders Holch Povlsen is happy? He is a billionaire.

Money can't protect you from tragedies.

For most of life's vicissitudes, it can provide useful insulation.

speakout · 25/12/2019 21:08

It certainly helps.

And when crisis situations happen then things are easier.

Ninkanink · 25/12/2019 21:08

To be fair, and to answer the OP exactly as it was asked, yes, it’s possible that in some cases money could buy happiness. Happy people tend to stay happy if they happen to come into money. Unhappy people stay unhappy.

BoxedWine · 25/12/2019 21:10

It can buy you a lot of things you can't be happy without.

Octopus37 · 25/12/2019 21:11

Not sure that money brings happiness as such but I think it can bring peace, freedom and allow you to feel that you are on a level with other people. It can also mean that even when the chips are down, the chips can be down in comfort.

speakout · 25/12/2019 21:11

Money can't protect you from tragedies.

No it can't but it can ease situations. Jumping in taxis, takeaway food when you don't have time to cook.
I had a breast lump last year- waiting time for tests was 8 weeks on NHS. I paid to go private and had tests ( and all clear thankfully) within 24 hours.

BentNeckLady · 25/12/2019 21:16

It would for me as it would give me the chance to spend more time doing what I love doing and less time working ( which I consider a complete waste of my life)

If a person isn’t made happy by that then there’s something wrong with them.

BentNeckLady · 25/12/2019 21:17

vicissitudes

Fabulous word!

JaceLancs · 25/12/2019 21:18

No - but lack of it brings misery

ArranUpsideDown · 25/12/2019 21:19

Me: Money can't protect you from tragedies.

speakout: No it can't but it can ease situations. Jumping in taxis, takeaway food when you don't have time to cook.

Which is why I added: "For most of life's vicissitudes, it can provide useful insulation."

19lottie82 · 25/12/2019 21:20

It’s one less thing to worry about, but can money alone, buy happiness? No.

Coughsyrupsucks · 25/12/2019 21:21

It buys you freedom, not so sure it buys happiness.

SleepingStandingUp · 25/12/2019 21:25

Well money alone isn't enough, because you can't buy love or contentment etc.

But money would buy us a larger house, which would make having 3 kids a bit easier. It would take some financial strain off us. I could afford driving lessons and a car, which would def make 3 kids easier...

Some of those things would make me happier, would reduce famy stress ehich would make us both happier. Would remove the worries over me returning to work and how we balance that with childcare costs. Less stress would make me happier.

So yes, in my present life money would make me happier but I wouldn't trade my current life for money

Besidesthepoint · 25/12/2019 21:26

If your child dies, you learn how unimportant money and your own health are. Do you seriously think you will be happy after your children have died but then someone gifts you a million?

hamstersarse · 25/12/2019 21:27

Money takes away misery

But it doesn’t buy happiness

Very different things
