To think other supermarkets should follow Waitrose lead and close on Boxing Day

So hard on the workers.
My Asda is open from 8 am on boxing day, not even sunday hours.

Next is open at 5.45 tomorrow I think that is also unnecessary.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 25/12/2019 09:18

God not this again

Sparklybaublefest · 25/12/2019 09:19

oh @MythicalBiologicalFennel spoiling for a fight? surely not.

I don’t see a problem with the shops being open 🤷🏼‍♀️
It’s just another day. Pick a different job where you don’t have to work those kind of hours if you don’t like it.

Sparklybaublefest · 25/12/2019 09:19

Peace out

There's no 'should' about it, some people really like working on Boxing Day (even on Christmas day!), & there's bound to be a festive atmosphere.

I didn't know Waitrose was closing on BD! I'll have to tell my son when I go to his at lunch time, he lives around the corner to Waitrose (could almost literally roll out of bed into the shop), and does depend on them though I doubt he will run out of anything, he's a good shopper. However Morrisons and Iceland are just up the road too and a couple of little shops so should be OK in an emergency.

PrettyPurpleFeather · 25/12/2019 09:19

I think the only way for the retailers to close on boxing day is for people to stay away from the shops on the 26th. Don't make it profitable for them to open but it's led by the supply & demand principle.

Sparklybaublefest · 25/12/2019 09:19

@Sparkle567 I dont work in any supermarket or any shop, in fact i often have to work as a caring role over christmas

I agree OP. Many people will feel pressured to work.

Pick a different job where you don’t have to work those kind of hours if you don’t like it.

Yes because it’s so easy. You are brimming with compassion.

PrettyPurpleFeather · 25/12/2019 09:21

@Bluerussian check your local Morrisons opening times because mine is closed on Boxing Day as well.

Sparklybaublefest · 25/12/2019 09:23

it is just greed on the part of the retailers, i doubt people would be banging on the shops doors if they were closed.

I imagine there will be some people volunteering to work on Boxing Day so those who don't want to, don't have to. It's the same with hospitals, emergency services, carers etc. Many are happier in their working environment. I do know this, not just surmising.

We're all different.

I am retired now but always liked working in the past.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 25/12/2019 09:29

I agree OP.

Pre internet the Boxing Day sales were a big thing but I cannot for the life of me imagine why anyone would get up early to go shopping nowadays.

And as for food shopping? Boxing Day is leftovers day here.

But I hate shopping anyway.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 25/12/2019 09:31

Lidl isn't open on boxing day either, don't think Waitrose are the leading example of this Grin.

Mrsjayy · 25/12/2019 09:33

I think it was Lidl (or Aldi) who made a thing of closed on boxing daylast year.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 25/12/2019 09:38

Aldi is definitely closed on boxing day.

piercedmyfootonaspike · 25/12/2019 09:43

Many years ago I used to work in a supermarket and never minded the boxing day shift. It wasn't compulsory, we got time and a half and the shift was less busy than the run up to Christmas. I think we also got a free lunch. Not sure if I'd fancy it now I have children but it was great as a young person to get away from the house (annoying family members) for a few hours!

Rachelfromfriends1 · 25/12/2019 09:53

When I used to work in retail a few years ago at uni, I actually liked working Boxing Day because I got paid double🤷🏼‍♀️ as I worked in fashion, my store wasn’t particularly manic either as there wasn’t any great deals to be found, it was just mid-season sale launch!

The main annoying thing was trying to travel from one city for Christmas Day, to another city on Boxing Day as trains don’t run. This is particularly pertinent for students.

Genzeee · 25/12/2019 09:56

Yet again a thread about retail workers. No one needs to go out for their dinner on Christmas Day either but they do. At least retail get the actual day off. They’re not special

AgeLikeWine · 25/12/2019 09:58

It’s not just Waitrose / JL. Aldi & Lidl are also closed tomorrow.

MollyButton · 25/12/2019 10:04

My DS works in retail - for his store Boxing Day is one of the top 4 days for profit in the year. He worked yesterday and will be working again tomorrow (and my DD is working today - with animals).
At least the supermarkets have reduced opening hours.

Bluerussian · 25/12/2019 10:11

It's not that near me, it's up the road to where my son lives, Pretty; I don't think he will need to shop tomorrow but I will check anyway, thanks.

Bluerussian · 25/12/2019 10:13

Yes, Morrisons will be open tomorrow from 9am to 6pm. Iceland and Waitrose closed.

ButterflyBook · 25/12/2019 10:18

I have to work either Xmas day or boxing Day but I often work both because I get paid double. It's worth it to me and it's only a 5 hour shift so can shift celebration around it
.

TurquoiseDress · 25/12/2019 10:20

I'm with you OP!

It's not like we'll all die of starvation the one day the supermarkets are closed.

Often there is so much food, enough to keep going for a few days at least!

Yes some people might 'like' to work over Christmas & Boxing Day but I'd imagine many others would prefer to be with their friends and families during that time.

My cousin is now a GP and during hospital jobs there was no choice whether you worked Christmas Day or whatever, if you were rota'd to work then that was it.

Unless you could find someone willing to swap which was highly unlikely!
