...what you do to make a meal from them more healthful and what other dishes you enjoy.

Not a poverty-question btw. We really just enjoy the taste sometimes and can easily afford other foods.

No, we won’t eat them at Christmas.

My kids and husband think the curry ones are a huge treat. I can't stand them. You can't make them healthy they are full of salt and should be enjoyed occasionally exactly as they are made. Straight from the plastic tub.

Definitely not a poverty question as they are not cheap. Or do you just mean any instant noodle not necessarily those sold in a pot?

Coldhandscoldheart · 24/12/2019 06:17

My husband likes them.
I sometimes have one of the ‘posh’ pot noodles & add frozen vegetables, peas, sweet corn & spinach & some syboes on the top if I’ve got them.

Flyingfish2019 · 24/12/2019 06:20

@Coldhandsvoldheart There are posh potnoodles?

OP posts:
jcurve · 24/12/2019 06:22

Frozen corn, peas & an egg cracked in once they’re cooked. Not hugely healthy but does make it a meal!

Flyingfish2019 · 24/12/2019 06:23

@Mumdiva I am just talking about any kind of pour-water-over-it-ready-to-eat-noodles. I just wrote that comment about poverty because I was afraid that people would think we are that poor that we have instant noodles for Christmas instead of a roast.... because I thought asking questions about pot noodles at Christmas Eve looks a little odd.... however we‘ll have a roast on Christmas and I am just generally interested in pot noodle recipes.

I wouldn’t say I enjoy them but that are excellent hangover food and, for that reason, should never be ‘healthied up’! They should be enjoyed around 10-11am whilst still in pjs 😂

Flyingfish2019 · 24/12/2019 06:32

@LoopyLou You mean to say hangover food because they are easy to cook or because they help against hangover??? I do think there are fooDs which are more helpful... those which contain unsatuated fatty acids... such as fish.

For a quick meal, we add a packet of cup of soup, frozen vegetables, leftover roast chicken, egg or seafood.

Xiaoxiong · 24/12/2019 06:37

I try to buy the plain noodle bricks, or just use the noodles without the sachet, then make miso soup or my own broth after we've had a roast dinner. Then in the broth I simmer sliced veg and tofu or a soft boiled egg cut in half or leftover meat from the aforesaid roast, and add the noodles at the end with some sesame oil, soy sauce and sliced spring onions and coriander on top.

If you have pot noodles with the sachet of powder you can add a sprinkling of the sachet on top at the end as well (not the whole thing, too salty!)

Flyingfish2019 · 24/12/2019 06:38

@Xiaoxiong AIBU to ask you if you are Asian and from a homecountry of potnoodles in bricks?

I love pot noodles. They are utter shite but nice for a guilty treat Grin

SnuggyBuggy · 24/12/2019 06:44

Once in a while I do get the craving.

HavelockVetinari · 24/12/2019 06:46

Chicken and mushroom flavour with white sliced bread is amazing! V rarely eat it because it's so unhealthy but I love it!

Scarylady · 24/12/2019 06:51

Love a chicken and mushroom pot noodle!

I eat them as they come but sometimes just have some bread with it if I’m skipping dinner but I’ve heard about cracking an egg in them as the boiled water cooks the egg through.

doadeer · 24/12/2019 06:55

Not really pot noodles but we eat the bricks of noodles a lot. Use our own stock and add peas/veg, sometimes leftover chicken and usually soy, ginger, garlic and sesame. I don't think they are too unhealthy served like that are they? Just a noodle ramen

Flyingfish2019 · 24/12/2019 06:55

We do crack eggs in them but only into the type you cook in a pan,

We are Asian and eat instant noodles. Could you get to a Chinese supermarket? Buy the Demae Ramen brand and you’ll never look back. If you do it in a pan it’s more work but you can pimp it up very easily.

Great recipe is: boil sliced ginger, add the noodles and flavouring, add splash of sesame oil, coax the noodles apart with a fork, add some greens (watercress, spinach, Chinese leaves etc), crack in an egg, turn the heat off and leave to cook while it cools (you can mix the egg white around but leave the yolk intact to semi-poach). Sprinkle with finely chopped coriander and spring onion and any fried shallots (you can buy a jar in any Chinese supermarket).

Flying yes grew up in Asia but now live in the UK, any Asian supermarket or Wing Yip online or even Amazon sells the plain bricks but you can get the individually packaged brick noodles with sachet in my local Sainsbury's.

Beautiful3 · 24/12/2019 07:05

I like pot noodles but love the ramen noodles you get from supermarkets, I add an oxo cube to them, for flavour. I eat one for lunch sometimes. They are the best.

EugeniaGrace · 24/12/2019 07:09

Me! I love a good pot noodle or a more fancy Asian noodle soup (ramen, pho, you name it). My dh not so much but I’ve been working on him.

I jazz them up with frozen peas, carrot batons, spring onions, coriander, sriracha, sesame oil, white pepper, and or soya sauce.

Flyingfish2019 · 24/12/2019 07:10

@Xiaoxiong I shop at Asian supermarkets all of the time. I love them. I just asked because I have been told that people from Asia had far more sophisticated pot noodle recipes than non-Asians.

OP posts:
EssentialHummus · 24/12/2019 07:17

Love them! Especially a posh brand one (can’t remember the name) with an amazing chilli sauce to drizzle over. I add heaps of broccoli and that’s it.

MrOnionsBumperRoller · 24/12/2019 07:25

Cut a circle of bread out and pop it on the top-A delightful pie!

matchamamma · 24/12/2019 07:38

Not an unreasonable question at all, OP! I love my instant noodles too (esp the ramen variety you can get from Asian grocery stores). As others have mentioned, I usually just add an egg and green leafy veg to mine (when cooking in a pot), but when I've got the time (and the craving!) I like to use the noodle bricks (without the sachets) to make stir fried noodles -- long slices of shallots/ spring onion, minced garlic, grated ginger, veggies (usually carrots and mushrooms), soy sauce, oyster sauce, mirin, and sesame oil. I haven't tried this trick yet (I usually cook my noodles separately) but I've seen recipes where you throw the noodle bricks in the pan with everything else along with some water, pop the lid on and let the noodles soak up the water and soften in the process.
