To ask why there is no must have toy?

Swinesinsleepingbags · 23/12/2019 21:23

It seems like there is not a must have toy, nothing that kids are dreaming of and hoping they have been good enough to get. Is this the end of the commercialisation of Christmas or have kids given up on toys for tech?

OP posts:
Thehop · 23/12/2019 21:24

Given up for tech I reckon.

itgetshardereveryday · 23/12/2019 21:25

The must have toy in this household is a Thomas super station Grin

goose1964 · 23/12/2019 21:27

I was just talking about this to my daughter.

AngelicInnocent · 23/12/2019 21:27

Apparently LOL dolls, whatever they are, are selling out all over my area.

AppleKatie · 23/12/2019 21:29

I don’t think they’ve given up toys for tech just that mass production and commercialism has finally widened the pool enough that there isn’t just ONE must have toy, different kids want different things. Genuine choice.

Nirvana1979 · 23/12/2019 21:29

I was talking about this too,i thought we had just lost touch with these things as my kids are teenagers now but it seems not.

Far2go46 · 23/12/2019 21:31

Finally we have genuine choice, and all it took was the 6th mass extinction Xmas Smile

FthisS · 23/12/2019 21:33

My son 12 is desperate for a hornby GWR. Last year it was the hornby pendolino. He isn't bothered by tech apart from watching youtube videos of trains, hornby or train spotting.

littlepaddypaws · 23/12/2019 21:33

i think parents /carers should be grateful for there not being THE toy this year considering how stupid some people become as wanting to buy one and fights sometimes breaking out as a result. all for something that will be in the charity shops by feb.

FaithInfinity · 23/12/2019 21:34

It’s the LOL ‘glampervan’ for DD! Some of her friends too. I guess it depends on their age but she’s been very firm in that request for a couple of months now. (Although she watched YouTube videos on that and the Barbie Dream camper and compared before making her decision!)

christma5 · 23/12/2019 21:34

As pp said it's LOL dolls that sell out, but they're a stocking filler really.

halcyondays · 23/12/2019 21:35

I thought it was LOL dolls. Im sure younger ones will still want toys.

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 23/12/2019 21:36

The key toy for every 7-9 year old girl I know was a LOL doll big sister. Sold out everywhere. Selling on eBay and Amazon for x3 the actual value.

DD wanted 2, I only managed to get one, couldn’t get the other for love nor money (well, I could get it for money but I refuse to pay £90 for something that retails at £30)

Milsplus3 · 23/12/2019 21:36

I think they are running out of ideas of toys to make now so not much captures children’s attention, they’ve overdone the lol dolls, furby types etc imo and those phases are wearing off. Mine are still happy with simple toys like lego, board games, dolls, barbies etc for now thankfully.

itgetshardereveryday · 23/12/2019 21:36

Kids still love toys, they've not been replaced by tech (except perhaps in older kids?). There's just so much choice now.

slipperywhensparticus · 23/12/2019 21:38

It's a coconut according to my son

ToffeePennie · 23/12/2019 21:39

My son just wants a bike. The little one wants a scooter.

Fatted · 23/12/2019 21:42

Or maybe parents just got sick of this shit and refused to buy into the marketing gimics anymore?

I know with my boys they have a few things they like so we've bought them different toys. Their big toys are Nintendo games though.

ellendegeneres · 23/12/2019 21:46

Thomas super station here too, but tbh that’s thanks to the damn YouTube toy reviews. Tbh I’m excited about it though, I can’t wait to play with it 😂

BertieBotts · 23/12/2019 21:58

No, it's just that there are billions and billions of toys so there isn't one single thing everyone really wants.

If you look at the old vintage argos catalogues you can get online for the 70s and 80s there were far fewer items available in any category. Board games for example, probably a choice of 10-20, now there are literally hundreds.

Sammy867 · 23/12/2019 22:01

There’s a few round here. The age groups I know are 4-7 year old girls

owleez - flying owl
rizmo- kind of like a furby thing
Juno the elephant- for the younger ones
Lol doll ski chalet
Lol doll camper van

Every child in the 4-7 age range I know (and I do see a lot due to my job and family) want one of those things

Katkincake · 23/12/2019 22:20

I agree it’s masses of choice, but also think it’s less exposure to adverts. With the advent of Netflix/NOW tv etc, my DS hardly sees any unless he watches a bit of Pop or CITV in the morning before school, so there’s less opportunity to be ‘sold’ the IT toy.

Poetryinaction · 23/12/2019 22:20

I have 4-7 year olds and have never heard of those, except for LOLs, which I would never buy.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 23/12/2019 23:24

Advert free telly. Lifesaver. BBC licence fee is worth every penny!

LegArmpits · 23/12/2019 23:25

Pictionary Air was impossible to get for a while.
