To ask why there is no must have toy?

It seems like there is not a must have toy, nothing that kids are dreaming of and hoping they have been good enough to get. Is this the end of the commercialisation of Christmas or have kids given up on toys for tech?

OP posts:
Sparklesocks · 23/12/2019 23:28

It’s tech for the kids I know - either top up vouchers for their games, a Nintendo switch etc!

Badabingbadabum · 23/12/2019 23:40

LOL Dolls. I am choosing to ignore them.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 23/12/2019 23:42

My eight year old has asked for a watermelon.

SeperatedSwans · 24/12/2019 00:08

It's imaginex batman stuff in this house for DS5 🙄 must have the jail though, apparently it's very important to have a jail!

FainaSnowChild · 24/12/2019 00:11

My DD is 9 and has gone back to dolls stuff this year, she likes our generation. I refuse to buy lol dolls. Ridiculous prices. She also has slime and Squishies on her list.

Ciwirocks · 24/12/2019 00:15

I think for girls it’s the lol omg dolls, my dd had one on her list and I haven’t been able to get it, she has since said she isn’t that bothered about it 🤷‍♀️ So I have stopped trying. I also struggled to get the jumanji x box game for ds but got one in the end

SquashedOrange · 24/12/2019 00:19

DH and I were having this exact conversation last night!

I have a 5 & 7yo and neither wanted anything in particular. Too young for tech, LOL Dolls have never been my DD's thing (thank goodness!) and it's been really hard to decide what to get them.

We went for hover boards in the end, I don't think they know what they are, but hopefully they will love them!

Walkerbean16 · 24/12/2019 00:19

My parents wanted pictionary air to play on Christmas Day, apparently it was sold out everywhere, they did eventually get the last one in John Lewis.

BillyAndTheSillies · 24/12/2019 00:22

The mentions of the Thomas Super Station has made me nervous! DS asked for a Thomas set, and I've ended up getting the hyper glow track. Hopefully that's the one he wants, I've never even heard of the superstation before this thread.

AlpacaGoodnight · 24/12/2019 00:24

Lol dolls in our house but I do think there is more choice now so the focus isn't one one particular thing this year

BlueCookieMonster · 24/12/2019 00:27

Nintendo poke ball in my house.

SushiGo · 24/12/2019 00:29

It's definitely to do with advertising.

Kids watching a lot of YouTube are seeing so many more and a much wider range of adverts in sponsored content as well as advertising than you had when most kids were watching the same Saturday morning cartoons.

Plus kids who are banned from YouTube are still watching Netflix etc instead of live TV, and therefore skipping all the adverts.

Either way you get a wider range of requests from kids.

theflushedzebra · 24/12/2019 00:45

My DC are older now - they all want techy things. DS1 is 17 and having driving lessons. DD wants an iphone. DS2 wants some sort of disk player for his pc, and a watch.

Oh god, I'm going to have to google LOL dolls now Confused Are they as awful as they sound?!

CheshireChat · 24/12/2019 00:49

The fecking Minecraft pickaxe that also turns into a sword Hmm, not sure of it was really popular (highly doubtful!) or they've stopped making them because no one besides my son wanted one, but it was hard to get, particularly in time for Christmas.

The kids in his classroom (reception) all seem to want switches, without actually getting them according to the parents.

GothMummy · 24/12/2019 00:53

8 year old DD and her 7 year old cousin are both desperate for the Playmobil aquarium. Fortunately Santa has been able to find them one each!

theflushedzebra · 24/12/2019 00:55

I have to say, I'm a bit disturbed by the naked LOL dolls.

highheelsandweathercocks · 24/12/2019 00:56

Mine haven't bought into THE toy so much as they have very clear ideas about what the must have toy for them personally is.

For DS1 (8) it's the Lego Ninjago Dieselnaught.
For DS2 (6) it's the Lego Ninjago Dragon Pit.
They've also got the Ninjago Movie Destiny's Bounty (ship) which they haven't asked for but we know they'll love as a joint gift.

They've got the things they desperately wanted. And a couple of other small bits that we know they'll like because quite frankly all that Lego blew the budget. Unwrapping will be done in five minutes in my house tomorrow.

CheshireChat · 24/12/2019 00:56

Oh, the Playmobil Ghostbusters sets are apparently popular as well.

Are they reincarnations of Troll Dolls?

rhubarbarkle · 24/12/2019 01:07

depends on your kids ages really I think? Glad to see the LOLs are still must haves. The last few years buying them have cost a fortune for absolute rubbish. Luckily she is no longer interested and just wants money for birthday presents, so might suggest we stick the lot of them on eBay (if we can find all the teeny weeny shoes and accessories that the feckers came with).

rhubarbarkle · 24/12/2019 01:12

@GothMummy That Playmobil aquarium broke my patience last Christmas, so many tiny bits (all now gone to the 'Borrowers') takes a while to put together - I know it looks deceptively simple - only thing is it holds a good amount of water but I swore it was the last PlayMobil set I would ever get. However my son is 5 so maybe being 7/8 they will treat it with more respect

oncemorewithfeeling99 · 24/12/2019 01:20

My infant school age child has literally never seen a toy advert - cbebbies and Netflix mean they have no messages coming about the latest thing. We never watch 'normal' TV.

rudolfsquiffy · 24/12/2019 01:24

OMG LOL Doll, no chance, I blame the YouTubers for hying up demand we can't meet here.

A few years ago, DD2 wanted an LOL Pet (yep thank you CookieSwirlC) from Santa but I could only find them on Amazon France, so that is where it came from. I could have got an LOL OMG from the USA if I had realised in time they were not generally available in the the UK but the postage was too much for me.

rudolfsquiffy · 24/12/2019 01:27

Both my DDs play with the LOL dolls all the time, well worth the money for us.
