Is OK isn't it? I would eat it

Yeah I'd use it. It's only a best before date.

Knicknamehistory · 21/12/2019 13:00

Absolutely fine

AllergicToAMop · 21/12/2019 13:01

Best before means just that they can't guarantee flavour/consistency or similar.

Open, smell, taste. I would eat it.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 21/12/2019 13:02

Yeah, I'd eat it. It's been in a sealed jar so unlikely to have gone off especially if it's been kept somewhere cool.

slipperywhensparticus · 21/12/2019 13:03

I ate mine but unfortunately it had brandy in it and that had got a little wild

BrandoraPaithwaite · 21/12/2019 13:03

I just found a jar of mincemeat best before Nov 21 but opened last year and a bit used. I scraped the top layer off and used the rest. Will report back if family are poisoned later today!

Doyoumind · 21/12/2019 13:09

Absolutely fine to use.

ByAppointmentTo · 21/12/2019 13:11

Yes, it will be fine.

PotteringAlong · 21/12/2019 13:12

It will be fine next year! Eat away!

TheWinterCaillech · 21/12/2019 13:14

I added extra alcohol to my out-of-date mincemeat, just to be sure it was safely preserved. Everyone was fine.

Pascha · 21/12/2019 13:16

Oh good. I'll carry on regardless then. Nobody here needs to know.

bridgetreilly · 21/12/2019 13:17

Unless it's fizzy it's fine.

easyandy101 · 21/12/2019 13:17

In about 1000 year's they'll be digging up jars of mincemeat and making mince pies with them to put on Interplanetary Geographic documentaries

Trills · 21/12/2019 13:19

If the jar's properly sealed I would (check the bit in the lid that pops up after opening)

Pascha · 21/12/2019 13:21

The middle but doesn't pop Trills

I'm going with it. Nobody will die.

I do this every year as I buy mincemeat on offer in Jan. BUT did this with Sainsbury's taste the difference a week or two (bbe Nov 19), it was rancid, acidic really obvious taste was off. Advice is to warm up a teaspoon of it in the microwave and taste. If it tastes fermented, and strong ditch it, it just won't taste nice. Had to ditch 24 mince pies cause they weren't palatable and I didn't test. This week Waitrose mince meat from last year, did the teaspoon test and it was yummy. Bbe Oct 19.

Ohyesiam · 21/12/2019 13:22

Definitely.
Dh always boys too many jays and I’ve used them much older than that🤣

LoopyLu2019 · 21/12/2019 13:23

To add, I didn't get ill!!

Pascha · 21/12/2019 13:24

Out of interest I wonder what argument the 1.98 mners who voted yabu have for not feeling safe to use it?

OP posts:
Trills · 21/12/2019 17:38

1 person who was sure and one person who was nearly sure?

Sewrainbow · 21/12/2019 17:56

It'll be fine, the fruit is preserved in the sugar, the fact that the seal hasn't broken means it'll be fine for years to come.

Pascha · 21/12/2019 19:15

Well, we've made and eaten them and no-ones dead yet. I call that a success.

Given that we are currently eating home made Damson Jam from 2007 with no ill effects, I would think you are on solid ground with a factory produced product!

Craiglang · 21/12/2019 19:55

Mincemeat is absolutely foul Envy < not jealousy. You're unreasonable to use it at all.

My six and three year old love mince pies. As DH and I hate them I buy them especially for them but even the smell makes me feel unwell.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 21/12/2019 19:57

It’s preserved. That is how people used to keep food. It’s in a sealed jar and it’s full of sugar and brandy. Will be fine. I had a Christmas pudding that went out of date in April last week. I’m still here.
