child-hating woman in Tate Modern

I went to the Tate Modern this afternoon with a friend as we had heard they were running special family activities - and they were, and the staff were lovely and very helpful. Between us we had 5 children: two 4 year olds, a 2 year old and 2 babies. We were directed to a room in the gallery where the older children could look at the pictures and make their own collage with stickers all supplied by the gallery. While we were in there (and the older children were quietly getting on with the activity) my friend had to run outside and one of the babies started crying so I went to get out her bottle. In the ensuing few seconds of noise a hateful woman approached me and aggressively told me that 'this is not a kindergarten, this is a gallery - you can't have screaming children in here!" I was incensed but managed to keep my cool and explained that we were here as part of a Tate organised family activity. She kept on and said it should not be allowed so I asked her 'Do you think children should not be allowed to look at art?" and she said no!!! So I said very sarcastically 'What a LOVELY attitude' and proceeded to tell my friend very loudly what had happened. I am still furious!! Anyone else had such a reaction?????

i changed it to under 5s!

Blu · 24/08/2007 23:32

ok- even under 5 - DS has had an articulatable enjoyment of art since he was 3.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 24/08/2007 23:32

Isn't Kerry in Ireland so I'm guessing there isn't any Bookstart there?

expatinscotland · 24/08/2007 23:33

And that something that inspired those artists often did when they were children.

I've never been in a more child-hating place.

How tragic! They don't stay young forever, but they sure do keep their memories for as long as they live.

It's a baby. I don't even hear it anymore.

Bubble99 · 24/08/2007 23:35

Family activities = Noise of children. Everyone knows that. Or perhaps only people who've had/brought up children?

Hi Expat!

southeastastra · 24/08/2007 23:36

if you have an under 5 that can respect the areas they're in all well and good for you.

i know my 6 year old would just jump all over the place and wouldn't appreciate it. people try to push their children into things so early

Kerry are you serious? Of course there are museums in Ireland!

bellawilliams · 24/08/2007 23:36

No - it was the noise I think she was objecting to - although she may have been annoyed at the sight of 5 children in there - even though they were all behaving really well and being supervised. Clearly she was having a bad day. Made me almost wish that the kids would REALLY start playing up and give her something to complain about....

DS is 3.5 and I think he would be more interested in the Tate Modern than the zoo tbh.

FrayedKnot · 24/08/2007 23:38

I think my librarians must be very tolerant, DS has a loud voice and our library is very small

yes but alot of children don't know how to behave in a stately home/gallery environment. i said earlier i meant under 5s

Easywriter · 24/08/2007 23:41

Kerry I can see that you probably didn't mean it as it came out but I don't 'push' my children into anything.

I just expose them.

V. different imo

I'm a scientist and engineer, art (for example) is something I either like or don't, I don't have the ability to articulate why. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy looking at art and neither should my children miss out on this pleasure.

Besides I have enough trouble in 'pushing' my children into eating and sleeping. Life's too short!
