To not pay over £1000 in rent for a studio?

I'm 28 and live 'at home' but pay rent and bills of about 700 for a studio while my parents live further south.

I also pay for the home internet, phone + TV license(i'm the only one watching live TV). Granted it probably takes a bit more to run the flat, I still think the amount I pay is more than generous as they couldn't let it out otherwise.

My dad has just told me he wants to take over all the house bills which he says will raise the total amount to 1200. (This is more than half of my take home.

AIBU to not want to pay that much? (That's what the voting buttons are for) but as an aside AIBU to consider moving out if they insist on my paying? It would leave the flat vacant until my siblings are back from uni. How much should older children pay to live in less than ideal positions until they've saved enough to buy?

Sounds as though you have decided on a course of action. The only way they would be able to stay as and when they want is if it's a holiday let so don't get drawn into running their Airbnb for them as they won't pay you.

There's probably a service charge payable as well as the other bills they're currently covering. I think you can say that you're moving out in order to be able to save for a place of your own and they'll then be able to get market rent, etc from a proper tenant.

Closer to work?

For less money?

It’s a no brainer!

WhereYouLeftIt · 19/12/2019 15:49

Good point about them putting it on Airbnb and expecting OP to run it for them, @wowfudge! They are cheekyfuckerish enough to expect her to do that.

Be ready for it @strivingtosucceed - have your 'regretful decline' all polished and rehearsed and ready to serve up to them when they try that on! I'm sure there are agents out there who could do it for them (and charge substantially).

maggiecate · 19/12/2019 16:41

If you can save £250 a month in a flat share that’s closer to work it’s a no-brainer. That’s £3000 in a year! And less travel AND you won’t be turfed out of your bed for six weeks of the year! Do you end up subbing your siblings food when they’re staying as well?

ecuse · 03/01/2020 20:57

What did you decide, OP?

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 04/01/2020 08:48

Can you get a studio in London for £500? Unless you are renting a room, which I think would be a good option for you OP of you want to save up. I shared a flat for a couple of years as it was a huge saving compared to living on my own. Let us know what your came up with!

JoJoSM2 · 04/01/2020 08:59

In your position, I’d move out to a house share. You’ll be able to save up faster and hopefully buy your own place soon.

ThanosSavedMe · 04/01/2020 09:08

@strivingtosucceed how did the conversation go?

MaybeDoctor · 04/01/2020 10:09

Hmm - I wouldn’t underestimate the benefit of a secure living arrangement, no tenancy, no inspections, no deposit etc. Agents often make money-grabbing their favourite hobby. Flat share arrangements can also become a bit nightmarish at times.

The other problem I foresee is that you get a new place and they would still expect to come and stay with you!

BackOnceAgainWithATinselHalo · 04/01/2020 10:17

Move out! Seriously! I’d rather live in a flat share than that weird ‘build up our equity while we do fuck all’ arrangement. They can get a tenant and learn what side their bread is buttered on.

stouffer · 04/01/2020 10:52

@MaybeDoctor I used to have this issue with my parents, mainly caused by us giving up our comfortable bed when they came to stay (which at one point was pretty much every weekend). We solved it by getting an uncomfortable bastard of a sofa bed and telling them that we’d got it especially so they could stay over; they slept on it once and then declined to stay after that. You’ve got to play the players sometimes.

steakandmantoo
That sounds like a good deal. My DS is looking for something similar, could you Pm me the area?

strivingtosucceed · 06/01/2020 21:20

@ThanosSavedMe in all the Christmas hullaballoo nobody remembered the flat and who was/wasn't paying rent. So i've decided to bury my head in the sand until it inevitably comes up again, aat which point i'll let them know i'm ready to move out.

In the meantime, i'm squirelling away as much as possible towards purchasing my own house. I have about 60% of a decent deposit saved and will be looking to buy mid June-ish. Is it too much to hope no-one brings it up before then Blush ?

Just move out love. You’ll be able to save more than you currently do. Your current place seems like more hassle than it’s worth.
Good luck OP!

ThanosSavedMe · 06/01/2020 22:09

Sounds like a plan! Just save and save as much as you possibly can for as long as possible.

BackOnceAgainWithATinselHalo · 07/01/2020 20:01

Well you’ve lived there long enough, they have to give you notice.
