Boris Watch - Thread 1

Well, it's been done for Trump since he got elected.
No doubt some people will complain it's on AIBU - but it's a place with traffic.

So let's use this to keep an eye on the changes under Boris.

First Thing:

Boris introduces clause in the withdrawal agreement so the UK must leave with WTO rules if there is no trade agreement with the EU by the end of 2020

www.theguardian.com/business/2019/dec/17/pound-slides-to-pre-election-levels-in-wake-of-bid-to-outlaw-brexit-extension

Feel free to comment and add things that you notice changing. The Trump threads are at 97 now.

Great thread , thanks for putting it here for traffic.

As the parent of 2 disabled children I am extremely worried about their future given the changes to criteria for assessment of disabled adults for benefits.

Of course I hope they will be able to work but as children they do not receive access to an appropriate education or mental health services/ other services due to cuts in those services, so their opportunity to contribute as adults have been limited from the outset!

TheGoogleMum · 18/12/2019 11:16

I think allied health professionals shouldn't have tuition fees for their degrees still, but at least it's a step in the right direction. Is it enough to entice people to apply? It's the mature students that want to get into healthcare later in life that are the main ones affected.

What do we think the new Johnson American word for penis Government will do about THE MOST URGENT issue in the world today
Climate Change ?

Saddler · 18/12/2019 12:00

Still crying Op? It's been nearly a week now hope you're better soon

TheMustressMhor · 18/12/2019 12:06

I have a feeling that the Johnson administration will do precisely nothing about the climate emergency.

Saddler - you are woefully missing the point of this thread.

CendrillonSings · 18/12/2019 12:12

'Boris' makes him sound like some cuddly guinea pig beloved by the nation. Let's not forget that people who have worked with Boris Johnson generally have a low opinion of him.

The public disagrees, since they gave Boris the highest share of the popular vote since 1979 Smile

longwayoff · 18/12/2019 12:15

Great idea OP, thank youXmas Smile

ssd · 18/12/2019 12:23

Why do the leave voters here delight in being goady, instead of refuting some of the points made on this thread? How do they feel reading of the intended loss of workers rights or the worry of parents of disabled children?
Just because they might not have these worries, is it OK to dismiss them?

Stinkyeddie · 18/12/2019 12:23

Still gloating?...its been nearly a week. Hope you feel better soon

ssd · 18/12/2019 12:24

Or even worse, to gloat over them?

Stinkyeddie · 18/12/2019 12:24

Yep!

Peregrina · 18/12/2019 12:27

The MP for Henley assured us that he would tackle climate change - to hollow laughter.

What will they do? Almost certainly nothing. However, if they do wreck agriculture, I assume that some land left unfarmed or ungrazed will gradually revert to nature and the trees will start planting themselves, helped along by the wind and the birds.

Jason118 · 18/12/2019 12:29

They will continue to pour scorn on anything fact based. Facts are the enemy of idealism.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 18/12/2019 12:30

Why do the leave voters here delight in being goady, instead of refuting some of the points made on this thread?

Because they're irrefutable.

ChaiNashta · 18/12/2019 12:41

That would be Zac Goldsmith the Islamophobic racist rejected by Londoners being elevated to House of Lords.

The mega rich will always look after their own.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2019 12:42

Few voters, except maybe the Tory / Leave ploppers here, regarded any party leader with enthusiasm

For most, it was a matter of holding their nose and voting for the least horrible option

Let's hope the 3 main parties sort themselves out, choose decent leaders and give voters the chance next GE to vote for a party they can feel enthusiastic about

TheMustressMhor · 18/12/2019 12:59

For most, it was a matter of holding their nose and voting for the least horrible option

Absolutely.

I despair when I see threads of this ilk descend into Playground Soundbites, such as "We Won - Yah!"

Some posters believe that as long as they indulge in GoadShittery, they have made a point.

Actually, they do not appear to understand how to engage in meaningful debate and discourse. It's pitiful.

derxa · 18/12/2019 13:10

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/12/2019 13:11

I wonder how much we will actually see of Johnson. I think he will become the useful puppet of the rest of the Tory government.

lonelyplanetmum · 18/12/2019 13:12

Mr Johnson and the highest share of the popular vote. ?

Yes he proved certainly nearly 14 million votes worth of popular but many did hold their nose and ...

remember that the Johnson choice was not popular with even more.

It was 16,753, 651 million who voted against. So actually more voted against him than in favour.

( On goading- MNetters can keep on goading a week after the election , or in a month or even in a decade's time. However one loan poster goading nearly 17 million isn't really going to go anywhere.)

CendrillonSings · 18/12/2019 13:17

It was 16,753, 651 million who voted against. So actually more voted against him than in favour.

No postwar Government has ever won more than 50% of the vote, and thus by your logic all were illegitimate.

Did you make that argument about all those other Governments too? I suppose that since the Attlee Government was illegitimate then so was their foundation of the NHS, right? After all, more people voted against it than for it!

So as you can see, your point is nonsensical.

lonelyplanetmum · 18/12/2019 13:35

No I'm one of the many people who wants to progress from the antiquated first past the post.

Something is wrong when a government wins a big majority on a minority of the vote surely.

Just go and celebrate with your mates Cendrillion. If anyone else still is enjoying being bad winner a week in. Gloating over 16 million plus is a pointless task.

And once you legally change the voting system via an Act of Parliament, then that new system will be the legal and constitutional norm, just as the current system is now. You can’t just change the constitution in your head and create new realities to suit yourself.

Neither the Conservatives nor Labour stood on a platform of changing the voting system, so even on your logic most voters supported the status quo.

According to this thread you intend to moan about the election result for 5 years, so I’m not sure why you’ve decided others aren’t allowed to express their happiness about it less than a week in Smile

Zoidbergonthehalfshell · 18/12/2019 13:48

However, if they do wreck agriculture, I assume that some land left unfarmed or ungrazed will gradually revert to nature and the trees will start planting themselves, helped along by the wind and the birds.

Well, that might help to offset some of the damage done when he bins all the environmental protection we had under the EU, certainly.

ethelfleda · 18/12/2019 13:52

Nah, we decided what want to hold Johnson to account and see whether he delivers on his promises because he is not a dictator and doesn’t get to do whatever he likes.
