WIBU to pull a sicky tomorrow?

knocknockgryffindor · 15/12/2019 20:53

I'm a teacher in a secondary school, it's the last week of term tomorrow so very close to the holidays.

I'm 25 weeks pregnant, have terrible sciatica bought on by the pregnancy and not helped by charging about after our two year old all day, I'm getting really bad headaches and have one since waking up today. I'm exhausted, achey, and tonight I've had an upset tummy too. I don't think it's anything I've eaten, just feeling run down and exhausted. I've got so much marking to get done for Thursday, im stressing about that, too.

Would it be awful to phone in sick tomorrow, drop DS at childcare, and have a day in bed watching tele and catching up with marking?

I don't know what id say to work, I don't really have a single ailment, just bloody knackered.

If you're experiencing sciatic pain, you're poorly enough to call in sick, IMO. Its blummin horrendous!

MollyButton · 15/12/2019 22:35

Call in sick - ut do go to your GP (especially if you still have a headache/achey) and get yourself checked over.

Mummaofmytribe · 15/12/2019 22:37

If you're getting a lot of headaches you should get your blood pressure checked asap. Can be a sign of pre eclampsia. Hope not! But I'd not only take day off, but also ring midwife

TokenGinger · 15/12/2019 22:38

@TheReluctantCountess

If you ring in sick, don’t say it’s pregnancy related.

Why? In my work place, pregnancy-related absences can not be used for disciplinary action or sickness triggers so she'd be doing herself a favour saying it's pregnancy-related.

Ellie56 · 15/12/2019 22:40

You do not need to "pull a sickie" OP. You sound genuinely ill. I think you should also see your MW as PP said.

And HT will not want you going into school to give everyone else an upset stomach for Christmas!

chuffoff · 15/12/2019 22:42

29 weeks pg here, was also feeling run down and suffering with sciatica. Muddled through last week then had a meltdown midweek due to exhaustion and back pain. Severely reprimanded by consultant and now on bed rest. Didn't listen to my body and pushed it too far. Work (NHS) extremely understanding and is recorded as pregnancy-related medical absence. Look after yourself.

justasking111 · 15/12/2019 22:42

You are unwell. Get the headaches checked out as others said. Sciatica is awful.

WorraLiberty · 15/12/2019 22:45

I hate the phrase 'Pulling a sickie'.

If you wake up in the morning and you're actually too ill/exhausted to go to work, then phone in and tell them.

But at least see how you feel when you wake up.

goingtotown · 15/12/2019 22:45

You don’t have to go into details about your sickness just say that you’re unwell & will hopefully be back to work in a couple of days.

Bowerbird5 · 15/12/2019 22:48

Agree take the day off but also go to the midwife and get your blood pressure and urine checked. It is not worth the risk. I had pre eclampsia with all my pregnancies. I had sciatica too bloody awful.

WhiskersPete · 15/12/2019 22:52

Eh? if you do ring in sick definitely say it's pregnancy related as it doesn't count towards your absence record. You need to look after yourself. I didn't go easy on myself when I was pregnant and regretted it at the end.

Mrscog · 15/12/2019 22:52

Definitely take the day off, you sound exhausted and run down, that’s not pulling a sickie.

Bunbunbunny · 15/12/2019 22:55

Take the day off and get to your drs, headaches are a real concern in pregnancy as quite a few posters have already said. I think you should be calling 111 now for advice and shouldn't be going into work.

chuck7 · 15/12/2019 22:56

If you feel like you really can't go in then don't. Clearly you have a lot on your plate. Personally I'd try to push through to the end of the week.

Sparky888 · 15/12/2019 22:59

It is just a job. Like any other. People will cover, kids will survive. It just feels terrible especially when you’re ill. So if you’re feeling terrible about it, I think you are sick and should stay at home.

Livingtothefull · 15/12/2019 23:02

You must prioritise your health. Take the day off and don't feel guilty, you & your baby come first. Make sure you say it is pregnancy related. And get checked out as others have suggested.

mywrencalls · 15/12/2019 23:10

Absolutely take it off, stay in bed, get cosy and enjoy every minute Smile

BrutusMcDogface · 15/12/2019 23:26

Yes, take the day off! You sound genuinely unwell. Plus I also agree that you should call your mw and have a urine/bp check.

mrssillysausage · 15/12/2019 23:35

You are actually I'll so of course you should call in sick. Hope you feel better soon x

Medievalist · 15/12/2019 23:39

But you are ill so of course you should take tomorrow off. Maybe just focus on a couple of things when you ring in - upset tummy and really bad sciatica?

LemonGingerCakes · 15/12/2019 23:40

If it’s pregnancy related past a certain point, I believe work can enforce maternity leave to start from that day.

schafernaker · 15/12/2019 23:41

15 weeks pregnant, teacher. Had the day off last week after vomiting as know full well Noro is going around. Turns out it was likely just pregnancy related but as I’ve never been sick in either pregnancy and was truly exhausted and barely able to function I think it was a good call. It meant I could sleep all day before the toddler got home and go in and be competent for the rest of the week.

Bowerbird5 · 15/12/2019 23:46

Helpful Lemongingercakes.

When staff have been unable to come in because of pregnancy related symptoms everyone was sympathetic and understanding. I work in Primary OP. Just ring early so they can get cover. Check in with midwife taking marking while you wait if not too heavy. I've done mine in GP, osteo, dentist etc. Then go home have a nap do rest of marking feet up and watch a Christmas Movie. Order take away for supper.

Ilovelucyy · 15/12/2019 23:52

YABU. If you’re ill you don’t need to “pull a sickie”, you need sick leave. If you’re not ill, crack on.

Girlking · 15/12/2019 23:52

You are not pulling a sickie (pretending to be ill) you are ill! Sciatica, stomach bug, headache exhaustion = not well. Definitely take day off, go to GP and get checked over , go to bed and rest. If you feel a bit better after doctors/rest do some marking. You need to listen to your body and if you are not feeling well you won’t be able to do your job to the best of your ability
