To think wraps are shit?

That's not to say I don't like them, I do. I just cannot get to grips with making them. Any decent amount of filling and they don't wrap properly, unroll, fall apart. The ones that cone up on a fanjita kit are tiny, capable of holding 2 slivers of chicken and a cm of lettuce.

Am I going wrong, or aibu to think they are shit?

Oh, I do fold up, food left then fold right, you must keep it tight though.

PrettyShiningPeople · 14/12/2019 18:04

I don’t fanny about trying to pick up & eat a fajita wrap, I just use a knife & fork

Fajita not fanjita Grin

Grumpos · 14/12/2019 18:14

You must be wrapping them wrong! I have done it wrong my whole life until this year when I watched the girl wrap my burrito in a burrito bar and realised what I was doing wrong!

Also, an extra step which I think takes your wrap from nice to AMAZING is to toast it slightly once you’ve got it all wrapped up, just pop it back in the pan / griddle you’ve cooked the fillings in and heat on both “sides” for a minute or two. Game changer and also ‘seals’ the wrap

MulticolourTinselOnTheTree · 14/12/2019 18:15

I don't bother with fajita kits. I make mine from scratch and buy bigger wraps.

I also use wraps in a pannini press, and also make up cold ones with cheese and tuna for work.

I buy large breaded cod and slice them up into a wrap with some salad and mayonnaise or chunky gastro fish fingers.

GrumpyHoonMain · 14/12/2019 18:23

Different wraps for different things.

Fajitas / enchiladas / chimichangas have small wraps because the star of the show is the meat / veg / sauce and so you don’t want to fill up on the wrap itself. Also they are made from corn which is designed to be warmed first otherwise they are rock hard.

The larger wheat wraps you can buy are designed to be eaten cold with salad fillings.

TitsInAbsentia · 14/12/2019 18:27

You can get a lot into your fanjita...it's all about the way you stuff it in Grin

Oswin · 14/12/2019 18:31

Buy the seasoning and wraps separate. Get bigger wraps that way and cheaper than the kit.

Whattodoabout · 14/12/2019 18:36

I think the trick is not to overfill them and some say to use tin foil which helps hold it together (like the KFC twister).

Jayaywhynot · 14/12/2019 18:38

We use pitta, puff them up in the oven then fill with salad and chicken, so much easier than wraps

MoonlightMistletoe · 14/12/2019 18:40

@Jayaywhynot Thankyou!!

LucaFritz · 14/12/2019 18:40

Are you heating them before using ? Your supposed to microwave them sprinkled with a bit of water before using so there soft and stretchy they'd be dry and hard to fold straight from the bag

BlackSwanGreen · 14/12/2019 18:41

Agree re not buying the kit and getting the bigger size wraps. DH does the folding thing, I don't bother so the sauce spills out onto my plate. It doesn't unwrap itself though.... are you making the mistake of putting it down between bites? Hmm Smile

Dagnabit · 14/12/2019 18:51

It always gets messy when I try to wrap my fanjita...

My husband makes amazing wraps, I am crap at making them, it is us and not the wraps op 😊

Itsabeautifuldaytosavelives123 · 14/12/2019 19:03

Place food in a line from middle to the top of the wrap, fold the bottom up to almost the top, then fold left and right sides in. Very secure, never lose any food. Also, don't get the tiny wraps, they don't hold enough.

Sparrowlegs248 · 14/12/2019 19:06

@TheHootiestChristmasOwl but that makes no sense, the smaller the wrap the less you get in it. With the small fajita kit wraps I can't get any decent amount if filling in them.

you need to wrap then tightly so that they don't fall apart. But tbh all wraps taste like rubber. I am sure fresh ones would taste better. Khubz is the best but it's hard to find it.

Deborah69 · 14/12/2019 19:06

i stopped making wraps in 1966. havent made a bloody thing yet

EvaHarknessRose · 14/12/2019 19:07

I'm trialling folding over a very slim fold on both sides and then rolling from bottom to top. Seems to work well for burritos.

Sparrowlegs248 · 14/12/2019 19:08

@TitsInAbsentia Grin I can't believe I did that.

Maybe check out a youtube video.

Rather unusually, I had a duck wrap from Waitrose last week and I was thinking how amazing wraps are. The flour tortillas are just so decadent and perfect.
