Last night we went to a 50th birthday party. There was one of those picture boards of the birthday girl with lots of childhood pics along with snaps of fun times with friends, neighbours and family etc..
I think everyone at the party featured - some of the pics were great.
Imagine my surprise when one of the pics, taken in our ndn’s garden, last summer had all our garden furniture, bbq, patio heater etc in it.
It was taken at a do they had - we were invited but couldn’t attend as we were on holiday.
We always leave a front door key and alarm code with ndn (who are also good friends) just in case there is a problem.
Some of the items they ‘borrowed’ were in our garage. The only way to get in the garage (unless you have a key, which they didn’t) is to go in through the front door, unset the alarm and got through the internal door to the garage.
It transpires that they ‘didn’t think we’d mind’ and let themselves in and borrowed what they wanted. They then put it all back and didn’t say a word.
If they had asked, I really wouldn’t have minded but AIBU to feel pissed off and annoyed at their cheek?! I’m really pissed off! DH thinks I’m overreacting...

The other neighbours probably didn’t mention it as they assumed they’d asked you. It’s outrageously cheeky but I agree, it’s a fab story to tell others over how they were found out!!

cstaff · 14/12/2019 19:21

I just can't believe they had the gall to put up these photos with your furniture in the background and thought nothing of it. That to me is absolutely hilarious Grin. They have no shame.

carly2803 · 14/12/2019 19:24

um wow thats ultimately cheekyness!!

cheeky fuckers!

ChikiTIKI · 14/12/2019 19:31

When we were young teens/pre teens, my sisters friend "Tom" came back from holiday to find the neighbour kid had broken their arm. Their neighbours story about how they broke it was inconsistent and confusing. Tom and his parents then realised via several clues in the garden that the neighbour must have broken it on Tom's trampoline while they were away on holiday!

ChikiTIKI · 14/12/2019 19:31

I would have been shocked too. Your neighbours are rude.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 14/12/2019 19:33

Did they know what was in your garage before you went away, or have they been searching your house for stuff to borrow?

I8toys · 14/12/2019 19:36

Out of order. They should have asked not assumed. Get your key back asap. What else have they gone through?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 14/12/2019 19:38

'Temporary theft' Grin don't be daft Grin

HeronLanyon · 14/12/2019 19:44

Theft has to have intention to permanently deprive and dishonesty. Think neither present !
Burglary needs trespass and then eg theft.
That’s why I think it’s simple trespass, possibly criminal damage if any scuffing, possibly a form of obtaining by deception.
No matter what it’s 100 unacceptable !

Isabellaandbay · 14/12/2019 19:45

Leaving a key is for feeding the hamster or an emergency! Not for borrowing garden furniture! What else, did party guests use your loo because the host’s had a queue? Wine glasses? Spare pillows for guests? If they took an inch they might have taken a mile!

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 14/12/2019 20:30

Wasn't there was a thread on here were the OPs garden furniture, bbq, outside toys all were stolen by a next door neighbour after a storm blew down their fence between them. They'd nicked it all, put the fence back up and told the OP the wind must have blown it all into their garden Hmm

DrManhattan · 14/12/2019 20:33

Bet they have been through all your drawers....

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 14/12/2019 20:34

I agree cstaff, they went to all the effort of being sneaky but then plastered the pictures up for the OP to see. Numpties 😂

dudsville · 14/12/2019 20:41

Firstly, I'm glad you clearly spoke with them at the time. Too many posts asking ways when the ideal moment for doing that thing passed.

My OH would let this go. I would joje about changing the lock and code, and then really do it. They aren't to be trusted.

EL8888 · 14/12/2019 20:47

Super cheeky. Surely if they didn’t think you would mind, then they would have asked you?! Another vote for changing your alarm code and have some discreet cameras when you next go away

Janaih · 14/12/2019 20:53

Omg snakey neighbours! Your only option really is just to move house.

EC22 · 14/12/2019 20:55

Cheeky but funny!

TreeSwayer · 14/12/2019 20:55

How do you know that some guests didn't avail themselves of your beds for the night? Use your towels etc? I wouldn't trust them again unless you install cameras inside your house when you go on holiday. (Ring do good ones)

It is in classics but this thread in will horrify www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/a1735637-Have-you-ever-encountered-anyone-this-cheeky

The best one if you haven't got time is by WeAreEternal do a search in the thread, she posted at Sat 20-Apr-13 14:52:07. Eye-opener shocker. Grin

looselegs · 14/12/2019 21:04

I work as a childminder, so have lots of garden toys. Found out one summer that whilst we were away on holiday, my ndn had a big bbq, and removed one of the fence panels between our gardens so the kids could use the toys!!

HeronLanyon · 14/12/2019 21:05

Good god ! Introducing the young to criminality at a young age. Unbelievable.

BloggersBlog · 14/12/2019 21:06

@looselegs Shock !!!! Did you confront them??

chicken853 · 14/12/2019 21:06

I would be absolutely furious!!!! Cheeky shits!

MerryDeath · 14/12/2019 21:13

🤣 that's absolutely mental behaviour.

i wonder whether they would have asked had you been attending the party?!

Janaih · 14/12/2019 21:16

If this doesn't get picked up by the daily mail or the s*n I'll eat my hat.

EggysMom · 14/12/2019 21:18

Before we go on holiday in the summer, we have to remove the basket from our son's swing and the seat from our swing seat. We've had neighbouring kids ask over the fence whether they can play on them when we are there (nope!) and they would definitely climb the fence once they realise we've gone away.
