Couple outraged they are paying more in Waitrose than Aldi

Couple are either outraged, upset or disappointed -depending on which link you read -but do people generally not know that food suppliers/processors/factories make the same food for different supermarkets?

YABU-I did not know this

Aldi filled pasta is tasteless- Waitrose and Tesco’s are fine.

Dontdisturbmenow · 13/12/2019 16:32

Hummus definitely doesn't taste all the same. I really don't like Tesco's, best is Asda, Waitrose not bad.

saraclara · 13/12/2019 16:33

The whole 'same factory' logic makes me laugh. All my meals are created in the same kitchen, but some of them are a bit rubbish and some of them are great!

What's the same building got to do with anything?

msmith501 · 13/12/2019 16:35

Years aGo I worked in a well known pork pie factory in Melton Mowbray... we actually did have either different ranges / quality of pies for different supermarkets OR (and more often) the newest pies went to Waitrose / booths and the oldest in terms of sell by dates went to cheaper outlets.

soupforbrains · 13/12/2019 16:35

Not sure if it's the same now but ASDA Smart Price Lager was Carling. same factory same product, differently branded cans.

aprilanne · 13/12/2019 16:38

I worked for an m s food factory Scotland and only packed m and s .Christ 70 percent veg went to pigs not right shape length when cut that sort of nonsense .No wonder there veg so dear there quality control mental .you change apron gauntlets gloves every veg supposing you pack 3 boxes or 3000 and when they saying free they not kidding factories about half mile apart even paper work not allowed between factories
So yes you get what you pay for

Saucery · 13/12/2019 16:49

I worked as a student in a couple of food factories. Different ingredients for M&S, more frequent quality control/hygiene checks than for other lines.

Elvesdontdomagic · 13/12/2019 16:51

Pointless argument. Quality is different in different supermarkets.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/12/2019 17:26

Quality might be different for meat or processed food but a tray of chopped up peppers and onions is going to be pretty much the same wherever you buy it from, so I'd just get something like that from Aldi for less money.

user1497207191 · 13/12/2019 17:33

Having worked in a factory that made ready meals and sandwiches for the supermarkets, I can categorically state that different quality ingredients ARE used for different supermarkets. We had various "grades" of chicken, mayonnaise, bread, etc for different supermarkets. We used frozen chicken pieces for cheaper brands, such as for petrol stations, and fresh chicken for the premium brands. It was FAR MORE than just different stickers - the whole production line would stop, ingredients removed from the dispensers/containers, and refilled with a different grade before the production line would start again. So, yes, same factory, but VERY different ingredient qualities.

user1497207191 · 13/12/2019 17:34

but a tray of chopped up peppers and onions is going to be pretty much the same wherever you buy it from

No, you have the difference between using frozen imports or fresh. You have the difference between normally grown and organic.

CatInTheDaytime · 13/12/2019 17:39

This is a Marks and Spencer quilted jacket potato

I honestly wouldn't put that past them. I bet there's an M&S person somewhere noting that down to take to an ideas meeting.

Barnseyboyo · 13/12/2019 17:41

It’s not the same ingredients. I’ve worked in the industry and thought they make them in the same factory, it’s really quite different products.

StealthPolarBear · 13/12/2019 17:43

I agree hummus isn't all the same. Coop is chunky and garlic ey, tesco is smoother and with less taste.

AllergicToAMop · 13/12/2019 17:45

It's not the same consistency. But it's the same chickpeas and tahini based on reasoning behind the recall

Eve · 13/12/2019 17:46

@toodlethenoodle

I worked for them as a student many years ago 😁

Idratherbeonquora · 13/12/2019 17:47

My mil once said she tried the chicken from aldi but it was too dry so she'll buy superior meat from now on. You overcooked it, love. I wish i still spoke to her because i'd love to send her this right now! Xmas WinkCrown Grin

Alsohuman · 13/12/2019 17:51

I swear Aldi’s Jo Malone knock offs are exactly the same, even the packaging is identical. The only difference seems to be the price - £10 for a three wick candle instead of £100+.

StealthPolarBear · 13/12/2019 17:54

But if nigella and I both make chicken curry from the same chicken whose would you rather eat?
"it's the same chickpeas" is a very simplistic argument.

BloodyCats · 13/12/2019 17:55

No way is Aldi chicken the same as M&S chicken. It tastes and looks totally different!

wellthatwasthat · 13/12/2019 18:00

A carrot is a carrot. I don't care whether all the carrots in a bag are the same size and shape or whether they are all different sizes and funny shapes. Same product, same farmer, same field. Different price.

We usually shop in Aldi. There's a Waitrose round the corner from where I work, and on the rare occasion I go in there, I am usually to be found walking round with my mouth open in shock at the difference in price.

kateandme · 13/12/2019 18:09

its not the same for all thing.like pies or caseroles and such things do get made at the same factorybut the aldi lamb will be from the neck lets say.or the chicken will be less percentage for the whle meal.or the pies will be made with butter and cream over powdered milk and margarine.the sausags will have more crumb than meat etc.

PlumsGalore · 13/12/2019 18:14

The same company may make Aldi and original Hoola Hoops but they sure as hell do not taste the same. I know because I bought both brands over the last two weeks and the Aldi ones were smaller, dryer and had less flavouring on them.

Lovemusic33 · 13/12/2019 18:15

I did my first big shop in Aldi yesterday (we have only just got a Aldi store), I filled the trolly up and was petrified at what the cost maybe. It came to £59, I get half the amount of food for that price in Tesco, probably a lot less in Waitrose. So far all the food has been really good, only down side has been the use by dates, some only had a couple days on them so had to plan carefully for meals as most of it would be out of date by Tuesday.

I have also worked in a factory that made products for several supermarkets (just different packaging), the recipe for the products were exactly the same for M&S, Sainsbury’s and Tesco.

Aridane · 13/12/2019 18:15

Ha - this is bringing back memories of picking melons in Israel and like fuck was it the same picking for M&S as for other supermarkets.

Hated picking for M&S as we had to assess the bloody melons before picking for percentage ripeness whereas for all others we just got on and picked the melons
