To think that Steve Coogan (and similar celebs) handed the Tories another 2% of the vote?

I think there has been WAY too much of this. We need to foster a society where insulting people who disagree with us isn't acceptable. Especially when those we are insulting are the working classes.

If we carry on allowing this kind of 'discussion' we will never get an enlightened government and a fairer society.

AIBU?

Heh. Just me then?

No, I agree. People don't like to be patronised like that. It's like telling teenagers not to do things!!

DeeZastris · 12/12/2019 23:48

I don’t think celebrity endorsements are helpful really. I like Coogan as a comedian but he knows no more about politics than anyone else.

It would be nice if politics became more respectful but judging by the mud slinging that’s already started I don’t think it’s going to happen. I’m starting to think social media is a curse, an addictive curse.

ChristaMSieland · 12/12/2019 23:52

Yes, I like his comedy too, which just makes his comments all the more diappointing.

You'd think by now people would have realised the blowback that comes from talking down to the electorate. But, no. Maybe now the realisation will dawn.

I'd love to hear the reasons the 'YABU' voters are voting that way (if it's polite Smile ).

I wish political parties would say “actually what would really help is if you shut up”.

Nanny0gg · 13/12/2019 00:01

Calling Conservative voters 'stupid' is not the best way to win them over.

One day they'll learn...

SnorkMaiden81 · 13/12/2019 00:01

Honestly I think comedians should stick to comedy, that's what the nation loves them for.

That said, on a purely voyueristic level I'd love to see Ricky Tomlinson losing his shit around now....Jim Royle style. My arse!!!

DeeZastris · 13/12/2019 00:03

Can anyone forget Eddie Izzard making a total arse of himself on Question Time over the European referendum? I’m a remain voter and I was mortified.

ChristaMSieland · 13/12/2019 00:06

I wish political parties would say “actually what would really help is if you shut up”.

Wouldn't be great if all political parties agreed to do just that?

I think the huge barrage of Labour supporting posts, both from celebrities and "normal" folk over the last week has been counter productive. Too much Tories are evil, Tories are stupid, etc and a lack of true discussion and persuasion

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/12/2019 00:11

I joined in the early days Open Britain and now receive a number emails from Peoples Vote (even though I have changed my point of view)

I constantly get emails from actors - i might be interested in who they voted for just in a being nosey way but I want to hear from those who are very much involved in politics and MP with a real in-depth message and I don’t get this no wonder we are about to leave

DeeZastris · 13/12/2019 00:12

I don’t think insulting people ever made anyone ever change their minds. much more likely to just dig their heals in.

ChristaMSieland · 13/12/2019 00:24

@Nanny0gg @DeeZastris Exactly. It's not rocket science is it? Why do they not see it?

I'm going to look for a clip of Eddie Izzard on QT. I just remember ranting and the raspberry beret.

He was just completely over bearing and talked over everyone. Just awful.

AnalUnicorn · 13/12/2019 01:20

Totally agree. We should be able to have different political opinions without it becoming a slanging match. A Tory voter should be able to have a conversation with a Labour voter without either accusing the other of being a NHS-hater / capitalism-hater (delete as appropriate) or whatever.

What happened to a simple difference of opinion ?

Painedpleasure · 13/12/2019 01:25

I don't believe celebrities should be allowed to endorse political parties. People should be able to vote for who they want without being influenced or insulted. It's similar to celebs and influencers having to declare an AD. Many of these celebrities somehow benefit from declaring their affiliations through monetary benefit or other.

MidnightCircus · 13/12/2019 01:40

Yep, that's the attitude that's causing a lot/most of the problems. Who wants to vote for a party that calls people uneducated, racist, lying, scum, vile, uncaring, selfish etc, just because someone does not agree that party is the best to run the country? The superior, sanctimonious attitude, coupled with the outright rudeness and aggression is what caused Labour so many losses. The way some talk about Tory voters, you'd honestly think they were some sort of non-human seperate species with views totally incompatible with Labour voters. Which is completely wrong, but insulting those who dont share your opinion works so much better Hmm

MidnightCircus · 13/12/2019 01:41

Separate, clearly can't spell at this time of night

ChristaMSieland · 13/12/2019 10:53

Another round of it this morning. (Lily Allen should have learnt after she misunderstood how the Grenfell fire casualties were being counted and made a fool of herself alleging a conspiracy, on what was already a tragic day.)

YABU - we all know the reason this election was a disaster for the Labour party and 'Steve Coogan' is not the name that comes to mind!

ChristaMSieland · 13/12/2019 11:23

Oh believe me @Goldenbear , I'm not trying to let Corbyn off the hook. I am a Labourite but hated Corbyn.

I just mean that 'help' from celebs like Coogan is never any actual help. Especially if it involves explicitly insulting the electorate.

Five million people follow Lily Allen on Twitter? Such a bizarre world we live in. Confused

MistyCloud · 13/12/2019 16:04

YANBU.

PhilSwagielka · 13/12/2019 16:06

Tbf plenty of famous people voted Conservative as well, or slagged Corbyn off.

Celebrities don't affect my vote in any way.
