To think that someone must be voting Tory

Hi, I know very very few People who admit to voting Tory. I’m from Scotland and from a working class background but do work in finance and have many middle class friends. But only two people I know have admitted voting Tory (and both are from England)

But clearly, someone is voting them in. Can I ask, why do people vote Tory? I just want to understand from the other side

I also read the manifestos and many of the policies under Labour would drive my partners small business under. He employs 10 people but he would struggle to make it work if all their promises were implemented. We had done the maths and decided he would have to close down if Labour got into power and that puts 10 people out of work.

I did a lot of research for this election which is strange as I am a thick and smug Tory.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 12/12/2019 23:46

PS - you only need look at the other threads where Tory voters are called scum and cu*ts to see why they may keep opinions private.

Straightrhymes · 12/12/2019 23:48

"That is the attitude that turns me off voting Labour"

How the fuck could a voter put you off a party? Are you conflating the two? Confused

londonrach · 12/12/2019 23:49

Not surprised...mn the only place i saw people wanting to vote labour, in rl everyone voting tory due to jc fear and tbh fear of what labour did last time they were in. Personally i voted for lenny the cat!

Mymycherrypie · 12/12/2019 23:51

My friend votes Tory because she hates foreigners getting Council houses. She also has a council house which is perfectly nice and adequate but wants a bigger one.

She has no realisation that a Tory government would say to her - you’ve got a job, you want a bigger house, buy one yourself then. She thinks she’s hard done by because someone with a larger family/greater need has something she doesn’t.

What I don’t get... people saying they want to keep JC out, he’s frightening etc but they haven’t said WHY. It’s literally regurgitating the same lines. Investing in schools, NHS, abolishing tuition fees. I honestly can’t see why anyone wouldn’t vote for him. I know I’ll get slated but I honestly think there’s a degree of racism when BJ has been put back in power

Seriously? Have I missed something? Is JC black now? Have you noticed how many Jews have had to leave the Labour Party because of his hatred? Have you noticed how Dianne abbott has been hidden away for months in case she embarrasses him and the party (again)?

He is a dreamer and a communist and the results should get you thinking, calm down, and think.

StrangeLookingParasite · 13/12/2019 00:00

I voted Tory because I believe they are the best party to run the country.

Words fail me. You think that lying oaf can actually run anything?

Not to mention page 48 of their manifesto which details their plans to take government above all scrutiny.

BinkySodPlop · 13/12/2019 00:08

Because the Labour party, with its current leadership and backers (Momentum) are unelectable. I suspect the reason that so few Conservative voters admit it is the rabid, vicious reaction we get from some Labour supporters. I could not vote for a party which thinks that having JC as its leader was a good idea - it makes me think that they are delusional and would not run the country well. I would love to have a viable alternative to the current lot, but it's not there. It feels like they're waiting for the Conservatives to fuck up Brexit (which will happen, because, well, it's Brexit!), then come back in 5 years with a new team and have another go. Ultimately, politics is about personalities at this level, and to be considered worse than BJ is pretty bad......

Chloemol · 13/12/2019 00:12

Because I don’t want JC in power

Pinkbonbon · 13/12/2019 00:14

Don't know anyone in Scotland that has ever admitted to voting Tory.

But to those who think a tory gov means less chance of another Scottish referendum, i think you are mistaken. Because a government in england so polar opposite to what the Scots want, will increase support for another ref. And rightly so. All other politics aside, if you are cool with bj being pm, you need your head examined.

Natsel84 · 13/12/2019 00:25

Lesser of 2 evils
Bj or JC
🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

BlackCatSleeping · 13/12/2019 00:30

I actually really like Corbyn. He’s my kind of man, but I agree that his character has been assassinated beyond redemption.

I guess Brexit is a certainty now. Once it’s over, hopefully things can change for the better.

malificent7 · 13/12/2019 05:15

People who wanted labour but voted Tory? I am speechless!!! Whhhhhhhhhhhhhy? Confused

Marleyisme · 13/12/2019 05:38

The reason the tories won is because the labour party members voted to keep Jeremey Corbyn. Everyone else, including labour members, knew he was unelectable.

But still they voted for him to stay.

Labour definitely lost this rather than the tories won.

Marleyisme · 13/12/2019 05:46

And fuck knows what the lib dems were thinking. JS, again, obviously unpopular.

As a professional working mum, her party politic broadcast just proved that strapping your baby on you and turning up at a conference doesnt mean you have a clue what its like for working mothers.

Her and the whoever she chose to do the broadcast are so out of touch.

Oohaye · 13/12/2019 06:11

Labour voters are the most vicious hateful people I have ever met. They are a disgrace and the posters on here are confirming my view.

MereDintofPandiculation · 13/12/2019 06:19

I think Corbyn had some nice ideas, and some frankly terrifying ones. I don’t believe enough of the nice ones would have materialised, and I do believe that some of the scary ones would. Which were the scary ones?

WellErrr · 13/12/2019 06:46

Which were the scary ones?

Compulsory purchase of empty houses.
Abolishing private schools.
Nationalising everything (or trying to).
Another referendum on Brexit (thinking he could just go to the EU and get a credible deal in 3 months...).
Inheritance tax.
All the other tax hikes.

And just the undertone of overpowering hatred for capitalism, and wanting to punish working people. Which their policies would have done.

Kittygirl47 · 13/12/2019 06:53

Hahahaha.

I’ve kept silent on social media while the momentum trolls have been frothing but when one addressed all Tory voters via a meme as cunts yesterday I went after her asking her why I donated £500 to a fund that personally benefited her makes me a cunt? Even without that how dare she?

Cue tears, removal of post and actually thinking without believing Labour bullshit.

AuntieStella · 13/12/2019 06:54

Tories came second across Scotland in 2015 (haven't checked 2017)

Thinking there is no support there is not the complete picture.

SNP took votes from Labour (who reached zenith with Gordon Brown) not the Tories. SNP rhetoric needs to be recognised as rhetoric.

Tories are really not 'other' - it's a mainstream view. And why tactical voting for SNP was needed (and I've seen at least one post on MN where poster says she did that). Which might mean that actual support for a new independence referendum is not everything it seems.

But if there were to be one, when should it be held? Can't work out what wouid be good timing now

Elodie2019 · 13/12/2019 06:57

Because they've sold their soul for Brexit.

StatisticallyChallenged · 13/12/2019 06:58

The thing is plenty of Scots do vote Tory. Not seen the aggregate percentages for this election yet and expect it to be down but last time it was nearly 30%. But rather like with indyref no voters...

  • they tend to be older
  • less likely to be heavy social media users
  • generally just quieter about their politics
  • don't want to deal with the abuse from cybernats or momentum bots.

With those voting proportions and working in finance you almost certainly do know Tory voters...they're just not telling you.

Sipperskipper · 13/12/2019 07:04

My parents (working class, south east England) voted Tory. All Brexit related. It’s all they care about.

StatisticallyChallenged · 13/12/2019 07:05

Right after i posted the vote share was released - 25% tory in Scotland

millimollimandi · 13/12/2019 07:05

It would be interesting to see the demographic of Tory voters - because older people remember the days of nationalisation, and it wasn't good! (I'm not THAT old, but still remember) Also most voters are not ignorant - they can do the maths and Labour spending being funded purely by taxing the (relatively) few high earners paying a little more tax was always pie-in-the-sky.
