To think that someone must be voting Tory

Hi, I know very very few People who admit to voting Tory. I’m from Scotland and from a working class background but do work in finance and have many middle class friends. But only two people I know have admitted voting Tory (and both are from England)

But clearly, someone is voting them in. Can I ask, why do people vote Tory? I just want to understand from the other side

A large swathe of long-term Conservative voters are not social media users.
As the dominant party, Conservative voters don't need to shout out and appeal for tactical voting.
Political nastiness and getting personal about Conservative voters hardly encourages Conservative voters to speak up about their intentions.
In an election with Brexit being the dominant issue, Conservative is the reliable Leave option and not being addressed decisively by Labour.

I haven't voted Conservative but it's not that hard to understand.

@1stmonkey. Thanks for explaining

I didn't vote for them but

There is a massive age split - old people are far more likely to vote conservative. They also turn out far more, and our aging society means they have clout. They are not on Twitter or Mumsnet or Facebook.

Why would they admit to it when it just means they get abuse. Really, Labour activists online are so unattractive, shouty and rude. This doesn't get people to change their vote, it just stood them engaging with your arguments full stop. I really hope at some point our national dialogue improves.

VanessaShanessaJenkins · 12/12/2019 23:15

I did multiple surveys and they all came out showing that the policies I agreed with most were conservative. That made me decision this time round.

supercee · 12/12/2019 23:15

I'm in Scotland and I literally know no-one who votes Tory. I honestly don't understand how anyone who considers themselves a decent person could.

Despairing of Corbyn (he has to go) as a leader surely isn't a good enough reason to resign the most vulnerable members of society to a lifetime of misery along with fucking over public sector workers. I don't get it.

But we live in a democracy. Sigh.

rhubarbcrumbles · 12/12/2019 23:16

yeah, plenty of tossers out there who do. Fuck the lot of them.

MintChocAddict · 12/12/2019 23:17

Scottish here too. I loathe the current Tory party. I had 3 other major parties to choose from up here in my vote against them. I'm not usually an SNP voter, but voted tactically to unseat a sitting Tory.

People in England who outnumber us 10:1 only really had two major parties to vote for aside from the Tories. Clearly JC and JS weren't as viable enough an alternative as the SNP were up here.

That, and the very sad fact that looking after number 1 appears to be a very popular choice for people.

BlackCatSleeping · 12/12/2019 23:19

Huh? Did you miss the Tony Blair and Gordon Brown years? Has it really been that long?

Apparently Labour had huge losses in Leave areas. The sad fact is that a lot of people do just want to get Brexit done.

Illeana · 12/12/2019 23:19

Every single post I’ve seen on social media in the last few weeks has been supporting Labour and criticising anyone who might vote differently. I haven’t seen a single post from anyone who’s voted Tory. They’re obviously in the majority but are keeping it quiet because the Labour voters are so vicious and vocal.

NameChangeNugget · 12/12/2019 23:20

People were voting against a communist crank.

If the party was lead by David Miliband or Keir Starmer, Labour would have pissed this election from a great height

NextdoorNeighbourIsATwat · 12/12/2019 23:21

Some Labour voters are so vitriolic that Tories stay quiet. Simple really.

This is also part of the reason why people have turned of Labour en-masse. The attitude from the top and throughout the support base.

LochJessMonster · 12/12/2019 23:22

I voted Tory because I want to leave the EU and I think we need to tighten our borders, an Australian style points immigration system perhaps.

I also don’t think raising taxes for the wealthy and businesses is going to solve anything, it’s going to drive them to register abroad (a la Lewis Hamilton).

Throwing billions of pounds at the NHS isn’t going to solve it, people abusing the system is what is causing it’s problems.

TheDarkPassenger · 12/12/2019 23:27

I voted Tory, I agree with a pp in that I believe they are the best party to run the country and I don’t want loads of national debt for when my kids are older.

I don’t talk to people about it because loads of labour people on my Facebook are so fucking vile and I cannot be arsed with that shit! I voted as is within my right, not to be called an idiot or retard by the dickheads on Facebook! I’ve actually barely been on there because I’ve seen sides to people I realllllly didn’t wanna see!

Rosehip345 · 12/12/2019 23:28

I think Corbyn had some nice ideas, and some frankly terrifying ones. I don’t believe enough of the nice ones would have materialised, and I do believe that some of the scary ones would.

I’ve not voted Tory this time, but this is the reason I absolutely would not have voted Labour. I’m a remainer however and so couldn’t bring myself to vote Tory.

Straightrhymes · 12/12/2019 23:28

"labour's intention to scrap prison sentences under 6 months in length was frankly ludicrous."

No, it was based on evidence concerning the ineffectiveness of short sentences, and it was supported by criminal justice academics up and down the country. Clearly you know better though - typical thick and smug tory voter.

breakfastpizza · 12/12/2019 23:28

A very good friend came from nothing, and managed to claw her way to modest middle class. She is currently unemployed, struggling on benefits due to health issues, complaining about the lack of support - and she voted Conservative as per usual today. Despite her benefits being cut and not having enough to live on, she'd rather suffer than let anyone else get ahead without working as hard as she did.

rhubarbcrumbles · 12/12/2019 23:33

They’re obviously in the majority but are keeping it quiet because the Labour voters are so vicious and vocal.

No, they are keeping quiet because they are ashamed of being 'I'm alright Jack' voters.

Wtfdoipick · 12/12/2019 23:33

typical thick and smug tory voter.

That is the attitude that turns me off voting Labour. This election was the hardest one to decide on ever

Northernsoullover · 12/12/2019 23:34

For me it was the endless promises Corbyn made. Completely unfeasible. I didn't vote Tory either. I have done in the past but not in the last (including this one) two. I would have voted for lib dems but Y'know.. Swinson. I ended up voting Plaid. Chickened out of spoiling my ballot paper. I don't know why. I know its not illegal.

AnxiousandExcited · 12/12/2019 23:37

I voted Tory though I do rely on some benefits to survive, and very much appreciate the NHS. I'm definitely working class.
But as a businesswoman, the Labour sums just don't add up. I would love tons of free stuff, but the money has to come from somewhere. I don't particularly like Johnson or the Tories, but they do seem to have more business sense.
If our free systems (NHS, DWP, etc etc) don't get an upgrade from someone with business sense soon, then all the money in the world won't save them. There's a hole in the bucket at the moment - it might not be nice to have to stop and patch it up, but it needs doing, and not by pouring more money in.
I'm not sure the Tories will do it, but Labour sure won't.

Aswad · 12/12/2019 23:40

What I don’t get... people saying they want to keep JC out, he’s frightening etc but they haven’t said WHY. It’s literally regurgitating the same lines. Investing in schools, NHS, abolishing tuition fees. I honestly can’t see why anyone wouldn’t vote for him. I know I’ll get slated but I honestly think there’s a degree of racism when BJ has been put back in power.

MrsToothyBitch · 12/12/2019 23:42

I know far more out loud lab & libs than I do out loud tories. I'm 29 so it might be generational and my social media reflects that age demographic.

I don't broadcast my politics but I am a conservative voter & people do often correctly call it. But I know people "just like me" who vote labour.

SwampOfDeath · 12/12/2019 23:43

Well, clearly someone is. I don't know anyone who would own up to it though, anymore than admitting to booking a long haul leisure flight, same kind of in-it-for-themselves MO.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 12/12/2019 23:44

As a Bojo voter tonight, despite not liking him, ill wait you my picture:
I wanted to remain in EU.
I live in London.
I am from a working class background.
I am financially comfortable,
I voted Tory.
I am sad to leave EU.
I would 100% have voted Labour with any other leader, mine was 100% anti JC vote as I think he is a dangerous and deluded man.

1stmonkey · 12/12/2019 23:44

typical thick and smug tory voter

This time, yes, i was a tory voter but I'm not smug about it at all. I would much rather have voted labour and would have done if i thought it was the right thing to do. I educated myself and made a decision. Rather than listening to the endless bleating of self-righteous bullies.
