Like posters for kfc etc

OP posts:
Geminijes · 11/12/2019 15:37

Why?

WellErrr · 11/12/2019 15:37

Why?

Because society is getting so fat.

YANBU. Advertising influences us more than we think.

MsChnandlerBong · 11/12/2019 15:37

No, absolutely not. I absolutely object to the nanny state. No, No and thrice no!

Lardlizard · 11/12/2019 15:39

It seems to have worked well in banning advertising on cigarettes

OP posts:
thenightfury · 11/12/2019 15:42

Banning advertising on cigarettes wasn't what worked. It was increasing the price so they're completely unaffordable for most average people.

thenightfury · 11/12/2019 15:42

Not saying that's a bad thing by the way! Just saying.

gamerchick · 11/12/2019 15:44

Trust me, it's the price. Have you seen the cost of those things now?!

bookmum08 · 11/12/2019 15:48

But who will decide what is 'junk food'. If kfc is 'junk' is Subway (ie a sandwich)? Is pizza 'junk'? AllAll advertising at the moment for all that Christmas food - should we ban that? What about alcohol ads? Cars are dangerous - ban ads for them?

AllergicToAMop · 11/12/2019 15:49

It's the price with cigarettes.

What would you put into the ban class? Everything except lettuce? Because Maccies big mac has less calories than number of bella italia salads... Would it include chocolate? Any sweets? Cheeses? Supermarket's party food?

heartsonacake · 11/12/2019 15:50

YABU. People have personal responsibility. Everything in moderation.

We shouldn’t have to hide advertisements or push up the price of things like KFC, sweets, chocolate, soft drinks etc. because some people cannot control their eating habits.

Sirzy · 11/12/2019 15:51

What classes as junk food?

I don’t think teaching children that some things are bad and some are good when it comes to food helps. It’s much better for them to learn about moderation rather than making some foods into “forbidden fruits”

There is nothing at all wrong with the odd KFC in a balanced diet.

speakout · 11/12/2019 15:52

I disagree OP.

Who is to say whet is junk food?

High fat and salty food perhaps? So ban adverts for camembert or olives?

Mrsjayy · 11/12/2019 15:55

Kfc etc are food outlets which rely on advertising the reasons people eatfast food are their own surely the reason people are fat is their responsibility ?

speakout · 11/12/2019 16:01

I like KFC.

Not relevant I know.

malmi · 11/12/2019 16:13

Of course banning the adverts helped reduce smoking. Why else would the tobacco companies have objected to it and tried to lobby to be allowed to continue? If advertising made no difference they'd have been happy to save the expenditure. The marketing people know how important brand awareness is in generating SALES.

andpancakesforbreakfast · 11/12/2019 16:14

That wouldn't make any difference anyway, it's the wrong approach.

Look at all the ridiculous threads where posters fall over themselves to show how witty they are and need to eat ridiculous portions of food every 2 hours, and the even more ridiculous "fat shaming" expression to disagree with any common sense point related to weight.

We need over-eating and bad food to become unfashionable, not by banning adverts. celebs are skinny, but it has no effect on the street, we need to reverse the trend.

Zaphodsotherhead · 11/12/2019 16:16

I work in a shop and complain regularly at the selection of 'cereal' we stock - most of it is very high sugar; nobody needs chocolate at breakfast! We only carry a couple of lines of sugar free muesli but at least six different types of very sugary flakes (often with added nuts and chocolate). It's unnecessary. When I was young, sweet breakfast was an extra spoon of sugar on your cornflakes.

Also, 'portion' calories. Yeah, right...

leckford · 11/12/2019 16:18

Do the same as cigarettes, 20% tax on junk food

AllergicToAMop · 11/12/2019 16:19

Same problem like with ban. Define bad food

CAG12 · 11/12/2019 16:19

Nope. People need to take responsibility for themselves.

I do think there needs to be an advertising campaign about the negative effects on health that junk food has, similar to the smoking kills adverts.

andpancakesforbreakfast · 11/12/2019 16:20

20% tax on junk food

but, again, what is "junk food".

Also, you can eat the most beautiful food in the world, if your portion sizes are wrong, you'll still get fat.

IHaveBrilloHair · 11/12/2019 16:20

Well MN gets hysterical over peas, fruit, biscuits and basically all food except for maybe porridge, so all food adverts would be banned!

QuestionableMouse · 11/12/2019 16:21

I'm a fatty and I've never once seen an ad for KFC and thought "yeah, I could murder some of that,"

Junk food isn't the problem - the fact most people on a lower wage either don't h ab e time to cook or don't know how to cook from scratch is a big part of it. Plus calories from junk food are cheaper which again appeals to those of us who are skint.

People having (basically unlimited) access to cheap booze also isn't helping. It's a complicated subject and not so simple as banning adverts.

AllergicToAMop · 11/12/2019 16:26

I don't agree that that's the case anymore.
But! I agree that problem is that people don't cook.

Picklypickles · 11/12/2019 16:36

I can't see it making much difference at this point, everyone will still know that junk food exists and will carry on buying it regardless of whether they've seen an advert for it or not.
