Just that really - looking for inspiration beyond Charades and the few board games we have in the cupboard.

Ready to buy things - or be inspired by yours¡

5 second rule

ChristmasFluff · 11/12/2019 07:57

Yes, 5 second rule! We always end up shouting 'a ghooooost!' like Joey in Friends when we get stuck.

and Cards Against Humanity

DailyMailHater · 11/12/2019 08:01

We loved bears v babies and have purchased Santa v Jesus for Xmas day with the older (late teens / early 20s) ones

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 11/12/2019 08:27

Cards Against Humanity and Exploding Kittens. Can't get on with Bears vs Babies, it's so bloody complicated!

Verily1 · 11/12/2019 08:30

Exploding kittens
Dobble
Poker!

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 11/12/2019 08:36

Hoping to get Dominion sorted for ds who is a board game fan, so good to see that recommended. Any recommendations for more 'fun' games? We already have exploding kittens/unstable unicorns...do we need bears vs babies too??

SomewhereInbetween1 · 11/12/2019 09:08

Cannot recommend The Chameleon enough. It's a really funny game about perception and description. Basically grown up articulate!

rhubarbcrumbles · 11/12/2019 09:27

Pandemic looks good, Amazon says it needs a non-standard battery - does anybody have it to confirm if this is nonsense/true and if so which battery please?

Would you play Cards for Humanity with an only just 16 year old?

rhubarbcrumbles · 11/12/2019 09:28

^sorry, meant against not for.

SeaViewBliss · 11/12/2019 09:31

I've just ordered the Blockbuster Film Game. (Blockbuster as in the old video rental shop - not I'll have a P please Bob!) We're all big film fans.

I've also looked at exploding kittens so may get that.

An old family favourite is Pictureka - mine are 14 and 21 and both love it.

turkeyontheplate · 11/12/2019 09:34

I've just bought Cards Against Muggles which I'm insanely excited about. We've played Cards Against Humanity with our teenage DSs and it was great fun, this is similar but Harry Potter based.

SeaViewBliss · 11/12/2019 09:35

Oh just remembered - we always do some chocolate challenges - I think if you google Ant and Decs chocolate challenge there are some videos.

It's things like who can build the tallest tower of rolos, moving maltesers with a straw and moving an after eight from your forehead to your mouth without using your hands! Much hilarity!!

JudgeRindersMinder · 11/12/2019 14:22

@rhubarbcrumbles we did last year with my son and niece (this probably tells you something about my family!)

It was hilarious because they were initially trying to pretend they didn’t know what some things meant, because they were embarrassed that they did know 😂

rhubarbcrumbles · 11/12/2019 14:23

@JudgeRindersMinder - you've just sold it to me. That's got to be worth seeing Xmas Grin

JudgeRindersMinder · 11/12/2019 14:25

Then there was when they pretended they did know some things and were frantically googling on their phones....it’s definitely getting played again this year!

blackpinkinyourarea · 11/12/2019 14:27

I've just bought Headhackers to play with DH and our family. We are all adults but i think it would appeal to late teens too!

dimsum123 · 11/12/2019 15:16

Watching

30to50FeralHogs · 12/12/2019 21:54

Would you play Cards for Humanity with an only just 16 year old?

I’m afraid to say, yes I would! Obviously there are some very dodgy cards in there, but nothing they haven’t already seen/heard from friends! It was also a big hit with my DP’s 95 y/o grandad Grin

Fros · 12/12/2019 23:06

Pandemic (no batteries required), Munchkin, Love Letter, Exploding Kittens, Flux, Betrayal at House on the Hill, Takenono, Mysterium, Sushi Go, Zombicide Black Plague, Eldritch Horror, Gloomhaven, Red Dragon Inn,
Mah Jongg
Plus any of a huge number of games you can play with a pack (or two) of standard playing cards, and/or a set of dice; and they'll be at least one jigsaw on the go somewhere.
(and anyone who knows me in RL has just identified me from that list!)

The whole family from great great grandparents down have been 'gamers' of a sort, these days computer games (mobile/ps4/xbox) are things that you do if you're on your own or at different locations and on chat, otherwise it's card or board games. It's a rare week someone doesn't ask "anyone want a game of...?" And my Nan only stays anywhere for longer than it takes for her drink to cool if some sort of game starts Grin

We tend to alternate cooperative and competitive games, that way you don't build up a losing streak and avoid bad feelings.

We also have scrabble, backgammon, cludo, monopoly, chess, reversi, other classics, but while someone might fancy Chinese checkers once in a while, these are mostly dust collectors.

CAH is fun at first (unless it's changed recently the creator has the original deck available as a free pdf if you want to view it) older teens/uni aged young adults, and even savvy 14yo+ teens tend to really enjoy it, as do retirement age relatives, however we found that it got old kinda fast, as things that rely on shock value tend to do.

footphobic · 12/12/2019 23:54

We love Goat Lords, Linkee, Mister Listers Quiz Shootout, Articulate, 221B, Smart Ass, Yahztee to name a few. We still like the Maltesers game too, doesn’t matter how old they get 😄

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 13/12/2019 00:05

My favourite game is Articulate. We usually play Linkee with the extended family on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. I like Settlers of Catan.

Our family however is obsessed with board games so we will probably play games I haven't played before.

OOh yes Perudo was another one I bought after reading about it on here - dice in a cup game, a bit like 'Cheat' but my DCs enjoyed calling out "Dudo" ("I doubt it" in Spanish apparently) in funny voices Grin

I guess the dice rolling is the most fun part of a board game, so this game just majors on that part!

loveyouradvice · 15/12/2019 01:36

Going to buy a few of these and see what happens!

Yes, we love Articulate - and Pictionary and keen to try some new ones

I've ordered Pandemic on the strength of this thread.

My children all play Cards Against Humanity (age 18, 16 and 14).

Everyone but me loves Exploding Kittens.

We like Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Cluedo.

We all love Five Crowns.

We play a fair amount of Poker, Rummy, Blackjack, Stop the Bus, Shithead, and others.

We never go anywhere without a pack of cards.

This Christmas holiday I'm planning on teaching everyone Mahjong and Canasta.
