....for eating my dinner! (Leon chicken satay box, not very stinky). She keeps side-eyeing me every time I take a mouthful. Am also a tweny by it tipsy after post off-site drinks. It's been a looooong day ( up v early for train to London then full day of meetings).
She's going to be even more enraged when I get the mince pie dessert out in a minute! Grin

Leon is rubbish these days compared to days of yore. YABU OP for not choosing a better take-away. Itsu for me!

London to Leeds after a long day, not unreasonable to eat on the train, crack on. HOpefully you're not dropping it down your front or chewing noisily. Just don't do that thing of playing a movie on your 'phone with no earphones. Why do people do THAT??

Jumpi · 10/12/2019 22:00

I bet you’re a noisy eater too. You sound the type.

beautifulstranger101 · 10/12/2019 22:01

If its lunch time and I'm hungry, then I'm eating on the train. Yes, the train that you know.... sells food to be eaten ON THE TRAIN. Of course I can go longer than 30 minutes without eating but if I am hungry then why shouldn't I eat food that the train itself has sold me and provided me to eat. If you object to it so much maybe write to British rail and campaign for them to stop selling food......

messolini9 · 10/12/2019 22:02

Eau de Bland it is, then. With the added benefit of a guarantee never to take the shine off your pearls.

Disfordarkchocolate · 10/12/2019 22:02

I used to regularly leave a meeting in London at 4 pm and get home at 9:10 pm. Do you seriously think I should have no food @andpancakesforbreakfast?

messolini9 · 10/12/2019 22:02

balls. NOTED, not 'noyed'.

[pours 2nd glass of red]
worry I'm not on the train

dontalltalkatonce · 10/12/2019 22:03

What are people supposed to do when they will be travelling for hours

Enjoy their meal, put your headphones on and ignore grumpy gits. They're miserable everywhere they go, you can even see the same ones on other threads being bitter and hateful, they don't pay your rent or bills, you'll never see them again, crack on and eat your Leon/Itsu/Pret.

Myotherusernamewastakenagain · 10/12/2019 22:03

Messolini - nearly right, I spend lots of money on hot takeaway food and would never buy a sandwich for tea even if it was my own money. Sandwiches and cold food are for lunch, not your tea.

BeatriceTheBeast · 10/12/2019 22:04

I find there is a thinly veiled thread of racism that runs through "nasty stinky food" complaints because it often refers to food that isn't super white and English

Nah, what about the now infamous hard boiled egg on a train thread? It was definitely eggs and broccoli or smoked fish, all of which are classically British foods, which people used to lose their proverbial over in offices I've worked in.

I actually could see their point with that actually...why did someone feel the need to cook broccoli or smoked haddock in the microwave in the communal kitchen at lunch time? But I can't say I cried over it or whatever. I'm not that uptight.

messolini9 · 10/12/2019 22:04

um ... that hyperlink that isn't a hyperlink? I dunno either.

Was MEANT to read, inside double square brackets -
don't worry I'm not on the train

beautifulstranger101 · 10/12/2019 22:07

I am not aware of the boiled egg story!! it sounds hilarious.
But my point is- what is "smelly" is very subjective. What I find "smelly" might be your favourite food, it could be something thats been in your family for generations. What you find "smelly" might be something completely different and I might find that smell glorious. Therefore, the idea of banning "smelly" food is ridiculous because who gets to decide what food is offensive and what isn't? Also, if you google "smelly food and racism" you will find lots of articles about how often our labelling of "smelly food" is really just cultural intolerance.

Bowerbird5 · 10/12/2019 22:08

Wow I can’t believe all the judgy people on here.

I hope you enjoyed your meal. I haven’t ever had a Leon but will look out for it in Leeds because I go there occasionally to the Printfest.

I used to travel with my kids from the north of Scotland to England with my kids x1 then x2 then x 3 we moved by number four. I took a picnic basket. We had sandwiches, crisps, little pots of chopped fruit, dried fruit, homemade cake and a flask of tea for me. Los of people on long distance trains used to take something as the buffet car or trolley sometimes didn’t go.
My kids had to eat two meals during that and I couldn’t risk walking two under fives up to the buffet car also I was skint after the fare once the eldest turned five. Then I had a baby. I suppose some people on here think I should have made him wait till I got to in laws instead of breast feeding on the train.

OP the best train trip I had was when I was going to see my daughter at uni down south. I met two gay lads and their pussy on the train from Preston to Cheltenham. They had had a wild weekend in Blackpool one was from there and the other from Cheltenham. It was the most hilarious journey they not only had food they had wine 🍷 bottles of it!
They were already more than tipsy.
Some people moved but another lady with her two girls and I stayed and they were like a comedy act. In fact funnier than most of the comedians on tv. They even helped me with my luggage when they found I was changing to the same train. I actually felt sorry when they got off. Best day travelling I have ever had.
They shared the wine with the other lady and I once we started to join in. And the cat in its basket. Oh so so funny.

You enjoy your meals on the long hauls and never mind. Unless the train is full they can always move. It is why I always used to book to get a table seat.
I ‘m sure some are jealous they didn’t bring something. I used to think they were jealous of our 🧺 picnic.

CherryPavlova · 10/12/2019 22:15

Racism? That’s a bit of an extreme extrapolation.
Personally, I’d rather tolerate meze with pitta and hummus than a smelly tinned tuna salad or a Pizza with garlic dip.
It’s not being uptight or grumpy. People with motion sickness don’t want to vomit over the person shovelling in a giant burger and chips washed down with a beer. I suspect the oblivious eaters would be the first to complain if someone was vomiting beside them.
People don’t want their dry clean only work clothes smelling of cheap takeaways.
People don’t want to watch others chomping or spraying food all over their laptops when they answer their phone in a very loud manner with a still full mouth.
Its just ill mannered. Eat in a cafe, at home or away from others. Keep your shoes on too.

BerwickLad · 10/12/2019 22:18

What, in case someone pukes in them?

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 10/12/2019 22:18

@andpancakesforbreakfast I was on the train for 2 hrs15 mins, and then the tube across London for 30 mins before that. So not a 30 mins trip.

Just home, after a 7.30 start this morning so am dead my feet. But yeah, I totally should've waited till 10.15pm to get myself something nice to eat.

Thanks to all of the non judgy and very funny people for making my trip. And now I'M OUT! Smile

I'd definitely take a curry smell over a can of Redbull smell 🤢. What is the origin of Redbull I wonder? Whatever, it smells of bin juice to me.

Does anyone like the smell of microwaved broccoli or microwaved egg..? Or a smoked haddock fillet microwaved in milk?

I also used to live with a guy in Paris who microwaved horse steaks till they were grey and ate them. It was one of the grossest foods I have ever seen in my life and the smell wasn't nice either. I don't think anyone would have enjoyed smelling it...? I mean is it THAT subjective?

FWIW the guy in question had this thing where he genuinely didn't get any pleasure from food, so he just ate to function. So, cheap horse steaks in the microonde it was 🤢.

gerrytrude · 10/12/2019 22:22

Yanbu for using your expenses wisely
Yabu for not thinking Leon's satay doesn't have a strong smell because it does

Shame @Dolorabelle wasnt in your carriage
Wasabi curry overpowers yours

FelicityBeedle · 10/12/2019 22:30

I don’t get the hate for eating on trains, do you people never go out to eat?

Also the hatred for full meals, do you hate it in first class too where full meals are served? Particularly the eggs and salmon? Or is that fine

gerrytrude · 10/12/2019 22:33

First class meals are not full meals. They are still plane food type stuff. They rarely have a strong smell though, apart from bacon.

Sleep well op

messolini9 · 10/12/2019 22:41

What, in case someone pukes in them?

THANK you, @BerwickLad

dontalltalkatonce · 10/12/2019 22:47

Its just ill mannered. Eat in a cafe, at home or away from others. Keep your shoes on too.

Nah. Food is sold on the trains, too, to eat on them.

dontalltalkatonce · 10/12/2019 22:54

I have motion sickness. It's my problem. Not everyone else's. I take a tablet before I get on the train.

See, some people don't really give a fuck if someone eats around them.

I think hummus smells worse than pizza personally, but I speak for myself, not all people.
