Tesco delivery

BusyBB · 10/12/2019 11:32

I usually take my Tesco delivery at the front door. the delivery person stands holding the tray and I try to take the heaviest things first and put the on the stalls I have waiting round the corner. One older lady driver sometimes takes the heavier items out and passes them to me before holding the tray with the lighter items. This is all fine.

I'm currently off work with a back injury, after being attacked by one of the disabled people I look after. Maybe I would feel differently about this if I wasn't.

so today's delivery, the driver said "are you okay with your shopping" to which I said yes, thinking he was talking about if I wanted it bought in or to take it from the door step. But instead he just put the stack in front of my door. there was 4 boxes with the first one I thought "ok, no reason for him to hold it for me as it's about the same height" but then he just took the boxes away one by one and I had to bend lower and lower to pick up my items. All in a rush because he is standing there shivering and not making conversation. I felt too embarrassed to ask him to lift the boxes for me.
AIBU to expect that he should have lifted the boxes or items without me having to ask?

@PinkSqidgyPig there's no need for the OP to swap to Ocado, as Tesco delivery people will also bring shopping into the home if you ask.
The delivery person asked if she was ok with her shopping and she said yes. Why would he think he needed to do any more than put the crates down for her to unpack?

I always just take my shopping out of the crates at the front door and then carry through to the kitchen, but since I have been visibly pregnant, a lot of the delivery people will ask if I would like it taken through to the kitchen or ask if they can unload the heavy items onto our coat stand next to the front door.

Spam88 · 10/12/2019 13:14

I've only ever unloaded them off the floor by the front door (they always ask where I'd like them but I decline the offer of them bringing them in for me). I'm actually cringing at the thought of making them stand there holding each crate in turn for me so I can unload them from a comfortable height 🙈

Delivery into your house isn't an 'extra', as they advertise that they deliver to your fridge door. I occasionally feel slightly guilty if an older delivery person arrives, but I have back problems and cannot carry the trays. As long as you ensure that access is clear / doors are wedged open and they have a place to set down the trays there shouldn't be an issue.
My drivers also get ice lollies in the summer :-)

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 10/12/2019 13:36

All you had to do was smile and say can you help please, I have a bad back at the moment. I've found 99% of delivery drivers very obliging.

ThinkIamflyingundertheradar · 10/12/2019 13:40

YABU to expect him to know how you prefer things done. My regular Tesco drivers know I like them to carry it into the kitchen and place the boxes on the counter for me. But anyone new I would always ask them to do that. I don’t expect them to just know.

SilverySurfer · 10/12/2019 13:52

Because I'm disabled and use a walking frame, I've found the easiest for me is for them to come into the hall. I have a trolly on wheels and an extra large bag and ask them to put most items in the bag and a few bulky items on the hall table, then it's easy to wheel into the kitchen for putting away.

CluelessNewMama · 10/12/2019 13:56

Just ask for what you want. I order from Sainsbury’s and Ocado and usually ask them to bring it into the kitchen and help me unpack the boxes. It’s much quicker for both of us that way. I see no reason Tesco wouldn’t do the same if you asked

Mumwiferealist2003 · 10/12/2019 13:56

I've recently started with Tesco. All but one have been helpful. I wasn't sure what the drill was with there not being bags but the guy I had first happily emptied the crates into my shopping bags I had ready. I don't want the drivers walking through my house to my kitchen. I've had trouble from other stores and I don't want to do it.
I had a problem with some items so glee to call Tesco. While I was on the phone I mentioned that particular driver hadn't been all that helpful and they told me they are supposed to unpack the crates for you, where you want it done. So you just need to ask. And if they don't or won't call Tesco.

PinkSqidgyPig · 10/12/2019 15:10

MsSquiz: it's good to see so many people have had this helpfulness from Tesco. I guess I was just unfortunate back when I used them.
As I had a disc problem then I asked for them to bring it in. But was told repeatedly that they didn't do that.
This is what made me move to Ocado. Although now they are partnering up with M&S I will probably change. Bit too rich for my purse!
I'll try Tesco again 😉.

PinkSqidgyPig · 10/12/2019 15:12

... and, yes always explain and ask for help!

Cacklingmags · 10/12/2019 17:04

I had a terrible sciatic injury that has caused me ongoing problems 4 years later, from taking items from the Tesco box on the floor. Now I ask them to put the boxes on a table - should have done that 4 years ago. Don't feel bad to ask them to do whatever is necessary to save you injury.

Jeeperscreepers69 · 10/12/2019 18:02

That's what delivery drivers do at mine. Put trays on step i bag up and take to kitchen.

Didntwanttochangemyname · 10/12/2019 18:32

How do you expect people around you to magically know what you want?

user1471449295 · 10/12/2019 18:37

YABVVU.

Lllot5 · 10/12/2019 18:38

My Tesco drivers all bring the crates into the the kitchen and help me unpack onto the worktop.
Just ask.

AG29 · 10/12/2019 18:39

I am certain he would of been more helpful if he knew your circumstances.

TheTrollFairy · 10/12/2019 18:46

Get them to bring it to your kitchen?
Mine brings them in and helps unload onto the kitchen work top.
I am young(ish) and have RA and the guys are nothing but helpful even when I’m having a good day.

TheTrollFairy · 10/12/2019 18:48

Just to add, I agree with the others.
He asked you if you were ok and you said yes, he wasn’t to know you have injured your back unless you say something (I’m not sure why it would be embarrassing)

Darkstar4855 · 10/12/2019 18:56

YABU, everyone has different preferences. I would feel bad making the driver stand there holding the tray while I took stuff out so I get them to put them down on my step and I take everything out while they go and get the chilled and frozen bits.

They don’t know you have a bad back. Just ask them to bring the trays in and put them on the table for you.

Instatwat · 10/12/2019 19:05

How was he meant to know? Yes, YABU, next time be an adult and vocalise your requirements. Telepathy isn’t massively common.

Andie179 · 10/12/2019 19:20

I’m a Tesco driver, we would have held the shopping up for you or put it where you wanted if you had asked. It’s one of our busiest times of the year, we’ve got a lot to do in a short space of time. The driver asked you if it was ok to put your shopping down, at that point you should have asked home what you wanted.

shinynewapple · 10/12/2019 20:01

YABU I ask the drivers to bring my shopping in to the kitchen and put the boxes on the table for me. It works out quicker for me to unload than if they just left at the front door.

Mlou32 · 10/12/2019 20:39

I used to work for the Tesco Grocery Home Delivery call centre. A driver was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in her house (she had a history of minor accusations against numerous drivers) therefore that particular store advises drivers not to go in to houses anymore. So some drivers may not come in.

Scummymummy56 · 10/12/2019 20:58

I vote AYFS. Are you fucking serious?

Waveysnail · 10/12/2019 21:04

Mine carry through to kitchen and unload on the bench or table
