To vote Lib Dem?

sweatbomb · 08/12/2019 20:02

Help me out. Are there any glaringly obvious reasons not to vote for them? I've never voted Labour and I don't feel that my previous party aligns with my views... doing online quizzes on my beliefs comes out with majority Lib Dem!

I just hope we get a political change 🤷🏻‍♀️

I voted them in 2010 and they threw out almost every policy and promise to appease the Tory coalition so I don’t have faith in them. I think they’d happily do the same again.

LizzieSiddal · 08/12/2019 20:51

They want to stop Brexit. They aren’t going to support a Tory govt who want a hard Brexit.

Velveteenfruitbowl · 08/12/2019 20:52

If you agree with their policies they’re probably the best party to vote for.

ritzbiscuits · 08/12/2019 20:53

I think you need to listen to her Woman's Hour interview (this Friday at 10am) and make your own mind up from there.

Absolutely can't stand the Lib Dems at the moment. I'm a staunch remainer, but find the whole immediate revoke policy absolutely bonkers. Jo has a bad record voting for austerity politics and don't get me started on their stance re: Gender Recognition Act.

If I lived in a constituency which was a big Tory majority and therefore Lib Dem was the only serious other contender, I'd have to consider holding my nose and voting for them, but I'm not 100% sure I could!

Self-ID.

Disfordarkchocolate · 08/12/2019 20:54

Listen to the inglorious leader on Women's Hour last week. Shocking.

SentimentalKiller · 08/12/2019 20:54

They will support a Tory government

MarshaBradyo · 08/12/2019 20:56

I don’t want to vote for them now as I don’t feel they are for me or women after that R4 interview on self ID

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/12/2019 21:00

I’d hold my nose and vote for whoever keeps the Tory’s out.

Much as I dislike the self-ID stuff, I cannot imagine voting Tory. I wish there was 'none of the above'.

MrsMaiselsMuff · 08/12/2019 21:01

They want to stop Brexit. They aren’t going to support a Tory govt who want a hard Brexit.

They had equally strong views on issues in 2010, tuition fees in particular.

I would vote LibDem where it was the best tactical choice, but in that case you need to do your research to ensure they truly are. They have been sending out letters from an "election specialist" claiming they are the only party that can beat the Tories, in several constituencies where they're definitely not the tactical choice. That's on top of their equally dubious bar charts.

Vote tactically. Double check who the best tactical choice is. And hope they don't return to previous form.

Fairenuff · 08/12/2019 21:11

I have had more recycling waste from Lib Dems than any other party by far so I don't think they really care about the environment.

Topseyt · 08/12/2019 21:16

I might have voted for them if Vince Cable was still leader as I rather liked him.

I'm not a fan of Jo Swinson though. She hasn't run a good campaign. I therefore cannot bring myself to vote for them despite being a staunch remainder, which should in theory attract me to their cancel Brexshit policy.

Instead, I am tossing up between voting Labour or Green. Probably Labour, because they may make more of an impression on the probably unassailable lead of the Tories in this very safe Conservative constituency.

AloneLonelyLoner · 08/12/2019 21:36

After hearing Swinson's voting record and their stance on self-id, I can never vote for them. This makes me sad as I would so liked to have believed in them again (I'm a staunch remainer).

But I'm a believer in safety for women and science more.

LizzieSiddal · 08/12/2019 21:50

There’s no way Labour will get a majority but there’s a very good chance the Tory’s will. (The best Labour can hope for is a coalition with the SNP and Lib Dem’s)
If you want to keep the Tory’s out, please vote tactically. If you live in a marginal seat, your vote could swing the election away from a Tory majority.

Snuffkindle · 08/12/2019 22:00

Depends.on where you live and if your vote is likely to make a difference. If you live in a safe seat vote for the policies you believe in. If you live in a marginal seat be more tactical eg if you want the Tories out vote for who was second last time.

Alsohuman · 08/12/2019 22:03

Vote for whoever will beat the Tory candidate in your constituency.

Snowjive2 · 08/12/2019 22:05

The idea that the Lib Dem’s would go into coalition with the Tories again is a rumour started by the Fake Digital News Team at Conservative Party HQ. You only have to remember how Jo Swinson looked at Boris Johnson in Parliament in the debates before he blocked Parliament by lying to the Queen and unlawfully proroguing it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such contempt, disdain and loathing on an MP’s face.

Well, apart from when Jess Phillips was speaking to him. Or Anna Soubry. Or Joanna Cherry QC. Or any of the strong women in Parliament, actually!

Oysterbabe · 08/12/2019 22:06

I want to vote for them too but they aren't standing in my constituency. I've just organised a vote swap with a friend of a friend, I'm voting Green for her and she's voting Lib Dem for me.

Lightkeeper · 08/12/2019 22:06

I'm voting LibDem. I'm a strong Remainer and they also happen to be the best option for a tactical vote where I live.

They are the sanest party in England... and that's saying something.

Jarstastic · 08/12/2019 22:08

I've already voted, I voted LibDem.

ThunderboltandLightning · 08/12/2019 22:10

I am firmly anti-Brexit. And similarly firmly anti-self-ID. How do I prioritise those conflicting interests? I have voted for the most convincing local candidate. Who happens to be LibDem. I have chosen to go with the anti-Brexit stance, on the basis that self-ID is likely to get a whole lot more spotlight before being committed to legislation. Yes, lots of organizations are jumping the gun. I know that. But there were no good options. I had to pick 'least worst'. And locally, that is LibDem.

Lightkeeper · 08/12/2019 22:13

ritzbiscuits

Unfortunately, we are set to leave the EU at the end of January with no option to delay any longer (as far as I know). Planning another referendum will take time. The only sane option really is revoking Article 50 and then plan our next steps to give us time.

Theresa May should never have implemented Article 50 without having a f*cking plan!

sweatbomb · 09/12/2019 11:10

I listened to R4 love on Friday and I thought the interviewer was a bit of a dick, I don't agree with self-ID but it seems the lesser of two (three?) evils.
