To think we are turning into a one party state?

It is unhealthy, in fact toxic, that we are likely to get another 5 - 10 years of the same party being in government.

I can't bear another decade of this party running everything to the ground. I can't bear to live through another decade of individualism. I'd like to see education and arts, culture and sports flourish once more. I'd like to see unity and hope among the people.

It's like we're living in reverse. We should be having cyclic governments, not one party rule, which seems to be the trend for this generation. I despair.

China is a one party state. We are not. We are simply suffering from having an opposition that has lost touch with reality and therefore lost all credibility. As soon as Labour step away from the little red book and elect themselves a half decent leader normal people will be falling over themselves to vote for them again.

bellinisurge · 09/12/2019 15:46

I've lived in a one party state. It's not even fucking close.

leckford · 09/12/2019 15:49

The problem with Labour began, as I understand it, when they decided to elect the leader by members votes. This allowed any communist/socialist worker party/militant tendency person to vote for Corbyn. In addition many others who do not want Labour in power voted for him so Labour became too extreme to elect.

Until they change their system/free themselves from Momentum they are stuffed!

reginafelangee · 09/12/2019 15:52

I think suggesting we are a one party state is completely flippant and pretty appalling when you consider what one party states actually are.

We have freedom of speech, free and fair elections (in which several parties stand for election), a free media.

The tories don't even currently have a majority - how is that a one party state?

yasle · 09/12/2019 15:52

You can blame Jeremy Corbyn for not stepping aside when scores of his own MPs wrote letters.

leckford · 09/12/2019 15:59

The truly rich, many of them foreign, may live in the U.K. but their assets - houses and other property, are usually owned through trusts and companies run for them in places like Jersey, the Cayman islands etc. The money is already offshore and difficult for the comrades to get their hands on. Several companies threatened with nationalisation have already moved their HQs abroad again difficult and expensive to do much about

NameChangeNugget · 09/12/2019 16:01

JC & his momentum pals are solely to blame.

A moderate, left centralist in the David Miliband mould, would be running rings around the Tories.

It’s going to be like a stubborn floater trying to flush out the hard left in a party, which is so unelectable, it’s embarrassing.

When normal service is resumed, I will renew my party membership.

otterturk · 09/12/2019 16:36

We are only a one party state due to the inadequacy of the opposition.

This is democracy. If you want to blame someone, blame Labour for being shite.

otterturk · 09/12/2019 16:37

More to the point, we had 13 years of Labour government. We've only had four years of sole Conservative government, following five years of Conservative/Lib Dem coalition. I would say that's probably quite a healthy turn-around for your average western democracy.

BMW6 · 09/12/2019 16:50

So OP - were we a One Party State from 1997 to 2010???

N0, of course not. It is a ridiculous suggestion and offensive to those who truly HAVE suffered under a One Party State.

The truth is that a lot of people think Tories are shit, but current Labour shittier.

If Momentum and it's Marxist ideology are booted out from the party and they adopt a more centrist position I have no doubt that they could easily win a GE. Until then - don't get your hopes up.

ForalltheSaints · 09/12/2019 16:51

We are not a one party state and never will be. We are just living through a period with the worst Prime Minister of all time, and I challenge anyone to find a worse one in any democracy.

HotWaterBottleAndABottleOfWine · 09/12/2019 16:59

:( I agree OP. It's shit

Lllot5 · 09/12/2019 17:06

If the the Conservatives are so shit. (I’m not saying they are)
Then why aren’t Labour running away with the election?
We can’t all be wicked, racist, misogynistic?

Charley50 · 09/12/2019 17:08

What we really need is a change of mindset from the very wealthy. They need to realise themselves that huge wealth isn't everything and actually want to give away a bit more of their 'hard-earned' cash, to help society in general.
Until this happens they'll always find a way to hide money.

cakeisalwaystheanswer · 09/12/2019 17:11

Politicians are all ego. Hilary Clinton knew that the electorate hated her but still insisted on running and look how that turned out. Any other democrat candidate would have been elected.

Labour MPs know that Corbyn is a disaster, they voted to remove him but propped up by Momentum he insisted on staying as a leader and keeping an appalling leadership team in place. A terrorist offence takes place during the election campaign and the shadow home secretary isn't allowed to comment in case she says something foolish or someone points out that her DS was causing a public disturbance at the same time near the attack. Labour are beyond parody, I think the turnout will be low.

SnowyChristmasTree · 09/12/2019 17:15

If Labour got their act together they'd absolutely wipe the floor with Boris and the Tories.

I actually don't dislike Jeremy Corbyn, but it's clear that he is too unpopular with too many people.

user1497207191 · 09/12/2019 17:21

What we really need is a change of mindset from the very wealthy.

Good luck with that! Not sure how you're going to change the mindset of the wealthy from all countries all over the World. The trouble with "the rich" is that they work with, socialise with, marry, other rich people from other countries. They're in their own little bubble, competing with each other as regards their yachts, their holidays, their jewelry, their holiday homes, their Islands. etc. Just look at the tax havens like Monaco, Panama, Gibraltar, even Isle of Man which has been famous recently for yacht and private jet VAT avoidance!! It's like nuclear disarmarment - one country doing it on their own is crazy - it needs all countries to be on board. The tax havens will never agree because their economies are based mostly on the tax avoidance industry!

otterturk · 09/12/2019 17:30

In my experience, the people who talk about "the rich" and "the wealthy" in such blanket terms haven't a clue of the realities of tax burdens, namely that >30% of tax is paid by the top 1% of earners and the proportion who are truly very wealthy is absolutely tiny.

BMW6 · 09/12/2019 17:39

What we really need is a change of mindset from the very wealthy.

By all accounts it's not the wealthy who are turning away from Labour!

Anotherthink · 09/12/2019 18:48

So ottoturk, are they left unable to afford basic necessities after paying their tax or are they still living in luxury? I earn under £20k per year, struggle due to ongoing debts but would be happy to increase my tax if it was going to pay for policies that made our society a fairer place. Everyone I've ever spoken to on this matter feels the same.

Yet if you're in the top bracket of taxation you become a tight arse and move abroad to count your bags of money. Pure greed.

The country was in a sorry state 5 years ago when we miliband was leader. He was more moderate than Corbyn and got torn to shreds. Funnily enough the press didn't like him either.

So do people make any of their choices based on policy, or is it just a personality contest?

Iamnotagoddess · 09/12/2019 18:52

Labour commuted suicide when they voted in the wrong Milliband brother because he was in the pockets of the unions.

Should have replaced Corbyn with Keir Starmer a year ago.

user1497207191 · 09/12/2019 19:13

By all accounts it's not the wealthy who are turning away from Labour!

Alan Sugar used to be a Labour supporter.....until Corbyn.

Iamnotagoddess · 09/12/2019 19:19

Alan Sugar is also Jewish!

Love51 · 09/12/2019 19:23

I thought one party state meant that one party hold all the seats. The Tories haven't even had a parliamentary majority throughout much of this time.
Can anyone enlighten me?

Anotherthink · 09/12/2019 19:33

Labour are criticised for their time in office under Blair & Brown and yet told they need to become more moderate and should have voted in David Miliband (new labour Blairite moderate).

When they veer away from the middle ground and new labour they are criticised for being 'extreme' when they are just going back to the roots of the labour party and wanting to introduce policies which are successful in other countries already.
