To think we are turning into a one party state?

It is unhealthy, in fact toxic, that we are likely to get another 5 - 10 years of the same party being in government.

I can't bear another decade of this party running everything to the ground. I can't bear to live through another decade of individualism. I'd like to see education and arts, culture and sports flourish once more. I'd like to see unity and hope among the people.

It's like we're living in reverse. We should be having cyclic governments, not one party rule, which seems to be the trend for this generation. I despair.

The Labour Party was warned that jumping off the deep end of extreme socialism would stop them winning elections. They didn’t listen.

In fact, they told anyone who disagreed with them to fuck off and join the Tories. So we did Smile

Ed Balls as PM? You serious?

When compared with Corbyn or Brown, hell yes!

They never learn. Surely they can't have forgotten the Kinnock and Foot years?

SexTrainGlue · 08/12/2019 20:23

It’s not just labour. It’s also first past the post which means labour really can’t get a majority in this election

??

The current constituency boundaries are generally, held to give Labour significant advantage

WeWantSweet · 08/12/2019 20:31

I seem to be on my own with this but I still think that the missing centrist offering is a party who leans left on the economy and right on social mores of the personal responsibility kind.

whiteroseredrose · 08/12/2019 20:32

As has already been said, and as I've said on a previous thread. We desperately need a credible opposition and alternative to the Tories. Not far left Momentum and Corbyn promising the moon.

I've voted Labour in the past but have voted Green and Lib Dem more recently. They elected the wrong Miliband and it set them off in the wrong direction. At the moment I'm even tempted to vote Tory to keep Labour out. If Labour get trounced maybe they'll dump Corbyn and be electable again.

Paddy1234 · 08/12/2019 20:34

David Milliband would have got my vote anyday

Paddy1234 · 08/12/2019 20:35

And I know a lot of conservative voters who would have switched over

Butterisbest · 08/12/2019 20:35

If the labour leader was accepted by the media and was scrutinised for genuine issues then things would be different
If you genuinely believe this then I fear for the Labour Party.

ListeningQuietly · 08/12/2019 20:36

Was the Antisemitism utterly ingrained in the Labour party under the previous leader?
Or did it magically appear in 2015?

DeeZastris · 08/12/2019 20:37

Agree with dementedma in that we already have a one party state in Scotland. They vote as one in Westminster and take their instructions from Sturgeon. Sturgeon is also married to the CEO if the SNP.

Funny that you should say that. Jeremy Corbyn was elected leader of the Labour Party in 2015

ListeningQuietly · 08/12/2019 20:48

Butterisbest
so, did it precede Jeremy or not?

CendrillonSings · 08/12/2019 20:55

It’s not the other parties’ fault if Labour’s so shit that no one wants to vote for it. They actually have to, y’know, win elections and stuff Wink

AuntieStella · 08/12/2019 21:01

What was noticeable about Scotland is that theTories came second across the board (and that if there were PR they wouid have a decent number of Tory Scottish seats)

We don't have a one party state - loads of parties exist and are fielding candidates. That many f them are crap is a whole different issue

Lightkeeper · 08/12/2019 21:13

Yes, because anyone with significant wealth and is able to, will leave immediately.

Where do you think would they go?! There's a reason they chose London (let's face it... that's where most are) versus say Paris or Amsterdam, etc. And it wasn't just because of tax.

ChristmasSpirtsOnTheRocksPleas · 08/12/2019 21:16

To be fair the conservatives under Boris might as well be a different party to the conservatives under Cameron. Even so, the lack of a half decent opposition is a huge problem regardless.

ChristmasSpirtsOnTheRocksPleas · 08/12/2019 21:19

@Lightkeeper we’re looking at Sydney and New York. There are plenty of places we could easily go where the government wouldn’t want to prevent us from living our lives the way we want and making a living. There is nothing so special about London (we’re not even in London).

Butterisbest · 08/12/2019 21:29

Listening quietly
It probably did precede Jeremy but he was the green light for Ant Semitism to become acceptable.
There are many countries that would welcome wealthy people without wanting to bleed them dry

Millymollymandybestie · 08/12/2019 21:33

I not voting as there all as bad as each other so cba

EngTech · 08/12/2019 21:42

If JC does not get in, I will be a bit miffed as I have planned out my 4 day weeks till my retirement 😳

On a serious note, people should vote, even if they spoil the ballot paper as a lot of people gave their lives to be able to vote for a person to represent you

Come Friday, there will be a lot of arguments about the result being wrong and calls for another GE

I agree though, we have not had a credible opposition for ages which is bad for democracy

Even if they don't move out of the country, their money will, you can be sure of that. I don't know if you were around in the late 1970s when James Callahan was PM of a Labour government, the highest rate of income tax rose to over 90% and there was a mass exodus of top earning people and/or their money.

Lightkeeper · 08/12/2019 21:43

If we look back into history, we all obviously know about the far right example decades ago, but I think people forget that although the 1930s Nazi party ideology is now seen as 'far right', its name was short for Na tionalso zi alistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (National Socialist German Workers' Party).

Anti-semitism tends to emerge with both: far right and far left views and has always done so for ages. I mean... with regards to socialism, just read this very old article from 1971 published in the NY Times. You can go hundreds of years back, and you'll realize the link between anti-capitalism and anti-semitism is difficult to deny.

That's one of the many reasons I don't like seeing the country go to either extreme... where are the centrists these days?!?

detachablehoof · 08/12/2019 21:51

When you remember that we fought a world war to keep communism out of this country, its frightening that there is even any small possibility of it being voted in! I don't think people realise how dangerous the Labour manifesto is and how the anti-business policies would make the country poorer.

Genuine question - brexit aside, why aren't the Lib Dens seen as a serious party? They are fairly centrist and have some sensible ideas (which admittedly I haven't studied). Once Brexit is over and done with, maybe they could become the opposition party? They get a larger % of vote than the SNP after all...

Agree with PPs that we do need a strong opposition for proper democracy. At the moment the tories are the only sensible ones!

Butterisbest · 08/12/2019 21:53

You London centrist people need to realise that there is a great big world out there that doesn't revolve around London
