Spent hours scraping wallpaper off, and only managed to do half of the wall. Surely that has to be a better and quicker way to do this without steam? Now I regret not painting over it

Have you tried damping it with warm water and washing up liquid?

Tons of warm water sponged on, leave for a few minutes, scrape away! I love stripping wallpaper

Good ways are:

1. Hire a stream wall paper stripper.
2. Bucket of warm water, washing up liquid, soak the wall, leave for 5 mins and scrape it off.
3. If it's paint over (or waterproof) you need to score it first before doing 1 or 2.

It's hard work though!

I've got sugar soap and warm water in the bucket. Maybe I'll try washing up liquid! Never knew it would be this hard!

Are you scoring the paper first?

Save yourself the hassle and go to tool station and buy a steam wallpaper stripper...probably cheaper than hiring one!! Toolstation is cheaper than screwfix for pretty much everything!!

If you haven't got a steamer, you could boil the kettle next to the wall. I hate wallpaper stripping. If there is a hell, it is almost certainly bedecked in woodchip and blown vinyl

Honest to god. Borrow a steamer. Makes the world of difference.

Score, soak, scrape.

I used quite hot water with a few splodges of washing up liquid and really really soaked the wall, to the point that water was running down it, then I immediately scraped and it came off very easily. The trick is to really soak it, not just make it a bit or a lot wet, but actually soak it! Good luck!

When we moved into our current house all 3 bedrooms had woodchip with at least 3 layers of paint over!!
Absolute hell.
Steams by far the best way, score the paper so the steam gets underneath to make it easier.

Why won’t you use a steamer? borrow or buy a cheap one.

For the love of god buy a wallpaper steamer - they're only about £20! You'll be able to get the whole room done in a few hours.

You need a steamer. If you can’t borrow one I think you can pick one up for about £30

Hot soapy water and lots of it, allow time to soak in and hey presto.

Yeah - get a proper steamer, you'll be glad you did.

Scrape the wall, spray with warm water mixed with fabric conditioner and let it soak. Should peel off

Score lines in it first, like hash lines, then stream or soak not-quite-hot water on it.

If you use the water method, score the paper first, it allows the water to penetrate.

Many, many years ago, I was stripping paper which had several layers of wallpaper, topped with paint. The paint must have been for some other purpose, because it wasn't normal wall paint, it was sort of plastic. God, that took forever to strip, the plastic paint was a nightmare. The previous owner had DIYed the house, and he was clearly crap at DIY.

Fabric softener with hot water works well

Score the paper. Soak it well. Go and do something else. Come back soak it again. Leave it for another 10-15 mins. Soak it a third time and then start. Every time you are going to have a break soak the paper.

If you have more rooms to do then get a wall paper stripper.
