Baby sleeping on duvet, worried sick

[Waaaproblems]

We bought a travel cot prior to a weekend away. I stupidly didn’t check it when it arrived. We’ve arrived at our weekend away and the ‘mattress’ is basically a series of foldable boards with a little foam on top. She screams lying on it and rightly so, it’s awful. I bought a brand new king sized duvet last week which was in the car and unopened. DD (9.5 months) was absolutely knackered and I needed to put her to bed. I’ve resorted to folding the king duvet (10 tog so quite thick 😩) around the ‘mattress’ and tucking it under. She’s absolutely sound asleep but the duvet is bunching a little. She sleeps on her front and I’m worried sick - WWYD. I haven’t taken my eyes off the monitor. We’re not staying in a hotel and there is no opportunity to buy a new mattress, we’ll do this tomorrow. How dangerous is this? I’m having kittens (yes she’s my first born)

Even with an actual young baby, hardly directly life threatening with a 9 and a half month old I can’t believe you’re saying you’re ‘worried sick’. Put her in bed with you if you’re that concerned. From the title I thought we might be talking about a newborn here. Calm down and enjoy your weekend.

You don't know it's 'hardly directly life threatening' - all the research says the exact opposite. Are you above that

Some seriously idiotic posts on here. It’s worrying. I have read about a 15 month old dying because there were too many teddies in the bed.

Cannot believe people are saying duvet isnt safe (agree its not ideal) so co sleep instead. Co sleeping isnt great either. Especially for babies and parents who dont do it regularly.

Btw op every single travel cot iv used has been exactly as you described. I take a thin fleece blanket with me to put over them usually! Might help you next time.

@gamerchick to have read that my child died in almost exactly the same circumstances (old enough to sit up, roll over, push up on arms) and still take such a blasé attitude is both baffling and saddening. Advice like yours is the reason SIDS continues to happen.

And how are they supposed to transport a full sized cot mattress home again? If you want a practical travel cot mattress you need a folding one like this:

But in any case no extra mattress is necessary (and may render the cot unsafe) although the included one is probably only about 5mm thick. Babies can sleep on that kind of thing no problem.

I would still like to see sources for the claim earlier upthread that SIDS is a risk until 5.

It's a weekend away

I've had this before and wrapped a couple of blankets round it tightly. I still didn't sleep a wink though i just watched her and in the end her Dad slept on the floor and i brought her in with me. I knew she'd probably be OK but i couldn't stop the niggle!

I know this is of no use right now but I agree that all travel cot 'matresses' are awful. We brought an additional one from mothercare (I think) which was more like a normal mattress, it folded in three to store it.

SIDS is only applicable as a medical diagnosis to infants ie aged under 1 year, so it's not correct to say that "SIDS is a risk until 5", however certain safe sleep advice, particularly any relating to suffocation, rebreathing or entrapment may be applicable until 5.

Duvets are OK from 12 months but as a covering, not a sleep surface.

But anyway - I expect they've solved it by now - it was last night OP was worried about it.

She should be fine but if you sent going to sleep put her in her pram or your bed. Her instinct would be to roll over if she can't breathe I'd think. I presume she's rolls?

IT IS NOT SAFE FOR A BABY TO SLEEP ON A SURFACE THAT IS LIABLE TO SINK/DIP (EVEN SLIGHTLY). WHETHER THEYRE AN OLDER BABY OR NOT - SIDS IS A RISK UP UNTIL THE AGE OF ONE.

@anoomooy that was my fault, I meant to hit 1 year. Rather I hit 5 by mistake. I was multitasking, talking, texting and whiching something. Typing very fast hoping that this lady would take the duvet out of the travel cot! My apologies!

We went to a hotel with our 1yr old where they had also put a duvet on to cot base under the sheet to make it more comfy. I thought the risk of the baby getting overy hot was so high I took it out. Once the baby is asleep they arent really aware of the hard cot base boards, from what I've seen most are like it. Maybe it's more that it's a different cot to get used to? Also the plasticky covering is colder to the tough when you put the baby in than a normal mattress so also feels unpleasant, can you put something warm in it first?
As others have said lift baby out and either add towels instead of completely remove the duvet before replacing her. Good luck.
