Teachers - wine for Christmas?

My kids' classes don't do group gifts, just wondering what teachers like? Wine? Chocolates? Can't have too much of either right?

Not in my experience. Every teacher I know would prefer glue sticks or packs of coloured paper to wine/chocolates/biscuits/candles etc

LunasOrchid · 06/12/2019 10:12

DH and I are teachers. Please dont buy wine/chocs/mugs etc. If you do want to buy a gift, get some pritt sticks or whiteboard pens etc. So much more helpful Smile

Allthetea · 06/12/2019 10:15

Teacher here also - glue sticks as pp suggested would be gratefully received!

phoenixrosehere · 06/12/2019 10:15

Why is wine or chocolate the go-tos when giving presents to people you know barely anything about?

IWantADifferentName · 06/12/2019 10:19

Teacher here - wine and chocolate gratefully appreciated. Print sticks, not so much. That is more of a donation to the classroom than a present.

To be fair, I am not crazy about receiving presents from students anyway but some people think it is necessary and I graciously (I hope) accept.

I have kept every single Christmas or Thank you card I have ever received from my students. When I am having a bad day, I read them and remember why I enjoy teaching.

MrsJoshNavidi · 06/12/2019 10:19

Not a teacher, but I keep getting bottles of wine as "thank you" and "well done" gifts at work.
I have about 8 in my kitchen - all white and/or fizzy wine, neither of which I drink.
Just a thank you is fine. No need for a present I don't want. Can't see why teachers wouldn't feel the same.

IWantADifferentName · 06/12/2019 10:20

Print sticks = Pritt sticks. Bloody autocorrect!

churchandstate · 06/12/2019 10:23

I don’t know why people keep suggesting glue sticks. If I opened a present - yes, a present - and it was something useless to me personally that my employer should be providing to my service users, I’d be Hmm

We don’t buy nurses codeine. We don’t buy firefighters water.

Get the wine!

Pinkblueberry · 06/12/2019 10:24

I’m a teacher. I’m going against the grain here it seems, I’d be very happy with wine. When it’s comes to glue sticks etc - also appreciated but I’m always a bit baffled by the amount of teachers on here who would like them as a gift for themselves Confused I would appreciate it for my class but I wouldn’t want them addressed to me as clearly they’re not for me (I take it you wouldn’t expect me to take them home to use for my own arts and crafts hobby) they’re for your own child’s benifit. It’s a donation/gift to the school and should be labelled as such. By all means do that instead of a teacher gift.

blackteasplease · 06/12/2019 10:26

We don’t buy firefighters water. this made me laugh!

Good point though.

At our school we tend to do a class gift of a voucher. Vouchers are good I think.

tryingnottopanicrightnow · 06/12/2019 10:26

Love wine. Don't want glue.

Fuiseog · 06/12/2019 10:31

I'm a teacher. Would be very touched to receive a bottle of wine, even if the parent doesn't know my preferences or whether I drink or whatever. It acknowledges that we are human too, have lives outside the school building and deserve and maybe even need to relax! It doesn't matter that it's a "generic" gift - I still find it thoughtful. Have I ended up with little collections as described above, of wines I don't drink? Sure! Usually because white wine seems the go-to gift and I drink red. But I am no less grateful, and I can regift or keep and use for entertaining or for making risotto or barley stew 😉 I do agree that no gift is necessary at all, but it's a nice thing to receive 😊

TheReluctantCountess · 06/12/2019 10:32

I’m a teacher. Personally, I wouldn’t want anything that should be provided, like glue sticks. Wine would be lovely.

ohprettybaby · 06/12/2019 10:33

Why would you buy wine for someone when you don't know if they drink it? You don't know if they are teetotal or a recovering alcoholic.

Teachers don't want to be overrun with 30 bottles of wine or 30 boxes of chocolate, naff ornaments or Best Teacher' mugs. Just send a Christmas card with a nice message of appreciation.

churchandstate · 06/12/2019 10:35

Personally I’m not that bothered about receiving a present, but all actual presents would be very much appreciated. If it was wine and I didn’t drink I would regift it. If chocolate and I didn’t eat chocolate, the same. If glue sticks I would suggest to the child that their parent has sent in some nice resources for the class and to thank them on behalf of the whole class.

DameXanaduBramble · 06/12/2019 10:35

Or just don’t buy a present? Yeah, its nice etc etc but not necessary at all.

Lipperfromchipper · 06/12/2019 10:35

Teacher here-
Chocs are always a winner
Wine not so much- there’s always the question of white or red (just so happens I don’t drink so neither would appeal to me)
Cups- no as we all have a ton of them

I agree with pp suggestion of stationery for the U.K. teachers (I’m in Ireland so again that wouldn’t apply to our classroom as parents buy the glue sticks anyway 😬)

LaurieMarlow · 06/12/2019 10:37

Any teacher I know would be delighted to receive wine.

‘Get them gluesticks’ is the kind of thing I only ever see on here. No one I know in real life would dream of it.

Tunnocks34 · 06/12/2019 10:37

Well if someone bought me wine I’d love it. Same with chocolate, or a mug, or just a card. Even a simple verbal thanks.

Only thing I don’t like are home made cakes etc. I don’t know why but I feel weird eating them. My issue that though!

churchandstate · 06/12/2019 10:38

If you’re buying for a surgeon, give them a pint of O-neg.

fruitpastille · 06/12/2019 10:38

Prefer wine to chocolate. Lately it's always prosecco which I don't like though. Preferred gift is a voucher for a coffee shop or nice stationery. It's expensive though especially for multiple teachers. That's why I normally do a chocolate orange and a nice message for my own kids teachers! Only about half the class give gifts generally so don't feel you have to. Cards are lovely but I must admit i don't keep them forever.

Vulpine · 06/12/2019 10:40

Gluhwein?

turfsausage · 06/12/2019 10:41

Ok... when the first glue stick comment came in I was going to ask 'this is a joke right?', thought I'd wait and see what others said. I meant a gift for the teacher not the classroom! No way will i get a bloody glue stick. Thanks for the replies, I'll go with wine or chocs which they can regift if they want to, might get kids to subtly enquire. They do a good job and i want them to know i appreciate them trying to teach my children their times tables etc!

Wine/chocolate can be hit or miss if you don't know the person well. I don't drink and I am gluten and lactose intolerant so I would be wary of giving consumables just incase. What about a nice scarf?
