Friend lying about phone banking being down

Dontlikeoranges · 06/12/2019 08:38

On Sunday the 1st of December I was out with a friend and she couldn't pay for any food or drinks as the nationwide phone banking app on her phone was not working she said the app said the service was down

Not to worry I thought these things happen she never takes her bank card always just her phone - not something I'd be happy to do but there you go.

Anyway I paid for everything food and drinks, it wasn't lots of money we weren't anywhere very expensive at all and it's not a problem paying for her. However I was speaking to a friend yesterday about switching banks and this came up and she said she had no problems at all with the app on Sunday.

Anyone else confirm if they had problems on Sunday? my friend has a little bit of form for lying I'm starting to be doubtful now!

Just because the app is down it shouldn't of made a difference to Apple Pay

It wasn't the app that was down, NatWest couldn't process payments on Friday, it didn't work for any form of payment (card, Apple Pay, telephone banking).

But it's now a week later, so if she still hasn't paid you back, you've got your answer...

QueenofallIsee · 06/12/2019 10:03

My nationwide app wasn’t working (no bank transfers in or out for a few hours) on Saturday but my card was working fine.

Dontlikeoranges · 06/12/2019 10:03

The bank is Nationwide but she uses Google pay but she said it was a Nationwide problem not Google pay.

It does sound like I'm not going to know for sure. It's not the money I mind it's if I was lied to, I'd rather she just said she was short. She is tight though and will lie about silly things - usually not things that affect me though

Sometimes it just plays up. 💁🏻‍♀️

Do and I are both in the same bank, sometimes my app plays up but his will be fine .......a glitch doesn't always affect everyone. It's a bit off calling her a liar tbh.

theendoftheendoftheend · 06/12/2019 10:06

If she's paid you back I wouldn't dwell on it

NearlyGranny · 06/12/2019 10:12

If it was a Nationwide problem, the problem might have been that she'd reached the end of her overdraft...

Any which way, she should have put it right by now and not leave it so you have to chase her for it. That's bad manners.

Horehound · 06/12/2019 10:23

Has she paid you back though?!

SquirellTamer · 06/12/2019 10:29

I'm with Nationwide and I find the app awful at times. It's very glitchy. However, after nearly a week I would have expected my friend to have paid me back.

hiredandsqueak · 06/12/2019 10:37

Pretty sure Nationwide app was down for maintenance Sunday (overnight from Saturday until Sunday morning anyway) as it seems to be quite regularly. Not sure whether payments were affected though.

Dontlikeoranges · 06/12/2019 10:39

No she hasn't paid me back but to be honest there was no mention of paying me back at the time. She just said it wasn't working and each time it was her round checked her phone again and said 'still not working' so I just paid for everything.

OP posts:
AreWeAnywhereNear · 06/12/2019 10:42

I'd be asking her to transfer the money, I'm sure she'll use the 'it's not working' excuse again.

If she does you know she's a CF.

Hwory · 06/12/2019 10:47

Ask for the money surely??????

OneForMeToo · 06/12/2019 10:50

My NatWest was down Friday and Dhs nationwide played up over the weekend but all sorted now. She should of paid you back.

MrsAJ27 · 06/12/2019 10:51

Google Pay sometimes doesn't work

Chunkers · 06/12/2019 10:51

Yes, ask if her app is working today as she owes you...

Kimbaland · 06/12/2019 11:00

Ugh I have a friend that never brings any money with her when we go to eat (pre arranged lunches so WTF) and then when payment comes she says 'I'll transfer you the money'

She never ever does, i'm sure her bank account is one way.

I think its massive CF to expect someone else to pay your share and you'll them pay them back.

The answer? We dont go for lunch anymore

andpancakesforbreakfast · 06/12/2019 11:08

It doesn't really matter if it was down on Sunday or not.

It's Friday, she should have paid you back by now!

irishglaze · 06/12/2019 11:10

I’m with Nationwide and they regularly close down the internet banking functions to do ‘maintenance’ on Sunday’s from midnight Saturday. They do it loads on other days too it’s often caused issues for me and left me without money. I must switch soon!

dontalltalkatonce · 06/12/2019 11:10

FFS, she's a tight, lying CFer. She has form for being tight and lying. Why the fuck are you not telling her that she owes you what her lunch and drinks cost? She's not a friend, she's a user. Don't ask her if the app is working, who cares? 'CF, you owe me £X for your lunch and drinks. I need this money back. Here are my details. I'll let you know when it's in my account.'

The end. Get a backbone. She's a pisstaking mooch.

Drum2018 · 06/12/2019 11:11

I'd send her a text asking if her online banking is up and running again and ask her to transfer what she owes you. Lying or not, she still owes you for the meal and should have paid you as soon as possible. If you let it go this time she could tell you the same thing next time.

AngusThermopyle · 06/12/2019 11:18

There was definitely some maintenance going on overnight at some point last weekend and i think again this weekend, I had a notification screen come up last Friday but generally i just ignore them so didn't note specifics.

Grandmi · 06/12/2019 11:35

I was away for a few days with friend last week and my phone banking didn’t work . Friend paid for everything and I transferred money to her as soon as I could. It wasn’t a national problem and I would have been massively offended if my friend suspected I was pulling a fast one!!! If she is a close friend why would you be so suspicious ?

hazell42 · 06/12/2019 11:41

I might have lied if I found myself short unexpectedly
Was she expecting to have to buy food and drink it was it one of those impulse decisions by someone else.
I probably would not tell anyone I was short of cash, because it can sound like a cadge
Did you lend the money or offer to pay. Ifor her. In other words, is she aware she owes you money?
Are we talking a 5 course dinner or coffee and cake in Costa
Either way, I think you checking up on your friend is a bit creepy. If you didnt want to pay for her when you realised she couldn't, you could have just cancelled or changed your plans

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 06/12/2019 11:46

There were loads of stories on Twitter over the weekend (actual news stories, not people moaning) about online banking being in chaos over the Black Friday weekend.

OldEvilOwl · 06/12/2019 11:51

Ask her to pay you back!?
