Why are babybels wasting plastic?

It just seems so stupid. There’s so much in the news about trying to reduce plastic tat, and yet I can’t buy a bag of 6 babybels without a little plastic tray in them.

Good point. They’re wrapped in wax, they don’t need plastic!

raspberryk · 05/12/2019 14:57

Id be more worried about the amount of plastic ingested when eating the actual babybel Grin

Twooter · 05/12/2019 14:59

I know, the plastic wrappers are bad enough, but the Mini Melters are ridiculous.

I was just thinking this! We've had like four now and aren't going to use any of them.

AllergicToAMop · 05/12/2019 15:02

Because the majority of general public would think that it's unhygienic to not have it wrapped even though it's in a wax.

plumpkinz · 05/12/2019 15:03

Write to them and ask them. Seriously.
Supermarkets have done very little to reduce plastic packaging, hoping that we've all forgotten about it as it's not on the tv every 5 seconds at the moment.

Merename · 05/12/2019 15:04

I was thinking this very thing. And composed a complaint email in my head that I haven’t sent. Also that the melters are pointless as most children who eat babybel are small I imagine and don’t need hot melty cheese.

nocluewhattodoo · 05/12/2019 15:05

The mini melters are shite, babybels solidify pretty quickly so useless as a dip. But we eat a lot of babybels in this house so I've ended up with millions of the little trays. DD has them in her play kitchen so they will be used for something at least

BirthdayCakes · 05/12/2019 15:21

I was just going to write what raspberryk did!

lotsofoysters · 05/12/2019 15:24

YABU, you should be more annoyed about them being individually wrapped in wax. It's not beeswax. It's petrochemical based wax so basically plastic.

Yoohoo16 · 05/12/2019 15:28

I thought exactly the same thing! More bloody plastic. Yanbu!

DontCallMeShitley · 05/12/2019 15:35

I was thinking last night when trying to buy Dylon, their dye used to be in a sealed bag in a box, with a paper leaflet inside. Now they use 'pods' covered in plastic film.

Am trying not to need to buy dye, and make the colour I want from my old ones (in boxes).

DontCallMeShitley · 05/12/2019 15:52

And Higgidy pies. Wrapped multiple times, plastic and cardboard.

DryHeaving · 05/12/2019 15:57

I agree and encouraging you to 'collect' them all 🙄

InDubiousBattle · 05/12/2019 16:02

Erm. ...I'm missing something, what tray? Baby bels are wrapped in wax, then plastic then sold in a plastic net type bag aren't they? I mean they're wasteful but ours don't come with a tray.

ItchySeveredFoot · 05/12/2019 16:06

They now come with a small plastic tray to melt them in the microwave. Completely pointless. Luckily our local shop sells bags with the tray and without. It's one thing to keep putting your product in the same package as always but to actually add more plastic is bonkers!

Celebelly · 05/12/2019 16:14

The atrocity in question

Why are babybels wasting plastic?
userxx · 05/12/2019 16:33

I commented on that silly little pastic thing the other day........ as i was reaching for my 5th babybel.

Weirdwonders · 05/12/2019 17:03

I think it’s because wrapping things in plastic numerous times creates the perception of it being a higher value / treat item (that they can charge more for) when at the end of the day it’s just a few little blobs of cheese innit.

rosiejaune · 05/12/2019 17:26

YABU to be concerned about a bit of plastic in comparison to the environmental impact of the cheese.

ItchySeveredFoot · 05/12/2019 17:52

Yeah op you can't be concerned about one thing unless you're concerned about anything! Hmm

ItchySeveredFoot · 05/12/2019 17:53

Everything *

diddl · 05/12/2019 18:09

Ours come in a net that goes in the recyclables.

5zeds · 05/12/2019 18:12

Here’s an idea. Buy a block of cheese. Cut it up. Eat it. No need to engage with the little red plastic monsters at all.

diddl · 05/12/2019 18:15

Sorry, misunderstoodBlush

Thought that they now came in a pot instead of the net!
