AIBU flat tyre

AbbieAndow · 05/12/2019 09:16

2 days ago I got a screw in my tyre. My dad brought it to be fixed as I needed to work. The garage was busy so he left it there and collected it yesterday. When he gave it to my husband he noticed it was flat but put it my car and pumped it up but 2 hours later it had gone down. My husband pumped it up this morning so I could bring it back to the garage but no apology. They told me I’d need a new tyre - fine not a problem. They are charging me £75 for a ‘mid range’ tyre apparently with a small discount. No mention of a refund for fixing it previously. A bit made as I am now missing work for something hi no that should have been sorted! AIBU to challenge the garage?

I think if you wanted to challenge the garage you should have done it at the time. They offered you a discount on a new tyre which you accepted - this was the time to complain and/or negotiate a better deal.

AbbieAndow · 05/12/2019 09:26

I haven’t accepted. I’m in the garage now

I just wondered if this is common practice before I make a ‘fuss’

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/12/2019 09:29

Huh? They fixed a hole but the tyre was knackered anyway and failed some time after your car was brought home. They offered you a discount, to make up for the failed repair and STILL you are angry!

What do you want them to do? Give you the tyre for free? They didn't break it...

SweetAsSpice · 05/12/2019 09:29

I would ask them to take into consideration the fact that the screw in the tyre was replaced by them initially, but then it was still flat after. They should have tested that in the garage. Makes you wonder if they did this to charge you twice if that makes sense. Good luck raising that with them though, they will likely deny till they die.

WorraLiberty · 05/12/2019 09:32

OMG you're in the garage now, asking Mumsnet what to do? That's hilarious Grin Grin

Just ask them about it and tell them you're unhappy.

No 'challenging' to be done, just basic communication.

PlanDeRaccordement · 05/12/2019 09:33

Depends what your dad said to them in the beginning. For example, if they recommended it be replaced from the start but your dad said no, just patch it. Then it’s not their fault your dad chose a repair that might not work over their recommendation to replace the tyre.

If your dad said replace the tyre and they convinced him it could be repaired for cheaper, and he reluctantly agreed. Then they are at fault.

Need the whole story to know who is BU

TakeMeToKernow · 05/12/2019 09:35

How much did they charge to “fix” it? I’d expect a refund.

AbbieAndow · 05/12/2019 09:35

Calm down curious, I didn’t say angry I said a bit mad, more for the inconvenience. I just don’t understand why they would fix something unfixable. I would have been more than happy to pay for a new tyre. And the discount they offered was not a discount. I looked their prices up online and the price is the same.

I wouldn't bother kicking up a fuss. Just use a different garage in future as if they can't change a tyre that needs changing you probably shouldn't trust them with your brakes.

AbbieAndow · 05/12/2019 09:37

They changed £20, apparently fixed it. This morning they told me I’d ‘picked up’ another puncture even though I hadn’t driven on it when it went down again.

OP posts:
AbbieAndow · 05/12/2019 09:38

Giveherhell- thank you that is exactly what I was thinking. I’ll stick to my usual garage in future.

Plande - my dad is a big softie, if someone recommends something he goes with it.

ItWentInMyEye · 05/12/2019 09:40

My DP buys part worn tyres, which are usually almost brand new. Fraction of the cost and usually good brands.

AbbieAndow · 05/12/2019 09:42

The whole story (from my dad) is he took it to the garage, told them it had gone flat and we noticed a screw in it and told them if they could fix it great- if not new tyre please. He collected it the next day as they told him they were very busy.
My dad noticed it wasnt fully inflated on collection and when he mentioned it he was told that they don’t always fully inflate until it goes on the car and as my car was not there my dad accepted this. My husband put the tyre on, fully inflated it then noticed a bit later it was flat again.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/12/2019 09:42

Calm down??? Smile

even though I hadn’t driven on it when it went down again. the car had come back from the garage... unlikely but it could have happened, especially if the original nail was close to your house!

AbbieAndow · 05/12/2019 09:44

Worra- I know I’m being silly!! But in my defence I thought (naively) it would be a simple case of me bringing it back, explaining the situation and I’d get a phone sorry, you need a new tyre. There you go minus the money paid to repair it’. My dad and hubby aren’t answering and I’m always getting loaned at by friends for being a pushover. 🙈

AbbieAndow · 05/12/2019 09:46

Curious- My dad took the tyre in his car In his boot and brought it back in his car in his boot. I did not drive on that tyre at all.

OP posts:
Hadalifeonce · 05/12/2019 09:46

Just ask for a proper discount as you have checked their prices on line

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/12/2019 09:46

My dad noticed it wasnt fully inflated on collection and when he mentioned it he was told that they don’t always fully inflate until it goes on the car and as my car was not there my dad accepted this. THAT makes a HUGE difference.

The TYRE was taken to the garage, NOT the CAR!

Your dad should have laughed at them and told them to pump the bloody thing up properly! If he could SEE it was flat then it must have been very flat!

Avoid trhem like the plague!

AbbieAndow · 05/12/2019 09:48

Itwentinmyeye- thanks for that tip. I might try that. Do you get them from a normal tyre garage.

OP posts:
Insideimsprinting · 05/12/2019 09:48

They charged you £20 to fix a nail in a tyre, we charge £8 but only if we fix it. If its to bad a puncture to fix they should have noticed this and rang you re prices for a new tyre. I have never had a puncture repair leave the garage flat or to go flat later. How very bizarre.
Could it be possible that due to them being busy some plonker let the tyre out presuming it has been fixed and charged you when in fact it hadnt been?

I have customers come in and if Im not sure the jobs completed I dont release the car/tyre until Im sure mainly for safety reasons, but some people wouldnt dream of just double checking to see if the jobs all done.

AbbieAndow · 05/12/2019 09:51

Curious- lesson learned. I will never use them again. I have just sucked it up for now and chalked it down to experience. I was going to challenge but being on my own and having 2 rather large men telling me that the charge was to fix the hole made by the screw whether the tyre was any good or not made me rethink. My dads has now got back to me and cross but it’s done now!

OP posts:
Insideimsprinting · 05/12/2019 09:53

Whilst in your case you didnt drive on the tyre after picking it up, in the garages defence, this has and does happen. But I think they've cocked up here just try somewhere else, it doesnt have to be a tyre garage we do everything and havent had issues like this.

AbbieAndow · 05/12/2019 09:55

Insideimsprinting- that is exactly what I thought has happened, but my husband tells me that where the screw was he can see it has been repaired so there must have been another area damaged that they didn’t spot. I normally use a garage that I think would have spotted this. My dad was doing me a massive favour so I didn’t like to specify a garage to him but he’s not used this one before. Never mind!
