Empty Advent Calendar!

Fr0g · 05/12/2019 08:48

Just before last Christmas, I bought a reduced advent calendar and shoved it in a cupboard for this year.
Opened the first three windows, and all were empty - I assumed gifts or whatever had all fallen to the bottom. On giving it a good shake, I realised no noise, or weight at the bottom. Opened it and realised that it's completely empty - obviously designed that you fill it yourself.

I'm not that annoyed - I only paid £1 for it, and I'm going to fill it with cat treats (she won't know she's missed a few days) - but if I'd purchased it for someone else would have been embarassing.

Well if it had contained treats and they had been stored for a year they probably would have been inedible anyway.

LittleRen · 05/12/2019 09:26

I am more Shock at the fact you’d store an advent calendar for a year... the chocolate certainly won’t be at its best Confused

Damntheman · 05/12/2019 09:32

It might not have been a chocolate calendar folks. A lot of calendars these days have toys in them and those would be perfectly fine to store for a year.

ATowelAndAPotato · 05/12/2019 09:33

So what did you think was in it? Most of them have some hint as to the contents (chocolate, beauty, toys, etc)

abouttime2 · 05/12/2019 09:37

Cat treats ?

WaterSheep · 05/12/2019 09:40

Could you post a picture of the advent calendar?

I'm guessing it was something like this
www.theworks.co.uk/p/craft-hobbies/fill-your-own-advent-calendar---classic-christmas/5052089272835

I would have wondered where the product information was, as food advent calendars have ingredient information, and gift ones have age warnings.

TotalRecall · 05/12/2019 09:45

Was it Cadbury? It was all over the news about them all being empty.

purpleme12 · 05/12/2019 09:51

The post is confusing it says you came to the conclusion that you were supposed to fill it yourself but surely you'd know either way from the packaging?

MarianaMoatedGrange · 05/12/2019 09:52

I'm going to fill it with cat treats (she won't know she's missed a few days)

I dunno, cats are quite intelligent - especially when treats are in the offing.

SeeWhoRustsFirst · 05/12/2019 10:07

OK - I'll be the first to say it OP .... you got an advent calendar for your CAT? Did I read that right? The mind boggles! Grin

Fr0g · 05/12/2019 10:16

It was from the Tiger chain (useful to know that about a week before a seasonal date, they reduce all related stock to £1 - but that might just be the Islington branch)
I thought it was going to be little toys that I could use as tree decs or play with the cat with.
You can get cat advent calendars, but unless they're really expensive generally filled with catnip flavoure stuff in a sort of chocolate/fondant consistency. My cat oblingingly takes them for the first few days, but then starts dumping chewed/sucked treats under the furniture or in my bed.

Well that was a twist in the tale.

Fr0g · 05/12/2019 10:20

Yes, it is like "The Works" one - and that was £4 - so £1 a bargain Xmas Smile

I'd forgotten about it, so have an M&S Beauty Calendar as well.

A good friend of mine sent my cat an advent calendar, and for once the treats have been deemed suitable by my fussy feline.

I also have one, but a much smaller chocolate one. Obviously I'm not as important as HRH.

that story is hilarious - complete with sad face family

draughtycatflap · 05/12/2019 11:11

I love my cat treat advent calendar. Distracts me from the chilly nips round my bits. Though I struggle to open the doors with my ginger paws.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 05/12/2019 11:13

At least it's not a dog advent calendar? The dog would eat the cardboard bits or shred it for fun rather than just disdainfully ignoring it like the cat most likely will.

CustardySergeant · 05/12/2019 11:16

"she won't know she's missed a few days"

What the hell? She's a CAT. Have you lost your marbles, fallen off your trolley and gone round the bend? I can hardly believe this thread.

KurriKurri · 05/12/2019 11:16

I'm envisaging a little cat waiting eagerly while you open the door on her advent calendar, then walking away sadly when the door is empty. (I have a tendency for mawkish drama Grin)

I bought my DD (age 30 but I still get her an advent calendar) a great dairy free one from Holland an Barrett - it is cube shaped and has great big disc of different flavoured chocolate in it.

I didn't get one for my dog (age 2) because he turns his nose up at most treats and just leaves them on the floor to get trodden into the carpet. Also he's a dog and has no concept of Advent

fromdownwest · 05/12/2019 11:20

Practice that sad face and get right on the phone to the Daily Mail, maybe use the words outraged, its disgusting, Christmas is ruined etc.

draughtycatflap · 05/12/2019 11:24

They should do one you can give to frenemies and fill it with chocolax for obnoxious Julie at work who stole your promotion.
