Mouse or rat? Found it in the garden, about the size of a hamster

Rats have bald pink tails.

troppibambini · 06/12/2019 17:57

We have rats in our loft at the moment I caught a young rat which I thought was a mouse.
It has a furry tail and has been confirmed as a rat by pest controller.
If you have them you will know about it the scratching and gnawing is so loud.

One pest controller also said it was a rat. 😂

MollyMinniesMum · 06/12/2019 18:00

Field mouse

Vynalbob · 06/12/2019 18:00

Degu vs young rat
Not much between them I think
See old news clip about pet degu s released

Mouse. You can tell by the tail.

FelicisNox · 06/12/2019 18:06

Looks like a shrew or young rat to me... hard to tell at that angle.

SaskiaRembrandt · 06/12/2019 18:10

You're all wrong, it's clearly Big Foot. Doh!

SaskiaRembrandt · 06/12/2019 18:12

It's not a rat - I've seen lots of rats, I grew up on a farm and my sons kept fancy rats (cause they're much better pets than hamsters). The ears and tail on that poor little thing are not ratty.

Red tint to fur does bring to mind Yellow-necked mouse rather than Woodmouse, and the YN ones are a shade larger too. I do sometimes find outside-living House Mice dead on the patio (cat) - there is a small colony that lives outside that the cat predates on when he's run out of available voles. And they can be tricky to distinguish compared with Woodmouse or Yellow-necked, unless you have a handy range of examples in front of you.

What it most definitely IS NOT, is: a rat, a vole, a shrew, a squirrel, a mole (?? FFS) an escaped chinchilla, or a Degu. I'm appalled at the lack of natural history knowledge displayed here! Grin

LittleMissMe99 · 06/12/2019 18:16

It's a young rat I'd say

NettleTea · 06/12/2019 18:17

looks like a wood mouse to me. rats dont tend to have the white belly - thats the wood mouse colouring.
or an escapee pet

Helen1224 · 06/12/2019 18:17

Must confess, not read whole thread, but looking at picture my first thought was grey squirrel

JumpiestBat · 06/12/2019 18:18

Wild mice are tiny, smaller than an egg. That looks ratty to me or squirrelly. Not a mouse though.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 06/12/2019 18:19

Oh, you're right, one pest controller did say it was a rat. Well, I suppose we all have a right to an opinion. But their opinion was wrong

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 06/12/2019 18:20

It is quite funny though.

CoatyMcHangerson · 06/12/2019 18:22

Sorry, thread has Moved On somewhat. Grin Clearly a rodent-fluid RAT that identifies as a Yellow-Necked Degu-Mole but only on fridays. Do NOT mis-species it - that is literal violence.

Lovemusic33 · 06/12/2019 18:22

I think it’s a wood mouse, it has larger ears, pale tummy and long tail. Not a shrew (they are tiny with short tails).

SevenStones · 06/12/2019 18:23

Sail away sail away sail away.....

Is it a very small giraffe?

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 06/12/2019 18:23

The slender furry tail! Will no-one look at the tail?!

(Un)interesting fact: it's more clearly a mouse if you look at this thread on your phone and turn your phone sideways.

howard97A · 06/12/2019 18:26

Just ask it how it identifies.

Don't make assumptions.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 06/12/2019 18:29

Just ask it how it identifies.

It identifies as dead. Let's break out the ouiji board!

Somanysocks · 06/12/2019 18:29

I thought i saw the words baby kangaroos upthread. Maybe......

NettleTea · 06/12/2019 18:30

Degu does have a fluffy bit on the end of their tail, but the rest of the tail is hairless and a bit scaley like a rats tail. We used to have degus for 12 years, and some baby ones too. its not a degu.

As people have said its a mouse. Possibly a woodmouse /yellow necked mouse. Theres been a cold snap. They might snook in for a look for food. Not any more though. poor mousies.
