To ask what you are getting your teen maths/computer science nerd for Christmas?

Hi,

I'm at a loss. I've asked him for ideas but he's not been forthcoming.

I've ordered a couple of books I think he will like but other than that I've drawn a blank.

He's already got the main gadgets (laptop/phone/watch/tablet) over previous birthdays/Christmas and none are in need of an upgrade/replacement (by way of example his phone/iPad mini are quite old but he's perfectly happy with them and doesn't want a new one).

He's not into music and clothes are "boring".

So has anyone come up with something cool for the 16/17 year old self proclaimed and proud of it nerd in their life?

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

3D printer!! I’m basically recommending it on every post like this lol!

We just printed this on ours (ender 3 roughly £160 for the pro)

Wireless phone charging pad, portable power bank and money!

Curious2468 · 04/12/2019 17:40

If he is a nerd he might like dungeons and dragons and there are so many minis etc you can make with the printer also dice towers etc

My favourite geeky gift websites are:

www.mathsgear.co.uk
www.resourceaholic.com/p/mathy-gifts.html

DeRigueurMortis · 04/12/2019 17:47

Thanks for the ideas so far.

We've already got a 3D printer (it's a family one rather than his, but he's free to use it and does so).

His phone isn't new enough for wireless charging and as I said he's not bothered about upgrading.

I'm really struggling as you can tell!

I'll look at that website Canoo thank you!

Can someone tell me more about 3D printers - I thought they cost 1000s so said no to getting one for DC2. I take it they are less - can anyone link to a decent-not-too-pricey one? Do the cartridges then cost £££?

TooTrueToBeGood · 04/12/2019 17:52

Has he got a Raspberry Pi? They're awesome development platforms for the inquisitive geek and the new Pi 4 is a massive improvement on its predecessors.

Ironoaks · 04/12/2019 17:54

Tickets to see Festival of the Spoken Nerd.

DeRigueurMortis · 04/12/2019 17:54

Too a Raspberry Pi was part of last years present! It's great!

Iron thé festival tickets sound promising!

Is he into astronomy? What about a decent telescope?

DeRigueurMortis · 04/12/2019 17:59

Good this is embarrassing but he has a massive telescope in his bedroom Blush bought some years ago as a birthday present.

Sorry some great ideas but part of the dilemma is that we seem to have used them up on previous presents!

festivalofthespokennerd.com/

We've seen them on a previous tour and have booked tickets for Unnecessary Detail

Areyoufree · 04/12/2019 18:01

Please adopt me.

Watsername · 04/12/2019 18:02

I got my DS (15) something like this last year:
arduino set

The set was amazing! He's done so much with it.

Panicmode1 · 04/12/2019 18:03

Thank you so much for those websites @Canoo. I was struggling with a present for my maths obsessed teenage godson!

Monkeynuts18 · 04/12/2019 18:06

Completely off topic and not helpful but just wanted to say I think it’s awesome that your son is proud of being a nerd. I was such a nerd at his age but desperately tried to be cool and it made me really unhappy - it’s great that kids seem to be more comfortable with who they are nowadays.

Sorry, as you were. Smile

Medianoche · 04/12/2019 18:13

Have a look at Turing Tumble if you want something a bit different. Programming geek friends love theirs. We’ve not used ours yet as it’s a Christmas present but the quality looks really good.

DeRigueurMortis · 04/12/2019 18:24

I've bought the Spoken Nerd Videos and of he likes them I'll look at tickets to see them live. It does sound up his street!

Monkey thanks! He's very comfortable in his own skin these days (less so when he was younger) and I agree it's great to see him and his friends embrace the inner geek!

Medi thanks for that suggestion, I'll take a look.

Wats that definitely up his street as he's already built his own computer, I'll probably ask him about that as he knows what he likes when it comes to electronics/computers.

Are happy to if you don't mind sharing a very messy bedroom filled with books, electronics and Lego models ;-)

Thanks again everyone whose offered up a suggestion!

Canoo Thank you for the links, just found presents for DB & DSIL.

silverlace · 04/12/2019 18:39

Sounds like my son. He had a joint birthday/Christmas present of a VR headset and said it is the best present ever.

DeRigueurMortis · 04/12/2019 18:44

Oh VR headset might be a goer!!!

Thank you!

Mine is a bit of a polymath nerd (as are DH and I), and last year he was totally delighted with a 'Teach yourself Viking' book - which resulted in him writing in runes for some time. I got him a D&D themed pencil case from RedBubble which he loves, and proudly wears a 'Never trust an Atom, they make up everything' t shirt.
He has a graphics tablet which he enjoys drawing on as it is directly in his PC.
If you will be anywhere near mid Wales/ Herefordshire border, I would recommend doing a voucher for the SpaceGuard centre in Knighton. It isn't a big shiny place, but the enthusiasm for sky watching is wonderful.
Dark sky night in Kielder national park?

DeRigueurMortis · 04/12/2019 19:03

Thanks for that recommendation - we were actually thinking of a short break in Wales as I've not been since the last of my relatives there died 5 years ago, so I'll definitely keep SpaceGuard in mind!
