To get my puppy a dog pram?

TreeMenDos · 04/12/2019 13:53

8 weeks.

I want to take her out to socialise but I can't carry her around whilst I walk my older dog.

Even when she's completed her vaccination course she won't be able to walk like the older one so I thought I could just push her for the remainder.

I'm not usually a person who gives a shit about what people think but I can help but think I'll look like a nob 😂
Would I look crazy

Xmas Grin pics please

Of course you should do it and people must be quite dim not to see why this is a good idea. You need to be careful with puppies until they finish their vaccinations and a dog pram is ideal, they stay safe and they socialize. Also puppies must not be overexercised and the pram allows the puppy to rest.

People use dog prays and dog slings for a variety of reasons. My 11yo was on crate rest for six weeks to recover from crucial ligament injury. I popped him in a dog sling and he could still come on walks with the other two dogs. It gave his day variety and kept him happier about the confinement.

I’ve just bought one! I’m getting a second dog after Christmas. A giant breed so can’t walk very far to start with due to risk to growth plates. I don’t care if I look like a loon! I want the option to take pup out if we are doing a longer walk. (Also plan to exercise separately.) And it’ll help me hoist it to the vet for jabs!

KarmaStar · 04/12/2019 20:36

I had this issue op and I bought a dog bag that goes over the body so she was sitting against my chest.she loved it.

sonjadog · 04/12/2019 20:40

Sounds like a good idea to me. I put my dog in a rucksack when he was a puppy and got tired, and as you cannot carry a rucksack, this sounds like a great alternative.

MerryDeath · 04/12/2019 20:53

yes.. you would. what sort of dogs are we talking about here? we've got a very small one and a very big one and she can outrun and out walk him. she'd be bloody furious if we tried to insult her with a pram... ridiculous things unless your dog has a health condition.

Disfordarkchocolate · 04/12/2019 20:57

I'd just think the dog was too young or too old, especially when we got close and I could see the cute puppy.

Thelnebriati · 04/12/2019 21:00

MerryDeath OP has a puppy that hasn't finished its vaccinations yet and is unable to carry any weight.
So a pushchair is the perfect solution, she isn't using it for a healthy adult dog.

Excited101 · 04/12/2019 21:04

If it’s going to be temporary then look for a second hand one, would a baby pram do?

Littleunicorndreams · 04/12/2019 21:09

If yu don’t have a car then how would you get a poorly dog to the vet? I have a friend who has a pet pram to get her (very large) cat to the vet as she doesn’t drive.

So in that case it wouldn’t be unreasonable to get a pet pram as it would be for vet emergencies as well as the puppy months?

Icecreamsoda99 · 04/12/2019 21:25

I don't think you would look like a nob, at the worse a bit eccentric but so what, do what is best for you and the puppy!

TreeMenDos · 04/12/2019 22:47

Littleunicorns

I get taxis with my dog all the time. A local firm is fine with well behaved dogs, there is just a £3 surcharge

what sort of dog are talking about here?

Read the thread and you'll see what sort of dog.

It's an 8 week old puppy that hasn't finished it's vaccinations so cannot be allowed to walk on the ground, and the OP doesn't want to miss out on vital socialisation during this important phase in the puppy's life.

The OP is not talking about a puppy that's out on runs.

Nothankyoumiss · 05/12/2019 10:10

Do it, just know that sometimes people stare to get a good look off the pushchair. I saw a lady once with a great one, that took more shopping than my baby's pushchair. At that time I wasn't driving and was regretting not having had prioritised basket space.

yetwig · 05/12/2019 11:07

Just do it, who cares what anybody else thinks, your dog your rules 🙂 when my pup was 10 weeks old she was in a sling but was already nearly 10 kilos so quite heavy, it was only for a sort time anyway. Being out and about seeing and smelling different things, is far better for pups social wellbeing.

VetOnCall · 05/12/2019 11:43

Do it, it makes sense in your circumstances. Who cares what anyone thinks, although dog strollers are common enough now that I doubt anyone will bat an eyelid.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 05/12/2019 11:53

I recently bought one for my Staffie cross as she keeps going lame (sprains in various legs) - so far, she has usually recovered within a couple of days but I realised I needed one for if she didn't, in order to get her to the vets (I have no car). It arrived and looks disconcertingly like a very smart little pram. My sister tells me I have to don a Norland Nanny uniform before I can push the dog in it anywhere.

Rubyupbeat · 05/12/2019 12:00

Do it, puppies shouldn't walk for long anyway, bad for hips and legs.
A man I know had A dog wheelchair type thing for his dog (giant breed) when it got old and riddled with arthritis, but still wanted to go out. It was low to the floor and his dog would get on and off as he pleased.
Who cares when it's for your dogs health, when mine get doddery, I will do whatever suits them, as I cant see them not wanting to go out.

Silencedwitness · 05/12/2019 12:02

We had a dog bag 😂 to be honest do what works for you. I really wouldn’t care what people thought.

JeffreyJefferson · 05/12/2019 12:03

@heartsonacake Absolutely ridiculous. If you can not effectively read a post correctly on Mumsnet then you shouldn’t be on here. Very irresponsible.

SpamChaudFroid · 05/12/2019 12:12

A resounding YANBU from me OP.

(am now eyeing my frisky bodeguero terrier and thinking he needs a pram)

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 05/12/2019 12:30

Had to look on Amazon to see what this looked like. Absolutely go for it! Good to read about sensible, caring and responsible puppy/dog owners.
Seen a gentleman doing this with an ordinary stroller - with his elderly cat aboard. This was on a very popular dog walking area. Mesh cover on so cat couldn't jump off + the dogs couldn't see her Smile

QueenOfOversharing · 05/12/2019 12:50

I realise you have physical restrictions on carrying, but come on - a toy breed puppy? Does it even weigh as much as a cup of coffee? Prams for elderly dogs or ones with mobility issues are really useful, but it is a toy breed puppy. 😒

TreeMenDos · 05/12/2019 15:57

Queen I have cerebral palsy and suffer near constant spasms which are worst in my arms.

Would you like to come see how long I can hold my dog for whilst walking? 🙄

QueenOfOversharing · 05/12/2019 16:13

Then get a pram. Why does anyone's opinion on here matter if you need that much help? Hmm
